Winning Scottish Cup would devastate chasing pack

223

I know Neil Lennon will have only one thought on his mind this week: Thursday’s Europa League second leg against Copenhagen.  Pushing deeper into this tournament is where the money is for Celtic and delivers prestige on the international stage.  But, I could argue that Sunday’s Scottish Cup quarter final is more important.

With the rest of the league now realising Celtic are on their way to nine-in-a-row, the Scottish Cup has taken on enormous importance.  Reaching the quarter finals of the Europa League will put a few million in the bank and earn more coefficient points, but it changes little from a strategic point of view.  Conversely, winning the Scottish Cup for a record fourth successive season would devastate those hoping that the millions spent trying to catch Celtic was not a waste of money.

Trying to catch Celtic is the most expensive indulgence in football, a point we will explore in more detail tomorrow.

  3. Seen some reports that we could start without Brown, Christie and Ntcham on Thursday… I hope not

The alternative would be what? Bitton, McGregor & Rogic?

“CELTIC are sweating on Scott Brown’s fitness ahead of Thursday’s clash with Copenhagen. The Hoops skipper limped off in last week’s 1-1 first-leg draw with a calf strain and missed Sunday’s win over Kilmarnock.”

“Broony has been undergoing treatment but Neil Lennon fears he will be ruled out. Ryan Christie is suspended after his booking in Denmark and Olivier Ntcham is crocked.”

“Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic have been pencilled in for starting roles, with Ismaila Soro in contention for a place on the bench. Soro was watched by Lennon in Tuesday’s Reserve Cup tie against Hibs with Ewan Henderson also involved in that match.”

I have a feeling one of Brown and Ntcham will make it. Play through the pain barrier if needed.

  5. I decided some time ago that I wouldn’t be buying anymore Celtic PLC merchandise until Resolution 12 was resolved, I may never be buying again.

I got an email this morning from the marketing department trying to sell me some new sporting tops. Who at CFC thought it was a good idea to produce tops with Blue in them? Or is it just my browser?

    …..and McGregor is hardly an `alternative ` !!

    ____

McGregor, Rogic & Bitton is the alternative to McGregor, Brown & Ntcham

  7. Broonie struggled quite badly against Copenhagen. I’d quite happily see Sunday’s team play against Copenhagen tomorrow night. We attack much quicker with CalMac in that role, even the Kilmarnock commentators on ‘CTV’ pointed that out.

Broonie needs to be rested for a couple of games.

  8. If we have to play Rogic and Bitton I’d prefer to go with 4231

Rogic doesn’t cover the same ground that Christie does so I’d sacrifice Griffiths from the start

Rogic combines well with Forrest and Edouard so hope they can muster up some goals between them

  9. I hope we don’t throw in a 50% Broonie. Rest him up and play the Killie team with Moi replacing Christie.

The problem with a 4-2-3-1 is the ME has looked completely off the pace in all his appearances since returning from injury. So unless we plan on playing JF on the left and Frimpong on the right, I can’t see us taking that option.

Given our midfield options I would go for the 3-5-2. I don’t think the Copenhagen central defence look great and Griff and Eddy have been working well so far.

The main thing we have to remember is that we have the advantage going into tomorrow’s game. Let’s not do another Cluj.

Agreed – the system is working very well and a major contributing factor is having the two up top.

We are streets ahead of Copenhagen and if we are minus two midfielders we have players to step in, I wouldnt be disrupting the system too much or overthinking things.

Be brave, get at them, two up top with wing backs with more licence to push forward than last week.

They’d be delighted if we went with one up – lets make it an uncomfortable a night as possible for them. That means two up top, linking up as well as they have been and licence to get as many shots off as possible.

I desperately want Celtic to re-sign Jackson Irvine from Hull. Free agent in the summer.

I take your point. Its hard to say where Moi is in terms of fitness as he hasnt featured much.

He’s been back for over 3 weeks. He played 85 mins against Clyde but not much else.

But is it a case of the team doing well and he has to earn his place?

Injuries and create opportunities for those on the side lines.

I appreciate its a risk. I like Moi and would give him the chance.

I don’t think it is worth the risk. We have the advantage int he tie. We shouldn’t be starting a guy who is still getting up to speed having played 100 minutes in the last three months unless there is no other options. The 3-5-2 provides that other option, even if the midfield 3 is Bitton, CMcG and Rogic- hopefully Ntcham is fit enough to make the bench.

Plus, we looked more comfortable in a 3-5-2 in the 2nd half v Copenhagen, so would be happy with that option again.

    * Declan to confirm everythign is ok and that they are going to riggle out of this (then we know they’re fecked!)

    * Braga to start the sequence of events…
