With Brendan, there’s a belief

620

‘No one said it was easy.’ How true. When I heard the Celtic line-up I responded, “Would take a 1-0 right now”. No strikers and a new central defensive pairing is not the way to start an important game.

A couple of years ago, you would have an ominous feeling right now, but with Brendan, there’s a belief that we will be prepared in Trondheim. We need to put the ball in the net. Even if we concede first, subsequently putting the ball in the net resolves a lot of issues.

My expectation is that we saw the best of Rosenborg last night. Celtic were clearly well below their best. When the teams meet again Celtic will be one week fitter, and I expect personnel changes.

For so long we missed the kind of football that knots your stomach. This one is hugely important. Enjoy the tension!

Like that, “bear-faced sectarianism”. But, scodd free, surely?

    Well said.

The SPFL statement is easily destroyed.

Only if DD and co. have the haw maws to destroy it.

  3. I didn’t agree with the team either. Ntcham hasn’t played with his teammates enough, Rogic’s movement isn’t good enough as a striker and Forrest appears to bang out of form.

I cannot believe he didn’t have Aitchison on the bench and didn’t give McGregor any minutes.

He deserves the benefit of the doubt but I would expect changes for the away leg.

The “we didnae know defence” disnae wash.

    ———————————————————————-

Given that clubs actually employ people to understand the rules and submit player registrations and licence applications “we didnae know” is severe negligence, not a defence.

Say, that sounds a wee bit like Andrew Dickson’s job…

Wait, was he elected to the SFA Congress this week????

    My, my…

  5. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Not a disastrous result, but not great either. I definitely think we can score away, but we will need to be switched on defensively too.

Don’t think Rogic was ever going to work as the “striker”. Hopefully Griffiths will be back, otherwise we might need a formation re-think.

  6. Quonno

Summer football would help with qualification but a league that ends in October or November doesn’t help with the group stages. We’d be playing group games in the off season and then knock out stages months after the season has ended

  7. On hols in the sunny and beautiful kingdom of Fife, so missed last night.

Given the personnel in the team, the result was not entirely unexpected.

Last season after a hiccup in Gibraltar, Brendan could do no wrong, yet now people are doubting him!

These games will the most difficult of our season given the state of our match fitness, the high stakes for all clubs involved and the quality of opponents.

Any team without its two main strikers would be at a disadvantage and of course we are not guaranteed to get through next week. Missing out on CL football would be a big blow but if it happens we just have to get on with things.

Personally I think we will get through this round but making a step up in the next would require a genuine goal threat in the team. Better opposition than Rosenborg will punish us.

However events on the park are over shadowed by those off it.

We need a speedy resolution of the GB issue, they either agree to abide by stadium rules or don’t. If they don’t then close them down now and don’t let this drag on and on!

Even more important is the club’s response to the ridiculous and insulting decision of the SPFL not to defend the game against blatant cheating!

Make no mistake if the club get this one wrong they will lose a great deal more than one season’s participation in the CL.

The future of the entire game in a Scotland is at stake here. For year we thought we were being cheated, now we have incontrovertible evidence of it. Either the game cleans this up or it slowly dies as people will not want to be associated with such a sham. The fans demand that the footballing authorities stand up for the game must be successful, though I think that the title of “Strip the titles” was misjudged. A better one would have been something along the lines of “Play Fair” or “Save the Game”. If we do either of those things then the titles issue would be sorted but more importantly the game might have a chance to move on and flourish!

  9. Someone posted this morning that the game in Scotia is irrelevant to anyone outside its borders. Went to the barbers this morning and while waiting had a look at the sports sections of the english editions of the sun and star (i know) – not 1 line, beyond the score, on our game last night.

  10. CELTIC40ME

The acceptance of the Linfield change date nullified the French friendly and reduced our preparation by one game.We should have demanded uefa stuck to the rules. Also they know the schedule so lack of games was choice.

    QUONNO

Told by who?Maybe thats just another excuse as often our targets are never signed due to deadlines expiring?

  11. Poor show last night. The difference clearly was the fitness leveles along with the absence of a striker.

Isit only me, but i’m getting fed up waiting for Armstrong, will he, won’t he. If the guy does not want to plat for Celtic, then thanks for the memories. We cannot be held to ransom, ebd of.

Also a bit concerned with the overall fitness Of Moussa and Leigh, injury after injury.

Also sick and tired of “them” . We all know they will get away with it now, guaranteed, so why all the angst and grumbling. Sure, boycott all their games and cup games and get other club supporters on board. As I see it, one of the main things needed doing, is to get other club supporters to realise this is not a Celtic/ them thing only.

Off to get out of the right side of bed.

    Sorry for grumbling arggghhhhhhh

  15. Can anyone confirm –

    (a) whether Rosenborg’s pitch is real grass; and/or

    (b) whether Cifti is actually listed in our Euro squad list? [but please don’t misinterpret why I’m asking ;-) ]

One friendly wouldnt have made much difference at all. Who knows the schedules? If you mean the club knew the schedule then they can do absolutely nothing about a lack of competitive football before the 26th July. Completely out of their control

  17. Imo Celtic were poor all night, lots of the ball with little purpose and to many sideway passes. We played in front of them all night

    Gordon done well

    Luston was poor

    Centrebacks were decent

Kt had beating of his man but to many passes inside when he had beating of his man, not good

New signing was not great, lots of good running between line not noticed

Armstrong was in and out of it, best of the three

    Brown had a bad one

    Sinclair was not good

Forrest was decent but needed to get to byline more

How rogic stayed up top is beyond my comprehension so uncomfortable up there.

Roger’s is a very good coach but he did not do to we’ll last night

Don’t think any of the above would disagree and if theyou would maybe they should remember learning never stops and constructive criticism is good

Hope we preform better over there

  18. CROPPYBHOY

I for one do not doubt Brendan but he is fallible like everyone else.

Last night he got it wrong from player and tactical selection.

That happens but what was worrying was there was no response to something that clearly wasn’t working until very late.

Was like watching Delias Celtic in Europe.

I understand injury forced his hand but we seemed to have taken Rosenberg to lightly and got caught out.

Rogic gave the ball away constantly and his sole purpose seemed to be to block areas that Armstrong and Nt’cham could have attacked. Was very surprised Brendan failed to recognize that until very late in the game and moved him back which led to Armstrong finally having a decent shot.

Also the midfield formation was so unbalanced Brown who at least worked hard constantly faced two men.

This left the defense exposed most of the night and if not for their toothless attack we would probably have lost.

I think we were not well prepared but hopefully a good coach like Brendan will have learned and made the adjustments for the second leg.

  19. The Battered Bunnet on

-What do you reckon the score will be?

-Dunno, it’s a Euro knockout tie. Anything-Nil will do.

As it turned out 0-0, that’ll have to do.

I saw the debate on the last thread about the score, one poster saying 0-0 at home in the first leg was better than a 2-1 win, the other arguing the toss.

Thanks to the wonders of the interwebs, the answer can be easily found via a study of the data from European knockout ties over the past 60 years.

The data shows that, where two sides are relatively well matched, the outcome of the tie is equally proabable whether the first leg finished 2-1 or 0-0. In both cases, there’s a 50% probablity.

Celtic have an evens chancce of progressing, plus or minus a factor for the relative strength of the sides.

You can read all about it via http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0377221715004889

  20. Dubaibhoy-Ur they still deid? on

I hear Brendan’s hoping the VVD to Liverpool move is closed before the return leg. Otherwise its Tony Stokes or Frank McGarvey…

  21. TBB

Thanks for that! Glad the Timreaper didn’t find that first!

However, no matter the stats, to say not being a goal ahead is just as good as being a goal ahead before a second-leg tie, just doesn’t convince me, or make me doubt what I’d prefer.

I mean, if stats showed that more sides win a match at home when 0-0 at half-time, could you imagine the home side hitting the bar in the 44th minute and their fans saying ‘thank feck for that!”?

    Hail Hail!

  22. The Battered Bunnet on

It’s only stats Beatbhoy, but they indicate that you and Timreaper can be equally happy/unhappy with the result. :¬)

  23. The good thing about getting older is your memory is not so good so won’t remember that game in a few weeks time, maybe evenue next week if we can get a good result hh

This is all the more reason that any legal action should be funded by the organisation most affected by the cheating.

Now just who would that be.

  25. celtic want champions league football on the cheap hence why no strikers its how dd and peter work with their brogues on

Social media post from the Griff in the last hour saying he’s looking forward to getting back onto the pitch. It’s a boost we could do with at the moment.
