With Brendan, there’s a belief

620

‘No one said it was easy.’ How true. When I heard the Celtic line-up I responded, “Would take a 1-0 right now”. No strikers and a new central defensive pairing is not the way to start an important game.

A couple of years ago, you would have an ominous feeling right now, but with Brendan, there’s a belief that we will be prepared in Trondheim. We need to put the ball in the net. Even if we concede first, subsequently putting the ball in the net resolves a lot of issues.

My expectation is that we saw the best of Rosenborg last night. Celtic were clearly well below their best. When the teams meet again Celtic will be one week fitter, and I expect personnel changes.

For so long we missed the kind of football that knots your stomach. This one is hugely important. Enjoy the tension!

We spent six million, we have no strikers cos one is banned and one is injured..but then you knew that eh…

Any club hoping to feature in the CL should have more than two strikers.

We had two strikers in all of last year’s undefeated season.

Same two guys were avalable and played against Linfield just over a week ago.

Unlucky with injury, and harsh punishment for a juvenile, unprofessional gesture at the end of the last game are the reasons we had no strikers last night.

We could have went with Aitchison, but signing a new striker within a few days in these circumstances would not be sensible.

A few things went against us in the lead-up to yesterday’s game. Injury, suspension. And don’t forget the change to the Friday of the Linfield game meant that the first-teamers missed the Lyon game on the Saturday. Another game would have helped with fitness.

I think recruitment could have been better. I thought our three priority positions should have been keeper, centre-back and striker. And that was before Boyata’s injury. Also a bit surprised that McGregor has fallen out of the picture a bit so far.

Next week will be a different game. Rosenborg will have to come out and attack. That will help us, although we can’t forget the defensive side.

    Cautiously optimistic!

  5. If we sign a striker to cover Moussa’s absence it will be a Dion Dublin type of guy.

No up front’s and no resale.

    And probably no use.

Maybe Rodgers was confident that we could score goals without a striker. He didn’t seem to be that bothered about signing another.

  15. DANSO_1888,

Good strikers don’t grow on trees and need to be available. Any striker worth buying will cost more than we can afford. How many ‘strikers’ have we bought in recent years that couldn’t hit a coo’s @rse with a banjo?

Dead easy running a football team/club from a keyboard.

For a group who’s whole being is about transparent, open and accountable governance, the SFSA’s silence on this matter is telling.

I got about 20 tweets a day telling me about membership and survey numbers but not a peep about improper registration.

I think you’ve called it right with your “move on” comment.

  18. Any club with serious Champions League ambitions need the requisite number of cows and banjos at the training facility to allow the strikers to practice with properly strung and tuned banjos and properly inflated cows. That’s the problem right there…

  19. When and hopefully a while Brendan Rogers leaves, it’s comforting to know that we have the pick of the blogs football managers experts right here on CQN.

Never read so much Colin Nish in all my life, honestly do you read your posts? If half of this was over heard by me on a bus, in a bar or an airplane I’d have to, .

    Thanks

The clue is in the missing ‘s’, which I only just noticed there, as I had opened Gene’s original link earlier.

Just goes to show how important it is to look carefully, especially if they’re looking for cash.

  21. The Battered Bunnet on

Brendan’s preferred attacking system uses one player at point, two wide and one behind. The point man is the fulcrum. Whether Leigh or Moussa, it’s pretty effective in most games against most sides, evidenced by the considerable number of goals scored against opponents of all standards last season. No great insight there.

The problem with it is that it needs just one striker, the other sitting on the bench (when both are fit).

If Leigh was able/ learned how to play in one of the auxilliary roles – wide or withdrawn – we would most likely buy a third striker who would sit on the bench when the other two were fit. But Leigh hasn’t been used there bar a couple of early games when Brendan first took over.

Absent that, we’re unlikely to be inclined to buy a third striker who is both capapble of playing to the required standard, and who is content to get no starts unless the other two are injured/suspended simultaneously.

And unless Brendan elects to adopt a different system, we’ll periodically find ourselves in the same position – one striker short of an attacking team.

Never read so much Colin Nish in all my life, honestly do you read your posts?

Is it Colin Nish to expect that a club that is about to issue a very healthy set of figures should have a pro active approach to player acquisition.

I believe Brendan employs the ‘Barn Door Technique’. I guess it’s a bit like Zonal v Man Marking…

  26. Big Moussa seems to have missed more games than he has played in last few months and if he isn’t to play again until September then we really should have got cover in for these qualifiers which are now worth circa 30 million.

This has been staring us in the face since before the treble was completed. It was a gamble to play him against Linfield when he clearly was not fit.
