Withering in the vine, sin and orange

633

At 21-years-old Tom Rogic should be strongly staking his claim for a central midfield berth at Celtic.  The fact that he’s not is a disappointment to the player, and apparently the nation of Australia.  It’s also a disappointment to you and me.  He has the physique and the passing ability but after some tentatively positive performances last season he hasn’t kicked on as hoped.

There could be lots of reasons for this, it’s not necessarily the ‘fault’ of the player, his ability or the club, but football careers wither on the vine when clubs hoard talent.  If Tom can get some game-time under his belt at Melbourne Victory, and potentially get to Brazil in the summer, we will have a better indication if he is the real deal.

Someone just text me, “Rangers need to be a long-term sustainable business and that’s the bottom line.  The club needs to change”, from that memorable Craig Whyte interview to The Scotsman in 2012. Groundhog Day….

So Fifa presidential candidate, Jerome Champagne, has proposed the introduction of a sin-bin, to be invoked by the referee brandishing an orange card.  What’s your view on this, is there a universal association between sin and orange, or is this another subversive plot by Celtic fans? I have my suspicions.

@ScotFans4Change I want clarification – not silence – on the contentious issue regarding the liquidation of Rangers Football Club.

I want to know how Stewart Regan, when asked about the status of new Rangers when interviewed by BBC can, not once but twice, refuse to give clarification of the situation yet can offer guidance to people like ASA or ECA.

I want to know then, if he cannot be honest and transparent about this – does that mean he has something to hide?

I want to know then, if he has something to hide, is he fit to govern the game in Scotland?

I want to know then, if he is not fit to govern the game in Scotland, why is he still in a job?

I want to know if the game of ours exists to save one entity – where rules can be broken, ignored or new ones created to keep up the pretence that one club never went into liquidation.

I want to know then if the game is bent towards saving one entity, why should I pay one thin dime on something that isn’t really a sport at all?

I want to know if the people in charge really do have the courage to administer the rules, without fear or favour?

I want to know if the “transfer of membership” is now a blueprint for all clubs – where they are free to spend money that doesn’t belong to them without a care in the world because liquidation is merely a shuffling of the corporate papers and a change of company number?

I want to know if Hearts or Dunfermline would’ve been treated any differently had they not managed to get a CVA?

I want to know whether it is now accepted that Scottish football is now franchise football.

I want to know their definition of a “club”.

John Keane was the man that stopped us going the same way as oldco. Thereafter Fergus brought us out of the dark ages. He may not have had the greatest manner but he done everything he said he would, including being up front by telling us he would walk away after five years and that he would take his interest.

He was not old School, his strategy was not all about stopping oldco, it was also about building a foundation for the future. Fergus McCann deserves his name to be written as the man that had the business acumen, foresight to build us a 60,000 Stadium fit for our great Club.

John Keane saved the day but Fergus McCann took our great Club by the scruff of the neck and saved us from ending up like oldco, that was not the reason he did it. Yes, he was a Celtic Fan in his day but overall he is a business man.

I do agree with you that he did not achieve us our rich European or champions league history; that was down to coaching staff and players.

Your entitled to your view mate but for me personally I have a lot, a helluva lot to thank Fergus McCann for.

All that said, I actually think that Fergus would agree with you. Although a ruthless business man, he was and is a humble man at heart in my opinion.

    Tin hat on here…..

There would have been other people stepping in to secure the Bank Overdraft if he didn’t do it in 1994.Too much sentimental guff written about this hard nosed little businessman who made himself a great business at Celtic.Respect for what he did…..but a visionary outside of Scottish football….Nah ….not for me.

    ======================

No there wouldn’t. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

I was well versed in the situation at the time; associated with an extremely wealthy businessman who was one of the Bank Of Scotland’s major customers in the central belt.

He had affection for Celtic but no passion, and was approached by the Bank late ’93 regards the Celtic situation and possible land purchase.

i.e the Bank Of Scotland and its incumbent Huns had Celtic on the hook.

When the time came, they believed it was a formality that the club would die.

Fergus came out of nowhere. There was no-one else. No-one.

Meant to add, Tommy Burns was and always will be all time Celtic Hero, have always loved Tommy. Problem was then that Tommy and Fergus were like two peas in a pod, both head strong and both wanted the best for Celtic. Tommy had the footballing acumen and Fergus the business. Problem was Tommy wanted the Players on the Park whilst Fergus wanted to rebuild our Club and then the Players. There was only ever going to be one winner, sadly! At the time I was in agreement with Tommy’s plan. However, in hindsight Fergus’s blueprint (forgive the metaphor) has proved to be correct.

When you say others that Fergus cast aside, who were they? I don’t think there was anybody around at the time who could have done what Fergus done.

Re Fergus – a flawed hero in Celtic’s history . Like Sir Robert Kelly before him he was far from universally approved of by the supporters during his time in charge. Like Sir Robert he deserved quite a lot of the criticism aimed at him. But I was in a financial institution where Fergus banked his millions whilst the club was heading for the rocks.

Others, most notably John Keane , put their own money where their mouths were but not to the same extent as Fergus. We’d have been sunk without him and would have a stadium that held 40000. We’d have had the obnoxious, biased Jim Farry in charge at the SFA well into this century without Fergus.

He badly mishandled the situation in the spring and summer of 1998 which led to our embarrassing display in Zagreb of that there is no doubt and I doubt he’d have been much different from Lawell, Bankier et al when it comes to the Green Brigade though I suspect Celtic’s position with regard to Zombie FC would be much clearer if Fergus was in charge. The Tommy Burns situation was also badly handled but at the time I have to say that Tommy looked to have blown himself out by the time he was sacked. That night we lost to Falkirk when Tommy was interviewed he looked a truly broken man.

Don’t mean to go on as much mate but without Fergus we’d have gone under. Do you really think if that had happened in 1994 that any team playing out of Celtic Park would be allowed to say it had won the European Cup in 1967?

  12. Regarding possible rule changes I have never understood why the game should stop for a substitution. The 4th official should highlight the change as at present but it should be up to the player coming off to trot over and instigate the swap. The 4th official should control the change and the game should just continue.

Only problem would be if the other team also wanted a sub in which case the 4th official should only hold the boards up for 2 mins and if the player does not come off then the boards change and the next substitution is now highlighted.

As much as many on here wouldn’t like to admit it, events at Snake Mountain over the last 2 years have (consciously or not), resulted in a halcyon reappraisal of The Bunnet’s time here.

There’s no doubting the achievements of the wee man, but ideas such as getting him back to unfurl the flag when Der Hun have (hopefully) capitulated for a second time, is a bit cheap and reactionary. Especially as there have been plenty of opportunities for him to do so since he left.

Normally agree with content of your posts but not with regard to Fergus. He did exactly as he said he was going to do. Invested made a humongous profit and let the fans take over.It may have been at the fourth attempt but rather that than the fifth when the 10 for the died club would have been a reality and my worst fears would have come to fruition. Furthermore this was when their scamming and cheating (5 for 10 anyone? Plus ca change) Contrary to your assertion about the bank debt I don’t remember queues of Celtic sugar daddies around the block to pull us out of our financial black hole.

Furthermore without Fergus we wouldn’t have had to worry about Europe, Champions league et al because we would have been like yon club from Govan. Deid.. and would have been competing as a new club after liquidation.

That is not by any manner or means to excuse his treatment of Tommy Burns or Wim the Tim or his myopia re Jock Brown but this did enable Mr Venglos to take over to entice the wonderful Lubo into our family(every cloud etc).

To summate I certainly feel he is more than worthy to unfurl the 3 IAR flag more so to rectify the treatment he received the last time he did it which as I said in an earlier post was a stain on the collective Celtic character. Having said that everyone is entitled to their opinion and the ability to express it in the way in which we do is what makes this blog special.

I’m pretty sure Sepp Blatter came up with the ol’ orange card idea sometime back, so it is certainly a bit of a surprise to read that it is part of Champagne’s campaign. Is this the best an aspiring head of FIFA can come up with. Let us have some honesty from the candidates, how about; “you thought Blatter was corrupt, wait until you get a load of me”?

Or would that be worth a red card?

John Keane put up one million pounds of his own money when we were up against the wall – no guarantees for him, no strings attached by him.

I would like to think that if I was a wealthy man I would’ve done exactly the same, but who knows? I’m not and I didn’t. He did.

Fergus came in and told us EXACTLY what he was going to do – including details of his own profit and when he would walk away – then he did it. To the letter.

Both of these men saved our club when the banks and the Scoddish establishment were gleefully looking forward to burying us. For that reason, to me, they are heroes.

Every time I go into CP these days I look around and have to catch my breath. I won’t begrudge Fergus one of his famous thin dimes for the legacy he had the vision to leave for us.

Ryecatcher, I get what you’re saying, and by all accounts I wouldn’t have fancied working for The Bunnet, but he had the vision of the new Celtic Park and he propelled us out of the graveyard into where we are now. Which is a very good place IMO.

    Scotland’s Referee Problem

    Posted by Kraljski

Now as a Celtic supporter I’m obviously brainwashed into having an issue with referee’s and anyone employed by the SFA, I go about my day-to-day business with the sole purpose of being obsessed in other clubs and being paranoid about how authoritative figures have it against my team.

It’s always when we lose or drop points that we Celtic fans bleat about decision’s going against us so in a way to go against that notion I thought I’d finally get round to bumping my gums about the issue which will not go away and that for me affects all Scottish Premier League teams. I don’t watch other league football so I can’t comment much on the lower leagues.

I’ll put this bluntly, I don’t care as a football supporter if associations find it difficult to recruit officials, I understand that it’s a difficult job but be it you, me, Neil Lennon, Scott Brown, Gordon Strachan anyone from coaches, players or even directors, if you’re failing at your chosen role then you should be held accountable for your actions and if managers & players are asked to explain their decisions then so must officials and those that put them in their position.

All season we’ve witnessed appalling decision’s from professional part-time officials. I use the term professional as these “Grade officials are paid more than the vast majority of players and are given the luxury of mid-season breaks to sunny Spain. I wonder why there wasn’t the same uproar with the official’s and their jaunt’s as there was with our mid-season break in Turkey.

After the bleating about official’s being picked on a few season’s back we had more bleating that they weren’t being paid enough. They didn’t feel their several hundred pounds pay packet for a match day merited their abilities and demanded that they deserved more support, less criticism and more pay. More pay they got.

So this season we’ve witnessed several instance’s of ridiculous officiating and rather than be honest, responsible official’s we’re being told that they can’t as –

“The problem we have with referees speaking after a game is that a number of matters may be referred to the Compliance Officer for review and a referee commenting could prejudice any case.

We are very restricted in what we can voice and I think it would bring more problems than benefits to the referees. We need to protect them as best we can so it’s best they don’t speak to the media after matches.”

Doesn’t explain the silence we’ve had before the Compliance Officer (Vinny Lunny) began his role back in October 2011.

So part-time referee’s in Scotland are paid more than some full-time players, they aren’t allowed to explain their awful decision-making, they get a sunny jaunt to La Manga year after year and the person that is credited with the role to govern them reckons –

“we are doing well domestically” –

Aye John Fleming, tell that to St Johnstone & Hearts about Brian Colvin’s performance on Saturday, tell most teams whenever Wullie Collum officiate’s in their games. How about Bobby Madden’s various honest mistake’s at Celtic Park.

Credit to Joe McHugh’s blog on @VideoCelts who has documented some other comment’s from various managers about various poor referee’s.

Hopefully this ranting blog doesn’t go too far though, we don’t want our top-notch referee’s and assistant’s spitting the dummy again leading to official’s from lesser league’s in Europe showing them how to do their jobs.

Last word, that bastion of truth Dougie McDonald is back within the SFA payroll & another Dallas being fast tracked up the brotherhood, so much to look forward to.

  26. Gene,

Ref adds 1,2 or 3 mins on at the end, depending on level of stoppages during the game.

Then watch stops every time the ball goes out of play from 85 mins. Or somert to that effect ;)
