Word for the day: Ajer

230

With the arrival of Marvin Compper all four of Celtic’s central defenders will feel an increase in pressure to make the starting line-up. Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko may already have other places on his mind but neither Dedryck Boyata and Kristoffer Ajer will know where they fit in the manager’s plans.

Ajer (19) fits our style of play better than any of the existing options. So much of our play depends on the central defenders being able to control a quick pass, move it on, or run with the ball. Boyata and Simunovic accomplished this well away to Anderlecht, but their movement, first touch and composure on the ball has dipped well below that level.

I have some concerns about Ajer defending. He has not been tested rigorously and I have noticed a tendency to allow strikers to drift into space, so we should be cautious about putting too much responsibility onto his shoulders.

What is clear is that we play better football and are a better team with him in the side. That alone is enough to merit keeping his place.

I think the Liverpool song about having 2 cathedrals make it sound like its a rarity – but there would be 1 per diocese

  8. I like to read Phils stuff, not believing most of it,but usually there are a couple of points you can relate to.

At the moment,we all know they are in dire straits, cash wise,so,unless they are receiving an absolute fortune from the sponsors of this tournament in the States, then the 1 month off will be crippling them. Not a penny coming in,with all the bills and wages to be paid.Would this have been included in the 4 million they would require to see them through?.

  18. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Further to the earlier posts about Paul McGrath. What a signing he would have been for us , an incredible player.

When we beat the Huns 2 1 at Ibrox in March 1988, Paul was sitting in the front row of the main stand with Bran McLair among other Celtic fans . This was a time when we got part of the main stand and enclosure there .

Paul got a fantastic reception from our support around him, in the enclosure and those in the Celtic End who could see him and Choccy.

When Paul signed for Derby, their manager at the time, Jim Smith , was interviewed on Football Focus. He explained it was the easiest and quickest transfer negotiation he was ever involved in. The negotiation was competed in half an hour with the added bonus of Paul turning up with his lawyer only, no entourage to complicate matters.

  19. You lot chatting about my local area ?

John 51…picked up a foundation plate today ..thank you ..

  20. Thoroughly enjoyed Arsenal v Chelsea could easily have been 5.5.

    A draw probably fair.

Game had everything. Referee a few dodgy decisions too and what about Morata three one on ones and missed them all.

I’m not sure if the ex-Celt you mention was Pat Crerand but I do know that he was keen on Paul McGrath appearing in the hoops.

*It was, we also discussed the opportunity he thought he had of coming in as Jock’s assistant, he even spoke with Desmond White in his office. Another former Celt put an end to that and we ended up with Davie McParland.
