Working the globe with Bernabei

298

Alexandro Bernabei was finally announced as a Celtic player by former club, Lunas, in the early hours of this morning.  At 21, the left back is the same age Greg Taylor was when he joined the club in 2019.

The environment Alexandro worked in at Lanus could hardly be more different than what he walks into at Celtic.  Lunas won only three of the last 20 league games their former defender played in, including his final game, which saw Alexandro red carded.  The pressure to win was significantly less than in Glasgow.

That factor possibly permits young talent more scope to flourish; teams stuck somewhere in the no man’s land that is lower midtable of a 26-team league, need not stress about winning or losing too much.  Even relegation is a multi-year process in Argentina, no one season alone can put you down.

One year before Alexandro’s contract expired, the reported £3.75m fee is a discount on the money Lanus earned when selling a central defender to Parma last year for €10m, or a midfielder to Atlanta for €6m in 2020.  Hopefully that discount is due more to the expiring contract than any perception of the player’s prospects.

Welcome to Celtic, Alexandro!  There is a lot of hard work ahead, but it is great to see Celtic work the globe to fine value.  Contrast with the days we travelled the M8 to find Chris Killen could scarcely be greater.

I knew Preben Arntoft back in the 80s.

His wife is a port lassie half scots / half maltese, beautiful family, great parents, they lived across the back from my grannies.

he would come up the road in the summers, and used to doing a training routine every morning in the garden,

us kids hung about the fence fascinated.

his bhoy was some player, even coming up to saint stephens and playing with us, he was laudrup like, supers balance, skills, speed, you couldnt get near him,

even more so, his wee sister whats a brilliant player.

one of the fellas that worked with me in ibm married another sister and would be to prebens every summer when they went back to denmark.

Preben was a lovely man, but had that hard as nails look about him, totally solid specimen, i found it funny him getting called “Ben”, never heard it once by the inlaws of his, always Preben.

    1966-04-30: Morton 0-2 Celtic, League Division 1

    Review

Celtic pressed relentlessly in the first half but the only goal came just before the half time whistle when Jimmy Johnstone put away a bobbling ball in the Morton area which refused to be cleared and was deflected past the keeper. Morton should have been ahead having missed a penalty earlier in the half. Despite missing the penalty Morton showed fighting qualities that only a team struggling to stay in the top division might be expected to. A minute from the end Johnstone sent over a cross and Lennox beat his marker to head home a second goal and send Morton down to the Second Division.

With Rangers winning too the teams were equal on points with Rangers having played one more game. Celtic had two more games to play and the league title would go right down to the wire.

Cheers mate. There was something more magical about players in that era, even though they were more down to earth types – if that’s not a contradiction.

  6. Alexandro looked happy in his released interview and photos until meets the press, looked immediately bemused by their questions. Didn’t sound like anyone had done any research.

Got a good feeling about this season, don’t think many will want us in the CL draw and confident by the time the season starts we’ll have a good squad mix available.

Pleased also to hear the closer relationship between B Team and First that Ange sound checked. Maybe a few surprises contributing the season, would love that 🍀

Trivia1967-10-11: Celtic 7-1 Morton, League Cup SF – The Celtic Wiki

Both teams were trained by ex-Celts – Celtic by Neil Mochan and Morton coached and trained by Eric Smith, and Morton had ex-Celt Jim Kennedy at right back and captain. Tony Taylor the substitute was also ex-Celtic, as was outside left Gerry Sweeney

Jock Stein played the same team that had beaten Hibernian 4-0 at the weekend. Morton left their team to the last minute as Laughlin, Gray and Allan had all been fighting injuries.

One of the most powerful Celtic performances by Celtic during Jock Stein’s reign.

Celtic play in green shirts, white shorts and white socks.

Morton played in unfamiliar white jerseys, black shorts and white socks.

A roof was in the process of being built on the traditional Rangers end of the stadium.

Celtic now face Dundee in the final. In the other League Cup semi final Dundee beat St Johnstone 3-1 at Tannadice.

    Review

Celtic destroyed Morton with a devastating performance at Hampden despite the Morton team putting up a fight full of heart.

The quality of the goals was outstanding with Hughes’ two goals the pick of the bunch. The first came from a Lennox cross after two Celtic players had consecutively dummied the ball and the other a trademark charge upfield and a ferocious shot to finish.

Preben Arentoft of Morton had the privilege of the game’s best goal with a blockbuster shot on the run.

Until we see the breakdown of the distributions from the new CL format nobody can say for sure what it means for Celtic but a 20% increase in the deal suggests we’ll still be gnawing our arms off at the prospect of missing out on the CL riches until 2027 at least.

But we are gonna get 35 million for CL group stage, 6 million for Australian tour and 4.6m already in for christie, ajer add ons and doaks sale. Total income 45.6 million so more in than out despite the spend outlined above.

Spend the remainder of the transfer window trying to offload Jullien, boli, soro, ajeti, shaw, Urhoghide, robertson, doolan, johnston. Subject to success in moving a couple of the higher earners on bring in a left sided centreback and forward. If unsuccessful stick and try again in January transfer window.
