World records now beckon for Celtic

605

It was a league game at Tannadice, Hogmanay 1966, which ended the Lisbon Lions 26 game unbeaten domestic run, a record which stood until yesterday. Stein’s Celtic were comfortable and led with 20 minutes to go, but United scored twice in three minutes and before the Champions had time to realise they were in trouble, it was too late.

That’s how historic runs end.

It’s only this season anyone has paid attention to that specific record, such were the overwhelming achievements which unfolded in the months ahead for the men who would become known as Lions. With the League Cup already secured, they added the Scottish Cup and the League title, before becoming the first team to break the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese hegemony on the European Cup.

The serendipity of one of the Lions records falling while we celebrate the 50th anniversary of their great achievements should not be lost.

Season 66-67 wasn’t just about Lisbon. Celtic retained the league for the first time since the Great War – a 50-year gap without defending the league title! They won the treble, the (then competitive) Glasgow Cup, and finished off with a virtuoso performance at the Bernabeu. They changed Scotland forever; nothing would ever be the same again.

Hearts only offered effective opposition for around 5 minutes yesterday, but if/when we lose a domestic game this season, it’s likely to follow the format of St Johnstone’s visit last midweek. St Johnstone defended every Celtic attack bar one and created a chance which could have bounced off the post more generously for them.

All the pressure and superiority in the world are irrelevant in the face of the statistical certainty that, in one game, a dominant team will miss all their chances and concede one of the few they are called to defend.

More records beckon for this Celtic team, not just Scottish ones. Benfica’s world record 29-game consecutive league game winning record has proven impossible to match. But, there’s one team with a chance of doing so this season…………

I misread it, my most profound apologies, you can simmer down now. Is Henry singnig today Tm like you said yesterday?

The mention of Cowglen and NSB got my memory working on the number of football teams that emerged from the Cowglen HQ from 1966 to 1977.

The obvious starter for me because both Bournesoup and I feature, is Boydstone Rovers. They were a late comer (hence the choice of name based on Boydstone Road as most others had been used up by 1977) and Bournesoup is in front row second left and I’m in top row end right above the hirsute chaps in front. (My moustache being my attempt to look older than my then 31 years. )

The other teams names I recall were:

    SBD (Saving Banks Division)

    NSB. (National Savings Bank)

    DNS (Dept for National Savings)

    Cowglen (probably the most successful),

    Invac (Investment Accounts)

DNS CC (Dept for National Savings Computer Centre)

I think there might have been 9 teams at one point but the above seven are those I remember.

On any given Saturday morning there were at least 30 teams or more from the Civil Service Saturday Morning League traversing the city to play the best game in the world.

That picture is from Boydstone’s first game at Glasgow Green. The “strips” were T shirts from a promotional campaign involving bumble bees because on the Monday there was no Boydstone and by the Friday we had committed to using the surplus (from SBD I think) to fill an unexpected vacancy in the CSSM league.

Bournesoup only guested in that first 11-0 defeat and Boydstone’s rise to the top tier in 4 years had nothing to do with his return to SBD and more to do with my use of management power to stalk and threaten players from other teams to join Boydstone.

This pic of the top tier players contains a couple of guys in the originals bolstered by a few great lads from Castlemilk

Neither would I mate. Although I hope Craig Gordon is using events to get himself just a pay rise.

  4. Why don;t we just contact Bournemouth and offer CG for 8 million then. I reckon Bailly is pretty good too and after a few games he could be as good as Craig.

    KINGLuBO

  5. Ernie- i think the Craig Gordon bid came from right out of the blue.A difficult one to weigh up, obviously BR had his doubts and de Vries was signed, as BSR said from being dropped , to being offered a 4 year contract in a matter of weeks.I’m sure BR has been looking at GKs possibly going out of contract in the summer, and thinking possibly about selling.I think if we get Chelsea up to £5 mil, we will sell him, put DDV in till end of the season, and it gives us 4 months to get a new GK

  6. KINGLUBO :

Why don’t Chelsea hold their keeper to contract and stop unsettling ours… Why?

  7. northeast ghirl on

Yeah, it must be so difficult only earning £20000.00 a week. Poor house, Craig Gordon should show some loyalty to Celtic. If Chelsea really want him don’t insult us with a derogatory offer, they’re looking for £10 million for a goalkeeper who’s barely kicked a ball for them but offer us a third of that for a first choice.

    KTF

  8. Celtic have a replacement keeper lined up already. If chelsea offer 5mil (plus sell on clause). Bye bye craig

  9. I think Henderson might have played his way in to starting against the St Johnstone Hammer Throwers, he can handle the physical stuff.

  10. Kitalba,

on 20 grand a week the weans are hardly going to go hungry,

makes you wonder how the ordinary man manages, earning not much more than that in a year.

If Craig aint financially comfortable for him and his family bynow he should be having a word with his financial advisers

  11. NORTHEAST GHIRL:

    Come on girl – football – loyalty??? – 20 K a week v 50+k a week ??? – We had him on a pay to play contract.

Was it for a year? I can easily find out. So can you.

If somebody offered you triple your wage would you honestly not think about jumping ship if somebody else valued your services at 3 time what your current employee was paying you?

  12. GORDYBHOY64:

How much is PL on a week plus his annual bonus and he does not kick a ball nor run the risk of injusry.

Are you really dictating what people are allowed to earn or not. Who appointed you Trump in charges of wages?

  13. Auldheid,

I worked in the bank from 1979 to 2010, did not play for any the teams though. Recognise Tony Owens from the 2nd Pic.

Thought he was immense – metaphorically and he’s now eye to eye with boyatta in height! – and really hope he gets a run. Better than mcGregor both offensively and defensively.

  15. Kitalba,

    nobody appointed me anything,

i simply made a reply based on a post you made about CGs salary,

    i wont bother next time

  16. Good afternoon CQN’rs

If I were Brendan, and I’m not, I would take the money for Gordon and I’ll tell you for why.

It’s pretty much money for nothing as we signed him on a free. We will need to strengthen though, and the 3.5-5M we will recoup can be put into getting a new, ready made keeper in time for qualifiers or, reinvest it elsewhere on the park.

If we got Gordon on a free then we can easily get his replacement on a free too and looking at GKs out of contract in the summer, there is a plethora of adequate replacements.

Have a look yourselves, Transfermarkt is a very good tool.

  17. GORDYBHOY64:

Feel free – whatever, but I think it incredulous that anybody should ever try to restrict the earning potential of another if even only by opinion.

How do you know the state of Craig Gordon’s financial affairs?

You don’t, yet you tried to belittle his potential to earn.

I won’t say shame on you.

  18. Kitalba,

at what point in my post did i say CG should not be allowed to earn as much as he can,

i commented that his kids should not go hungry if he earns 20 grand a week, your figure,

and you are right i have no idea of his financial situation, same as you dont have an idea on PLs,

but you are happy enough to comment on that

  19. on the CG discussion i personally have seen little evidence on any improvement on his distribution with the ball at his feet , i say take the money.

  20. Paul67 et al

What we have here is an attempt, very successful it has to be said given the related publicity, to link the present Celtic team with that of the Lisbon Lions. I think the correct word is ‘vicariously’. For those of us actually there on 31/12/66 there was no collective ‘well at least Jock has set a domestic record’. Had I attempted that in the Jungle that day I would more likely have found myself on the wrong end of a full size bottle of McEwans India Pale Ale. Wielded by KevJungle. Celtic were unbeaten from August 1966 for 33 games, winning both the League Cup and the Glasgow, and winning four games in the European Cup. That is what we were celebrating, not a run of league games in the first half of the season. And anyways for those of us hooked into the history of the club, the record that really mattered were Willy Maley’s six League titles in a row at the start of the century, and his team’s later run of 62 league matches undefeated, which was of course during the Great War (For Civilisation). You want to compare unbeaten runs then tell me what Celtic’s unbeaten run is this season.

    And get back to me!

  21. GORDYBHOY64:

I know Craig Gordon plays football for Celtic, I know every game he plays he risks injury or worse, I know what he is reported to earn but I think I actually cut that back by 10k. It is easily found on the internet. I know he does not have, as of yet, a heated drive way for when it snows 6 times a year.

Goalkeepers in the EPL are earning in excess of 100k a week. That is not Celtic’s fault, it is not Peter Lawwells fault and it is not Craig Gordons fault either, But if he wants some of that, please don;t play the loyalty card (not that you did) not after we had him on a pay to play and then brought in a keeper to replace him and restrict his potential earnings further.

How loyal to Craig Gordon were Celtic Really… after careful and considered evaluation?

Put yourself in his shoes, after all, he isn’t a Celtic minded man.

    I still hope he stays.

    And gets a pay rise.

  22. Henry Onyekuru transfer back on?

Eupen are now expecting Henry Onyekuru to leave their club over the next two days.

It had appeared Onyekuru was staying until the summer after sporting director said the Celtic striker was looking likely to stay at the Belgian club until the summer.

But manager Jordi Condom, speaking after his side’s loss to Mouscron, has now revealed the situation has changed. He said: “I am not counting on Henry Onyekuru.”

  23. GORDYBHOY64:

PL’s wages and bonuses are public knowledge.

Unless he has a side contract.

  24. Kitalba,

okay we have established that at no point did i comment on what CG should be able to earn,

my opinion is that he is an excellent goalkeeper on his day, which is the majority of days,

if it costs a bit more to keep him at the club i would be happy to pay him it,if he wants to go south to earn more then so be it.

  25. ENNISBHOY on 30TH JANUARY 2017 1:50 PM

‘If we got Gordon on a free then we can easily get his replacement on a free too’

    ###

    Well, yes.

But would his replacement be any good?

What if BR, like Jock Stein, has no eye for a goalkeeper, and would rather stick with what he’s got than to try to find a replacement in a hurry. His last attempt to replace CG wasn’t particularly successful.

  26. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

On Craig Gordon neither here nor there, only reservation is who would replace him until summer, on balance unless the money is over £9M then no.

Loving the yanks demonstrating against trump for immigration restrictions Obama made law to placate Saudi :oD))) stoopid yanks

  27. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Whether Craig Gordon stays or goes, he will have done the right thing.

It will be up to him what decision he makes. Not Celtic. Not Chelsea.

A player has all the power, even when under contract. That is the reality.

Therefore, CG will base a decision on what is best for his family, himself and lastly, his career.

Personally, even though I would like him to end his career with us, I will respect his decision…..for what that his worth.

    On a more important matter.

What a chunkey, cheery chappie BSR looked in his team photo!

Not too sure about the bandido in the back row, though!!

  28. Chelsea need to come and offer 6 or 7 million. It’s that simple.

Celtic could then attempt to bed in De Vries for the qualifiers in July (while also looking for a keeper)

    Interesting option: David Marshall

  29. McClair, MacAvennie, Nicholas, Hay, Macari, Dalglish, Van Dyke. Wanyama, Foster.

No loyalty to Celtic, they went after the pound, they were not the only ones and they wont be the last ones.

    It is just life.

    Money talks.
