World records now beckon for Celtic

605

It was a league game at Tannadice, Hogmanay 1966, which ended the Lisbon Lions 26 game unbeaten domestic run, a record which stood until yesterday. Stein’s Celtic were comfortable and led with 20 minutes to go, but United scored twice in three minutes and before the Champions had time to realise they were in trouble, it was too late.

That’s how historic runs end.

It’s only this season anyone has paid attention to that specific record, such were the overwhelming achievements which unfolded in the months ahead for the men who would become known as Lions. With the League Cup already secured, they added the Scottish Cup and the League title, before becoming the first team to break the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese hegemony on the European Cup.

The serendipity of one of the Lions records falling while we celebrate the 50th anniversary of their great achievements should not be lost.

Season 66-67 wasn’t just about Lisbon. Celtic retained the league for the first time since the Great War – a 50-year gap without defending the league title! They won the treble, the (then competitive) Glasgow Cup, and finished off with a virtuoso performance at the Bernabeu. They changed Scotland forever; nothing would ever be the same again.

Hearts only offered effective opposition for around 5 minutes yesterday, but if/when we lose a domestic game this season, it’s likely to follow the format of St Johnstone’s visit last midweek. St Johnstone defended every Celtic attack bar one and created a chance which could have bounced off the post more generously for them.

All the pressure and superiority in the world are irrelevant in the face of the statistical certainty that, in one game, a dominant team will miss all their chances and concede one of the few they are called to defend.

More records beckon for this Celtic team, not just Scottish ones. Benfica’s world record 29-game consecutive league game winning record has proven impossible to match. But, there’s one team with a chance of doing so this season…………

    Natknow,

So I can look forward to you using CNN as and buzzfeed as objective honest sources of legitimate information and questioning of the new president.

I will also expect to see you offer the daily record and evening times as honest sources of information on everything Celtic, good stuff.

    Whatever…no skin etc.

  2. But I see you still want me to dismiss anything from a source you don’t like – just on the basis that you don;t like it!

    Priceless irony!

  3. Summa.

Fair doos. Apologies. I was speaking generally with regards the outpourings of sympathy generally associated with attacks on perceived white Christian capitalist western nationals.

Canamalar. Wee quicky Q. If it was an Obama Executive Order why was it not “actually” an Obama executive order and instead a Trump Executive Order. Maybe Obama decided it would do more harm than good or maybe he said “here Donalddick, sign this and publish in your first week in power, you’ll be a star”.

  4. But yes – if I fancy publishing a link to any news source on the blog I will do so as long as it doesn;t break blog rules. Sorry of that gets you a little prickly.

Feel free to post your own sources…

In first photo is that billy fox front row right??

I recognise your face from when I worked there between 71 and 80.

  6. Canamalar.

I do agree with you on the establishment line though. Time for a change there but if the answer to the Establishment is Trump then No Thanks! The democrats undemocratically shot themselves by backing Hilary the terrorist over a good decent honest man in Bernie Sanders who was also anti-establishment. But in that last sentence you have your answer to the non Democrat party manipulation.

  7. £40million for Moussa?

    Reluctantly sell I think.

However: should only happen with the agreement of Brendan. If not, then he will walk, and we will have a pile of cash but no manager.

  9. Canamalar – are you involved in the Resolution business?

If so, judging by your recent posts, I can see why it’s gone nowhere! :)

  10. Talk of selling Craig for £3 million or more. Talk of selling Moussa for £40 million. We do not need to sell regardless of the amount. Indeed did I not read a couple of Posters the other day saying we need to spend and if we don’t we may have to give some to the Taxman?

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  11. Joe Filippis Haircut on

If it is true and it is a big if and Chelsea offer £40 million for Dembele I believe there is no way we can refuse such an offer. We should bank £20 million and give Brendan £20 million to build the team. H.H.

Aawww. Wee Barry thinks Celtic fans want more competition.

Hmmmm – would that be £250m Other People’s Money type competition…..?

  15. Would imagine there will be a major infrastructure investment this quarter…..April looms ….Taxing times…

Hope Almore gets his Cafe a LA Celtique….

    Braw.

  16. Would be nice to stick to the dont need to sell line, if and its a big if Celtic do get the baseline figure £40m, might end up more from Chelsea or anyone else, for big Moussa then BR will need to get this to spend as he sees fit to improve the squad, at this stage of the window he has no chance of spending it.So I reckon he will not move in this window , maybe an agreement reached with another club to join in the summer baring injuries.

If anyone moves without the agreemnt of the manager, we will be looking for a new manager. Remember he is not frightened by the big fees mentioned having worked in England and knows the value of what he has player wise should they be the subject of bids, that reassures me as in the past we have not had value on the players sold particularly to Southampton

  17. Dessybhoy

Agree re the Southampton bit, Fraser was about right, VvD we were robbed big time, they are going to reap all the benefits while we get a piss poor sell on fee.

Brendan is right, big the players up to the hilt, tell the msm that they are worth mega bucks, it works, shame it disny work for the huns mind you :-)

    Natknow,

I objected because I I knew it was a lie the same reason I suggested you do some research score parroting lies. You chose to ignore that advice and support the lies, that’s your prerogative.

    MWD,

It was Obamas executive order that listed the countries, therefore the argument about why Saudi was not on the list, I was simply pointing out that Trump did not write the list or provide that executive order, while trying to explain why the question was not legitimate and the source used to justify the question was irrelevant and not a source to be trusted.

That Trump did not repeal it because it’s suits his agenda, which should have been the meejas main point, has been missed because ignorant sheep has accepted lies to counter lies.

The reality is/was a war mongering bitch in the pocket of Wall Street and the Saudis or a rogue self serving nutjob who wanted to change their foreign policy, by default if you rejected one you are left with the other, I choose to reject the warmonger there are no colours on this decision. You reject Trump then you accept the foreign policy status quo as the lesser evil, for me it’s black and white.

  20. If and it’s a BIG IF there is anything in the £40m for Mussa then for me if and it’s a BIG If the money was guaranteed to be reinvested in the team and every penny profit earned given to Brendan then I will drive Moussa to the airport myself.

MWD driving to the airport just to annoy the non driving to the airport demonstrators

  21. Kikinthenakas – Hail Hail fella I hope well.

Like yerself, I’m delighted with stuff that Brendan has borough to the club.

I have one regret,….that, Paddy McCourt isn’t here to be one of the beneficiaries of Brendan’s magic dust.

I just hope that sumdy who has too big an idea of himself,…..at the club, isn’t digging tunnels under Brendan.

Ye see,….I canny shake my paranoia about the Cellic hierarchy…..sadly. 30,000 empty seats before they bring in a manager ?

Lawwell’s lurking in the background tells me that there are still snakes in Cellic’s bed.

    Anyway,……take care fella, bye.

    ……off-oot….

  23. Evening everyone, just read back since last night, been very busy but have a few comments to make.

BRTH. – good story regarding wee Luigi, he was a first cousin of our family doctor and as a sickly child ( aged 5-7 ) he would regale me of tales of his wee cousin. He was also the source of tickets my Dad could never afford for myself and him to attend in our Euro glory years. A genuinely good man.

Craig Gordon. – not changed my mind if we get £3m plus, fair enough.

Moussa – looks likely he is off but we should get him back for another season on loan. It was always going to be that way.

St Johnstone away on Sunday – any tickets going spare? The lhad is up for the weekend after enjoying Lisbon and is keen to get to the match. Any help appreciated.

    Have a good night everyone…,HH

  24. It’s right to be sceptical and arrive at your own conclusions. But as I said – you can only really do so with confidence when you read widely and with a critical eye. You suggest I pick and choose what I read based on some pre-assumed legitimacy (or otherwise). Thanks for that advice, but I will chose to ignore and continue to read whatever I want with a critical eye. Off now to read some FACT!s from Kellyanne Conway – maybe she reads The Daily Star and KNOWS that Moussa is being sold for £34m!

    Hail hail and good luck!

CHELSEA have made a £34million offer for Celtic striker Moussa Dembele, according to reports.

    MWD,

Confused why you try to maintain any false claim that Saunders is relevant, the choice was Trump or Clinton and the majority on here clearly supported Clinton and don’t see any irony, it makes me laugh at the faux outrage, support the self serving war monger or the self serving greedy bassa, apparently the slaughter of innocents is less important than PC principles morals and ethics.

  28. Gordon,

Many thanks. I was afraid it might well be. I just hope (if we get through against ICT) that we play on the 5th, as I have been asked to do something on the 4th which is difficult to refuse.

  29. 16 roads - Celtic über alles... on

If the club sold Moussa we would need to move immediately and sign another striker, considering that LG is injured.

It’s not even the transfer fee but a question of wages for a suitable replacement.

We could sign Shane Long for say £12million but would have to pay £50k per week in wages.

    And therein lies the problem.

Can’t see it happening unless Chelsea make a ridiculous offer circa £50-60million.
