World’s most successful and coping with losing

114

Claims like ‘World’s most successful football club’ are meaningless to most football fans, as the vast majority are not attached to a club which can make such a boast.  We are more concerned about who is winning and the direction of travel at our club.

When Newco made a totem of this claim by plastering it all over their properties, they clearly never considered what would happen in the event the claim was no longer sustainable.  Losing it to a club in Serbia, or Egypt, would be awkward, but losing it to your nearest rivals?  Going from ‘World’s most successful’ to not even being Glasgow’s most successful overnight!  That’s going to sting.

The indignity of being forced to redecorate because Celtic have won more trophies than you is symptomatic of the mindset which caused Oldco to march off a cliff.  They could not deal with playing second fiddle to Celtic to the extent that they gambled ever-higher stakes instead of paying tax bills.

What we are talking about here is identity.  If your identity is intrinsically fixed to holding a position of primacy over others, no amount of red flags will stop you self-harming.  The need to be No. 1 is so great, you spend everything you can trying to achieve that status.

Every football fan wants their team to win, but if you cannot cope with losing without losing your sense of future survival, you should find another way to spend your weekends.

The problem Newco have now, is how to convince thousands of fans to climb off the summit and accept their place in the food chain is that of a cash cow for other clubs and a coefficient monkey for Celtic’s Champions League campaigns.

That message will not be evident this summer, but it’s coming to a stadium near you soon!

    “…a coefficient monkey…”

I predict that’s a phrase we’ll see often this summer. I’ll be using it as often as possible! Very good.

  2. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Usual oldfirm one-upmanship I see.

Wasn’t constantly going on about “newco” not considered to be “unambitious” not so long ago?

I would have thought most people would consider Real Madrid the most successful, certainly in Europe. To the extent that anyone really cares, that is.

The longer the summer goes the closer the Sevco will have come, by August , they’ll have won without another ball being kicked. There’s a pattern there now, SMSM had them down for a treble, as soon as they bludgeoned wee brother in the League Cup.

Rinse and repeat rebuilds, loans flotsam and jetsam their only constant is ‘stars’ that run out of contract. They’d better not make them having been too good, as by the start of next season only the very bad will still be there. The next group of refreshed Beaton’s and Silva’s will be lined up to batter Hertz again.

Their difficulty is the ever widening gap to Celtic, it was for Rainjurz and it’s bound to be with Sevco. It’s the hope that kills them, every time, the ‘Scottish’ editorial is desperate to create old firm equilibrium since they were declared by them, the same club, a myth they wear like a noose around their brass neck. What Celtic need is Brendan Rodgers heading and directing football, all summer long before he returns to the training ground where he’s already ticked all the boxes. No ‘red flag’ appointments, a fresh wind and we’re off to the new CL, and more fortunes for the bank.

The Celtic fan survey is “coming” (quote Michael Nicholson) apart from Dermot’s snaring of Brendan last year for the reprise, what exactly did the board do to save the double or enhance the match day experience, what are they doing for next season? stay away from SMSM, if you’re into sloganisms watch this space for the first club ever to win 55.

  4. Brendan is now in charge of all footballing matters at the club and reports directly to DD. I think eventually he will become an Executive Sporting Director with a place on the board and will hire and fire the Head Coaches and be responsible for the players who come into and leave the club, just my opinion of course, :)) por cierto

Went through to Glasgow yesterday, meet up with a fellow Celtic supporter in Rab Hawes for a coffee and a delicious Morton roll with a egg and a tattie scone mmmmm,we then went to the stadium were we noticed men working on the pitch again, seen it on Sunday when the legends were playing, a lot of money got spent on that pitch and they still have problems with it.

Coming as it does immediately after the end of possibly the wettest football season in history, that comment really takes the biscuit.

McCoist is now also saying that he believes that Brendan Rodgers will walk away from Celtic once again now that he has won the Double………..WISHFUL THINKING from the FAT LYING GARDENER …Methinks.

No doubt McCoist is getting ready to RUIN at least one of the European Finals this week with his shocking, so called Co Commentary. TNT Sports should be wise to this buffon by now, as they must be losing customers because of McCoist. I have turned over on several occasions when the Fat Gardener is on.

as much relevance to me as a club who liquidated in 2012.

why use it as a benchmark.

ignore their same club pish, it kills them

  12. One slight fly in the ointment here.

Because Atalanta finished 4th in serie A and Brugge sneaked a point call Cercle to win in Belgium then rangers will now dons it a whole lot easier with no Benfica or Brugge seeded above them in play offs and twente or USG or Fenerbace or another less strong side to play in 3rd rounds.

If they do get through they will be Pot 2 seed which makes little difference this year but they will

Claim the lions share of the tv pot due to 10 year co eff ruling.

So it’s not quite as easy as just winning the league now.

  13. a wee project manager sized birdie tells me celtic plc will spend just over £2m in routine maintainence PPM in this fiscal year, through to july 31st, most of it scheduled for may, june, july, including undersoil heating, pitch relaying and roof infrastructures,

also, infrastructure for UEFA hosting CL games wrt to sponsors tents and multi media.

  14. That’s a few times I’ve been critised on here by Celtic supporters for me saying what’s happening inside the stadium.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here, Rangers could possibly benefit from another Champions’ League ruling designed to ensure that the elite clubs accrue most wealth. R2FC doesn’t remotely have elite status but they just might derive accidental benefit from this ruling.

The CL is rigged to make it quite sure that a club like Celtic has only the slimmest of chances of any progression. Another Lisbon is, realistically, out of the question. In the now modern era Celtic’s only hope of serious contention in Europe would be joining the EPL. Whether that would be a good or bad thing is another matter altogether. In any case, it’s a highly unlikely scenario.

Gents apologies for not knowing – but what is the Huns definition of “World’s most Successful” ??

And where are we verses their definition ?

I am sure Google will give me the info – but I would need to search through a Hun fest to get the the answer and even that could be biased

    Thanks in advance

    “Coefficient monkey”…

…for clubs who can’t field a team in Europe sufficiently competitive to win its own points.

It’s a regrettable consequence of our policies that we rely on others to do what we cannot achieve ourselves, and of course, it has a very short term benefit.

No automatic qualification for the Scottish Champions next year. But Oh! how we laughed at the coefficient monkey that grinds our organ.

  28. Apologies but my earlier attempt to post this in readable English failed. Maybe because I am on a lake in northern Finland right now. At 29 degrees and in glorious sunshine what’s not to like.

Seriously though as Fritzong suggests there is one unintended consequence here. One slight fly in the ointment which could benefit them and damage us from a rule intended to help the big boys.

Because Atalanta finished 4th in serie A and Brugge sneaked a point call Cercle to win in Belgium then rangers will now find it a whole lot easier with no Benfica or Brugge seeded above them in CL play off round and only Twente or USG or Fenerbace or Kiev Dynamo to play in 3rd rounds.

If they do get through they will be Pot 2 seed which makes little difference this year but they will

Claim the lions share of the Scottish tv pot due to 10 year co eff ruling. Hence the £40m or more is far from guaranteed for us.

So it’s not quite as easy as just winning the league now. Personally I wouldn’t put it past them to get through although Salzburg or Lille or others may think differently.
