World’s most successful and coping with losing

114

Claims like ‘World’s most successful football club’ are meaningless to most football fans, as the vast majority are not attached to a club which can make such a boast.  We are more concerned about who is winning and the direction of travel at our club.

When Newco made a totem of this claim by plastering it all over their properties, they clearly never considered what would happen in the event the claim was no longer sustainable.  Losing it to a club in Serbia, or Egypt, would be awkward, but losing it to your nearest rivals?  Going from ‘World’s most successful’ to not even being Glasgow’s most successful overnight!  That’s going to sting.

The indignity of being forced to redecorate because Celtic have won more trophies than you is symptomatic of the mindset which caused Oldco to march off a cliff.  They could not deal with playing second fiddle to Celtic to the extent that they gambled ever-higher stakes instead of paying tax bills.

What we are talking about here is identity.  If your identity is intrinsically fixed to holding a position of primacy over others, no amount of red flags will stop you self-harming.  The need to be No. 1 is so great, you spend everything you can trying to achieve that status.

Every football fan wants their team to win, but if you cannot cope with losing without losing your sense of future survival, you should find another way to spend your weekends.

The problem Newco have now, is how to convince thousands of fans to climb off the summit and accept their place in the food chain is that of a cash cow for other clubs and a coefficient monkey for Celtic’s Champions League campaigns.

That message will not be evident this summer, but it’s coming to a stadium near you soon!

  1. As the old Zen Master said ” we’ll see”.

Last season in spite of being in a very healthy financial position Celtic according to accounts of both clubs spent less on players than R2ngers did.

The title race became more competitive than in previous years ( bar Covid season ) as a result.

If Celtic spend to be more competitive in the CL and spend wisely, the chances are the SPFL will become less competitive, year on year as Celtic will always have the financial upperhand.

So it is a dilemma in choosing which path to follow and that dilemma, like last season will influence what we spend on players .

That in turn is influenced by FSR* that sets a spend limit on player squad including manager and coaching staff.

It levels off at 70% in next years licensing round for 25/26.

We will always be able to outspend R2ngers give our bigger football earnings income .

However in light of last summer”s spend of both clubs the question is will we?

The answer is “we’ll see”. :)

    * On FSR: Celtic played a role in its development and next to Fergus increasing stadium capacity, helping develop FSR with UEFA and clubs who spent only what they could afford is a domestic game changer in the same bracket.

he got up top with the paint crew, end to end painting was done is somethink like 12 years..

they then talked advances in technology, the paint itslef now has a lifespan of 18 years, and that analytics and specialist software monitors the rate of deteriation as in some areas are more vunerable than others

portillo said that must be woderful to know the paint lasts longer and specific areas to concentrate on, makes the job easier …………..

ays said the fella, we were able to pay off 4 men

  3. In slight mitigation, coefficient points gained in the Europa League competitions, have an equal value to those won in the Champions League. Clubs at our level would be expected to progress further in the EL than the CL giving them the potential of gaining more coefficient points.

No more newco, no more sevco. From now on it’s R2ngers. I like it. Says it all really.

As a primary school kid we had a day trip to Edinburgh which took in a visit to the Forth Bridge. The trains going across seemed miles up in the sky. Some years later, on the train to Kirkaldy and Dunfermline to see the bhoys, we would throw toilet rolls out of the window as we were crossing the bridge to watch them stream down to the water below. Since then I have walked up there with Scotrail engineers and also crossed it aboard the old steam train ‘Union of South Africa’ (renamed Osprey for apartheid reasons). Wonderful bridge.

Amongst other things it is proposing to broadcast games at 3pm on a Saturday from season 2024-25. NewCo is a radical idea, hoping to develop opportunities for the WSL and others.

NB I do not know if ‘NewCo’ has copyright the name, but if it has it just might stop Paul67 from continuing his obsesssion re our main rivals, one which perpetuates the myth of the same club. Might help fix that ‘narrative’.

    Euros Predictor Competition

We have 33 entrants already for our competition but we are aiming to double that before June 14th. I am suggesting a £20 entry fee but, based on feedback, I have decided to proceed with the same arrangements as we had for our SPFL tournament. We will pay out 50% of the money raised to charity immediately and I would suggest a 50/50 split between a) Sentinel Celts nominated Blood Cancer charity and b) John Fallon’s 12th Lion scheme to raise money for a school in Africa.

The other 50% will be paid to the Top 3 in the competition after the final is played to do with as they please. I will announce the actual prize money once we see what we’ve raised.

Now to pay an entry fee- these are the methods:-

    Superbru payments:-

By cash in person to CRC or SFTB if you see them

    By bank transfer to

    Account name: Walk With Shay

    Account number: 15326765

    Sort code: 80-22-60

    Bank: Bank of Scotland

Ref: Enter your name or blog moniker (so we can identify you and check off that you’ve paid!)

By paypal to walkwithshay@yahoo.com (please send as gift, so prize money pot is not diminished by paypal charges).

Feel free to pass on to friends etc; Those who have played before should be able to enter directly without fuss. New players might need to wait a day or two to get approval from me as the Competition Captain. As soon as you are in, you can start making predictions on the matches. Provided you do not click on the green lock beside your prediction, you can change your prediction several times on the way to kick off (but not afterwards). You can make all your predictions in advance if you are going on holiday or you can make each in the last hour before kick off.

Just join in and have a bit of fun. The money is going to a good cause.

  27. In the summer of 1928 he turned down an offer from Arsenal to become the highest paid footballer in Britain because he could not bear to leave Parkhead. It later turned out that the Celtic board were banking on Jimmy McGrory’s departure as a way of boosting the club’s bank account and so riled were they by his refusal of Arsenal’s offer (£10,000 transfer) that they secretly paid him less than his teammates for the rest of his career. When he later discovered this dastardly deed Jimmy McGrory simply said:

  31. Before Brendan Rodgers arrived we had a disastrous record at Hampden Park. In 15/16 we lost to Ross County and second tier opposition while struggling to win a one horse race in the league. We were embarrassed by Malmo and Molde amongst others. In 15′ we lost to Inverness, 13′ to Morton and in 14′ to Aberdeen at home in cup competitions.

Brendan changed everything, he set standards and shifted our mentality which has brought sustained success. A trophy laden decade has followed. Nobody understands this better than Neil

    Lennon.

Celtic quick news is becoming compare against Rangers quick news. Every other day brings another article drawing comparison with the club playing out of Ibrox. No articles place any praise or recognition on our elite manager.

Since Brendan arrived our systems and processes have not been able to match his level. Nicholson and McKay will come under pressure to deliver this summer. Rodgers got this one over the line despite the malaise created and left by the Lawwell axis. Lesser managers would have floundered under the the strain of such executive dysfunction.

Despite being treated appallingly by a large section of the support who abused him, Brendan has worked with humility and dedication to deliver a league and cup double.

Make no mistake about it, Brendan Rodgers is here because he wants to be here and because he loves Celtic.

I assume your coefficient monkeys jibe is just that Paul?

Harmless enough wind up I suppose.

R2ngers (yip, I’m persuaded) have amassed more coefficient points over the last five years than Celtic.

They’ve outscored us in four of those.

The only time they did worse was when we were both in the Champions League.

Our campaign under Ange was disappointing. I reckon we left at least two more points out there.

R2ngers’ was an embarrassment. They were shown up as being MILES off being a CL team.

Europa appears to be there level.

If they can thrive in that lower division, make some cash, pick up coefficient points for the nation?

    Good news for everyone.

BTW – R2ngers are not unique here.

15 years ago, ago Romania had two automatic qualifiers for the CL.

If you are wracking your brains trying to recall who the Romanian hi-flyers in the Champions League were?

Don’t bother. They routinely got skelped.

The situation only came about because three or four teams did well in the lesser competitions picking up loads of coefficient points along the way.

  34. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

As for speculating on R2ngers’ pathway to CL …. respectfully … is it worth it.

    We know the script.

They’ll trade in volume this summer as always.

The new recruits will be world-beaters.

Their opponents will be in crisis pre match either because of injuries or a sacked manager.

If they reach the CL they’ll have earned it.
