World’s most successful and coping with losing

114

Claims like ‘World’s most successful football club’ are meaningless to most football fans, as the vast majority are not attached to a club which can make such a boast.  We are more concerned about who is winning and the direction of travel at our club.

When Newco made a totem of this claim by plastering it all over their properties, they clearly never considered what would happen in the event the claim was no longer sustainable.  Losing it to a club in Serbia, or Egypt, would be awkward, but losing it to your nearest rivals?  Going from ‘World’s most successful’ to not even being Glasgow’s most successful overnight!  That’s going to sting.

The indignity of being forced to redecorate because Celtic have won more trophies than you is symptomatic of the mindset which caused Oldco to march off a cliff.  They could not deal with playing second fiddle to Celtic to the extent that they gambled ever-higher stakes instead of paying tax bills.

What we are talking about here is identity.  If your identity is intrinsically fixed to holding a position of primacy over others, no amount of red flags will stop you self-harming.  The need to be No. 1 is so great, you spend everything you can trying to achieve that status.

Every football fan wants their team to win, but if you cannot cope with losing without losing your sense of future survival, you should find another way to spend your weekends.

The problem Newco have now, is how to convince thousands of fans to climb off the summit and accept their place in the food chain is that of a cash cow for other clubs and a coefficient monkey for Celtic’s Champions League campaigns.

That message will not be evident this summer, but it’s coming to a stadium near you soon!

A wee question for any regular travellers to Ireland

Has anyone left their car at Cairnryan car park and walked on boat if so was there plenty spaces or is it rammed? Going 1st Aug

Been over twice recently with the car and there was plenty room for all passengers. Their lounges are big and comfortable. That is April and May though but I can’t see you having any problems in August.

Looking back at the goal, that wee barsteward Raskin really made a big effort to trip Bernardo and stop him from running towards the area. Well done to Paulo for not going down, it ended up being a great assist for Idah.

I can’t remember, was Raskin on a yellow card or did he receive a yellow for an obvious attempt to impede an opponent?

Also, the Dirty Diomande and Lundstrum red card offences happened in stoppage time when Celtic were leading.

At that stage I suspect the officials had had enough and just wanted full time and our of there.

Am not saying this is appropriate behaviour, rather, human nature.

  20. McPhail Bhoy on

How that obvious attempt to trip Bernardo was not a yellow card is beyond me. He could have done it after play stopped. Although to be fair to the ref many of his ‘fraternity’ would not have played advantage but would have stopped play. It shows how little faith we have in the refs that playing an advantage is considered (at least by me) as worthy of comment, it happens across the world every day!

Bigrailroadblues…I wanted to leave car at Cairnryan ( getting picked up ) and wondered if there were plenty spaces at Cairnryan to leave car

It says first come basis but has space for 300 ..I just wondered if anyone had left their car for 4 or 5 nights ?

  24. bigrailroadblues on

    Vinniethedog

Sorry, didn’t pick up on your query. There appeared to be lots of parking spaces on both my visits to Cairnryan. If you arrive an hour before sailing I’m sure you’ll get a space.
