‘I WOULD HAVE STAYED LONGER,’ ANGE OPENS UP ON CELTIC

ANGE POSTECOGLOU has admitted he would “have stayed longer” at Celtic – if he had been younger.

The 60-year-old Greek-Australian, who won five domestic honours in his two seasons at the club, also rejected any possibility of a return to Parkhead.

Postecoglou took over the Hoops in the summer of 2021 after the team had suffered their first trophyless season in 11 years.

The former Australia World Cup head coach transformed the club and steered the new-look side to the Premiership title and the League Cup in his debut campaign.

TITLE WINNER…Ange Postecoglou proudly waves the title silverware to the Celtic fans after the first of his two Premiership successes.

The following term saw Postecoglou complete the domestic treble and his last hurrah came on June 3 2023 when he guided Celtic to a 3-1 Scottish Cup Final triumph over Inverness Caley Thistle at Hampden.

A couple of days later, he was announced as the new team chief at Spurs.

Asked on the The Overlap‘s Stick To Football podcast about the possibility of a move back to Glasgow, Postecoglou answered: “I loved Celtic, it is a wonderful football club.

“If I were younger, I would have stayed longer, perhaps three or four years. I could have made progress with them in Europe.

“However, it had taken me a long time to get to this space and the opportunity to join Tottenham was too good.”

Postecoglou continued: “In terms of going back, I do NOT go back. That has not been my career.

“Whatever the next step is, it will be something new, something I can make an impact in and somewhere I can win things.

“This does not diminish the affection I have.

THE LAST HURRAH…Ange Postecoglou acknowledges the fans after leading Celtic to a 3-1 Scottish Cup Final success over Inverness Caley Thistle in June 2023 to seal the club’s eighth domestic clean sweep.

“It was a great experience for two years to be within a community that is so passionate about their football club. I was fortunate that we had success.

“I loved every minute and look back on it fondly.”

The popular gaffer, who was sacked by the London club last season after winning the Europa League and then had a whirlwind stay at Nottingham Forest, added: “It is important with all these things that I made a great decision when I joined Tottenham, but I will not go back.

“That is not how my career has played out.”
