Write your own headlines as Celtic work below radar

Peter Lawwell told Sky Sports he’ll not be rushed into making an appointment.  Football goes on holiday for the next few weeks as players, managers and (under normal circumstances) CEOs kick back before minds turn to preseason and transfers.  Even if Celtic appoint a manager tomorrow, his plans for next season will progress little in the immediate future, but the task is being addressed with some urgency.

The best insight I can offer is that the bookies and media know Sweet Fanny Ally about what is going on.  Know that when Celtic start to talk to a candidate, the first thing they will insist on is radio silence, so if the aspiring manager is talking to a jouno, chances are he’s not talking to Celtic.  The club will attempt to do as much work below radar as possible, but between now and the day of an appointment, newspapers will splash their latest ‘favourite’ to get the job over their covers in an attempt to get you buy.  You’d be better picking your own candidates and writing your own headlines.

I’m going to wallow a bit in European glory tonight.  All those photos of the Lions back in Lisbon has been inspiring.  What great man, what a great history they’ve given us.

    Just turned on the ole play off final and see that whilst there have been no goals yet, Derby are a man to the good. I have a feeling that both Scotland and England will have a “Rangers” in their respective Championships next season.

    This year they spent about 30 million euros, having received about double that for Falcao going to Monaco.

     

     

    On his achievements this season, they too have an excellent manager.

     

     

    However, after willing them so much to lose that 1974 final to Bayern, I can’t say I hope they win the trophy they tried to cheat their way to that year at our expense.

     

     

    I just repeat, I hope it’s a great game for the watching Lions.

    Celtic were the first British team to win the European Cup. And they did it the first year they were in it.

     

     

    However, they were not the first British team to try to win it. Here is a list of English and Scottish teams who had the opportunity to win the European Cup before Celtic, but failed.

    Few points being made about just being in the CL for the ‘qualification’ money – high time the Board applied a bit more investment in order to progress the Team further in Europe.

     

     

    The CL is not just about competing – there’s a substantial element of ‘elite’ representation and history associated with the competition – therefore Celtic should always target participation (no matter the financial or seeding handicaps) on an annual basis.

     

     

    Tonight’s CL Final is billed as the first between 2 clubs from the same city – Fact! However we should never lose sight of the historical facts surrounding our Club’s role in the competition:

     

     

    • 1st Club to win the EC with 11 players from their own country (Glasgow & District Select).

     

    • 1st non-Latin side to win the EC.

     

    • 1st Club to win the current EC trophy.

     

    • Only one of 22 Clubs to win the trophy over the 58 years the competition has been in existence and only one of 20 to feature in 2 or more finals.

     

    • And for good measure – last season’s Group Stage was the 1st time 4 previous winners had come together in the head-to-head mini league sections.

     

     

    Today’s seeding format makes it extremely difficult for Celtic to progress beyond qualifying for the competition proper (last 32). In terms of the top 32 seedings – we are currently ranked 62 (36.813) – 20 places below Liverpool (58.949).

     

     

    If we want to close that gap – we would effectively need to reach the last 16 of the Europa League (minimum) for the next 2 seasons to accumulate sufficient coefficient points to avoid the qualifying rounds. Even if we only finished 3rd in the CL Group – the additional round pre-Christmas would gain us sufficient points to move up the table thus eliminating one qualifying round.

     

     

    Note: 2 Pot 1 team 2014-15 CL places will go to the semi-finalist and runner-up in this year’s Europa competition while the winner will get an automatic Pot 3 place.

     

     

    The League is there for the taking these next 3 years – some of the accumulated bank cash reserve needs to be channelled into European aspirations. Maybe a pro-active European policy might see an upsurge in season ticket sales and a halt in falling attendances. Won’t hold my breathe!
