Write your own headlines as Celtic work below radar

1442

Peter Lawwell told Sky Sports he’ll not be rushed into making an appointment.  Football goes on holiday for the next few weeks as players, managers and (under normal circumstances) CEOs kick back before minds turn to preseason and transfers.  Even if Celtic appoint a manager tomorrow, his plans for next season will progress little in the immediate future, but the task is being addressed with some urgency.

The best insight I can offer is that the bookies and media know Sweet Fanny Ally about what is going on.  Know that when Celtic start to talk to a candidate, the first thing they will insist on is radio silence, so if the aspiring manager is talking to a jouno, chances are he’s not talking to Celtic.  The club will attempt to do as much work below radar as possible, but between now and the day of an appointment, newspapers will splash their latest ‘favourite’ to get the job over their covers in an attempt to get you buy.  You’d be better picking your own candidates and writing your own headlines.

I’m going to wallow a bit in European glory tonight.  All those photos of the Lions back in Lisbon has been inspiring.  What great man, what a great history they’ve given us.

News straight from the ole Daily Retard

“Rumours of a rift in the Celtic camp on the eve of the big game. Sources close to Celtic suggests that Big Jock is off either way, due to lack of funds for next years European Cup challenge.”

Typical. Big Jock jumped ship at Dunfermline and then Hibs before he was found out. Don’t think he will amount to much at CP anyway!

Probably will given they have the most overrated manager in history

Currently 30 places below Liverpool – though the gap will narrow next year when their CL title drops off the 5 year cumulative coefficient total.

  9. Think England are playing tonight and I here that the Bhoys have been invited round to a Scottish chaps house ( Brodie Lennox , I hear.)

This should be a relaxing evening for the Bhoys on the eve of the European cup final.

( no way will Neilly Mochan take them a short cut on the way back, climbing fences and dodgy dirt tracks full of pot holes. No way would an injury be risked at this late stage!)

  10. Spurs did win the Euro Cupwinners cup before we won the biggie.

Was it Althletico they beat in the final??

  11. Phyllis Dietrichson on

Praecepta – Liverpool won the Cup 9 years ago then reached the final 7 years ago. Surely those achievements have dropped off their co-efficient?

The following got to a final before us and failed to win:

    Fiorentina

    Eintracht Frankfurt

The following got to a final after us and failed to win:

Bamboo – I was suggesting Spurs must have had the chance to win Big Cup as they won the Double in the early 60s.

  14. Praecepta

Now that is an idea that makes much more sense than stockpiling for TRFC winning promotion to the top tier.

A realistic aim for me is that Celtic should have a squad of a quality that puts us in Europe after Xmas.

The quality to win the SPL can be less than it currently is but that makes the above aim less likely.

The converse is that you aim to have an After Xmas quality then you make the SPFL less competitive, but that should not mean less entertaining. If the entertainment level is high, (and I watched some entertaining but not competitive games this season) AND European competition after Xmas is made possible then I think supporters will buy into that as a realistic and hopeful vision.

I read earlier someone saying they missed that jubilation or depression feeling that came with the news of Rangers results. It’s like a drug and it has an attraction for some folk because that is what they are used to.

The entertainment rests solely on the football played. No amount of singing or dancing or grand avenues will compensate for poor football.

However get the football right and all the add ons added to the match day experience can wean folk off the up and downers that Rangers brought to the party.

The question then is one of finance. Just how much will it cost to produce an After Xmas squad?

Factor in x fer income if we produce a gem each season and if we are in the CL rather than EL two on a trot then use that to ensure we stay at that consistent level.

Throw those factors into the mix and just how much does our playing wage bill have to be to make After Xmas a sustainable policy.

Now if the Board are not thinking on those lines instead of stockpiling for anything then I want PL’s job.

On the other hand if the above is a reasonable assessment of a viable policy then PL/ Celtic need to tell articulate it better and give the support some ball park estimate of the cost v benefits v risk to get buy in.

Much of the criticism arises from ignorance in the sense of not knowing the information that forms Celtic’s policy, but if that were more evident it would leave little room for smsm to sow doubt in minds replete with the facts.

The method of calculation only changed 4/5 years ago – so last coefficient for year 09/10 is showing as: 24.585.

They will lose that this year from their total – unless they match it by getting to approx semi-final stages. Of course there is the b@ggeration factor where an English team wins either the CL or Europa and like Man City this year end up gaining circa 23 points.

Looking forward to the final, has to be RM for me,

    best option.

  21. Just remembered that a couple of my friends flying out tomorrow by plane have asked me to arrange a quick trip to Fatima for them. Off out to organize two taxis and tomorrow my friend and I will collect them at the airport. Should be touch and go if we can get there and back in time for the game.

Thank you. Celebrations tomorrow at the stadium after our game. Lech Poznan draw the game today and we are the champions three games before the end. I hope we don’t meet too early.

In stead of crunching numbers on the balance sheets to decide on player spend – the accountants at CP should be doing similar with the UEFA coefficient tables.

CL example: Juve ko’d us at last 16 stage and were ko’d next round = 25.883pts.

This year finished 3rd and got ko’d in Europa semis = 25.883pts (and will be a Pot 2 seed).

    Teams currently above us that will plummet this time next year include;

    Stuttgart

    Bordeaux

    Fiorentina

    Fulham

    W. Bremmen

    Standard Liege

    Next year;

    Braga

    Twente

    Copenhagen

    Roma

Note: always assuming the above teams don’t reach another final.

Meantime – we get rid of our 2 years worst points tally in our current total.

Does anyone happen to know if it’s possible to buy a DVD of the 1967 final in colour?

  25. Spurs were in the european cup semi in 61-62 losing to (the winners?)Benfica 4-3 on aggregate.

  26. Auldheid,

In CQN terms I would class myself as a Happy Clapper. I love Celtic and I appreciate the efforts that folk make in order that our great Club can succeed.

I would say though, that prior to having an after-Christmas-objective, I would have liked to have seen an always-always-qualify objective. Last summer suggests that we don’t really have that.

When rangers disappeared, it was clear to me, that what we needed to do was to qualify for 4 UCL’s in a row…..use that money wisely to ensure the team got a little stronger every year. THEN move on to an after=Christmas objective.

Sadly, I don’t see a Celtic that is determined to get to that Group stage. I see a Celtic that HOPES to get there, and if it gets there, will spend a wee bit of money.

To me, it is utter madness to gamble like we have. If we are going to sell 12 million pounds worth of players, we should be able to buy 8 million worth to replace them. And if so, half of this should go into making sure we qualify.

The only risk is that if we don’t qualify, we will only have made 8 million pounds profit on trading players. That 4 million spent won’t be wasted, it will still be there, on the park, to help us qualify next year.

This wait and see attitude is far to conservative. Whether we like it or not, we will be selling good players for good money every year. Any quality player that we pick up on a four year contract will not sign an extension and will almost certainly be sold after year two.

So, I’d prefer an after-august objective before we get to an after-christmas one.

    Hail hail,

    Ronnie
