Write your own headlines as Celtic work below radar

1442

Peter Lawwell told Sky Sports he’ll not be rushed into making an appointment.  Football goes on holiday for the next few weeks as players, managers and (under normal circumstances) CEOs kick back before minds turn to preseason and transfers.  Even if Celtic appoint a manager tomorrow, his plans for next season will progress little in the immediate future, but the task is being addressed with some urgency.

The best insight I can offer is that the bookies and media know Sweet Fanny Ally about what is going on.  Know that when Celtic start to talk to a candidate, the first thing they will insist on is radio silence, so if the aspiring manager is talking to a jouno, chances are he’s not talking to Celtic.  The club will attempt to do as much work below radar as possible, but between now and the day of an appointment, newspapers will splash their latest ‘favourite’ to get the job over their covers in an attempt to get you buy.  You’d be better picking your own candidates and writing your own headlines.

I’m going to wallow a bit in European glory tonight.  All those photos of the Lions back in Lisbon has been inspiring.  What great man, what a great history they’ve given us.

    Oops sorry. My omission.

Tottenham Hotspur were indeed another British team who had the chance to win the European Cup before Celtic.

But like all the rest, they didnae!

I come across the occasional hun who says “Aye, but winning the European Cup back then was easy”.

Its good to point out how many British teams couldn’t do the easy bit.

Its also good to point out the two teams who have been in the European Cup the most times without being able to win it. Namely rangers and lingfield.

Last season after 10 minutes into Jackie’s return to Celtic Park with Dundee United , it was fairly obvious that he had his team wide-open and that they would indeed get trounced. You see that from the Arabs great wins one week , followed by a defeat against inferior opposition.

In my book, Jackie would have us totally on the front foot and the season would pan-out much the same as Barnes and Mowbray, which was sadly predictable at the time.

Jackie is too wet behind the ears tactically to be trusted with Celtic at the moment.

I love it when I hear huns trying to point out how easy it was to win the European Cup or how football is faster now.Skill wins games. You can make a player fitter but you can’t install quality which isn’t there.

My usual question to those huns: Brazil of the 70 World Cup are regarded the greatest team ever. They outplayed an Italy side made up mostly from the Inter side which Celtic outplayed in the heat of a Lisbon.

Does this mean the Celtic side of 67 are comparable to the greatest side that ever played football?

I also remember Bertie Aulds reply when the Daily Ranger had a player v player point system between the Rangers team of 93 and the Lisbon Lions(Rangers had better players apparently).”It would be a close game but remember, some of us are in our 60’s now.”

Atletico Madrid thug breaks his silence on Celtic shame game 40 years on: I should have been jailed

    22 May 2014 08:05 AM

    By John Gardner

ARGENTINE defender Ruben Diaz saw red for a wild assault on the late Jimmy Johnstone in 1974. Now 68, he has finally come clean.

ATLETICO MADRID legend Ruben Diaz has finally broken his silence on a night of shame against Celtic 40 years ago – and admitted he deserved to be jailed for his tackles.

    The Spanish champions
face city rivals Real Madrid in Saturday’s Champions League Final in Portugal.

They will be watched by the Lisbon Lions for the first final to take place in the city since Celtic’s 1967 triumph.

But it was in 1974 when Atletico beat Celtic in a shameful semi-final clash – where three players from the Spanish club were sent off in a 0-0 draw in Glasgow, before a 2-0 win the return.

Argentine defender Diaz saw red for a wild assault on the late Jimmy Johnstone in the Parkhead clash and was banned for the Final against Bayern Munich – which Atletico lost after a replay. But now 68, Diaz has finally come clean.

He said: “I cursed myself for years about the tackles but I can’t change anything. I meant no malice, I did it for the team, but it stopped me playing in the Final.

“But those tackles were worthy of more than a red card – I should have been locked up in jail!”

Another Atletico star who was sent off that night, Ruben Ayala, also admitted he’d crossed the line.

He said: “I got a three-match ban. We knew we’d acted poorly but we still got a draw at Celtic Park.”

Lisbon Lions skipper Billy McNeill said: “Real were the aristocrats of Europe, Atletico the scum. 40 years on, just mentioning them fills me with revulsion.”

At the last 16 we all threw in a tenner and picked the names oot a hat.

I wasn’t there and some “muppet” picked Athletico for me.I still remember the night in CP and agree wholeheartedly with big Billy’s description of them.

I’m still torn between the $160 bucks and the scum winning the big yin.

    HH bro

  14. This is all starting to look a bit unplanned, much to my angst… We saw the problems we had in qualifiers last year, and that was with a manager in place. This year we won’t even be at CP for most of them…

In terms of runners and riders, for what its worth my thoughts..

Moyes (“Moysie”). A year a go, the coup of all coups. Now? Meh, not so much… Nevertheless, Moyes will appeal to DD’s sense of a “big name” (plus his love of all things ManU). It could be a decent move for Davie too: allowing him a chance to actually win a trophy, plus rebuild his reputation a bit. If he did become our manager and was successful, the press would have him leaving every week. Much depends on what signals he is getting from EPL teams. If the likes of Spurs are keen, he will stay in England. If it’s West Ham, we could tempt him.

McNamara (“Jackie”). Some promising signs as DU manager, but really no more than that. His team were comprehensively out-thought by StJ last week, and have lost as many games as they’ve won this year. Looks like he is a fan of attacking football, which is a plus. Can’t rule him out because he wold be a cheap option. And controllable by PL. On the downside, his da’ is a communist.

Owen “Barclays Premier League” Coyle. Middling manager. A Tim, allegedly, but in previously turning the job down has blackened his name with the majority of fans. Career increasingly punctured by sackings and periods of unemployment, he would now jump at the job if offered it.

Henrik. No nickname required. Beyond legend. The greatest player ever to play in Scotland and the main reason Arsenal still haven’t won the CL. However, if he hadn’t played for us, would we even consider him, given his management record so far? Can see the logic from a commercial point of view, but this appointment could well end in tears…

Keane (“Keano”). Certified psychopath. Deigned to play for us at the fag end of his career. Definite Tim, tremendous character, but – the evidence suggests – an absolutely rubbish manager. Can’t be ruled out because of DD’s whims…

Steve “Clarkie” Clarke. The dark horse. Should have played for us, tremendous CV as assistant manager and seemed to be unlucky at WBA. Could fit into a slightly different managerial structure where PL has more power. Therefore an attractive choice I suspect….

Fair play to the daily ranger.

Obviously rangers in 93 had better players than Celtic in ’67.

    Scott Nisbett or Jimmy Johnstone.

    Nae contest really.

    Some thoughts…

    1) I reckon we have about 2 weeks to get a new manager. If it takes much longer than that, then we may impact on CL qualification

    2) Our board tell us they succession plan. So presumably they already have a process and a “long-list” , which could quickly become a short list.

    3) The idea of recruiting a relative unknown who turns out to be a Simeone or a Pochettino, is very appealing, but, statistically you are more likely to get a LeGuen or Barnes.

    4) Get a process, and profile of must have and like to have skills and find a guy who is best fit.

    5) As we have little football expertise on our board, use expert help from friends of our club – MON, WGS , and NL.

    6) Avoid guys who apply via the press – Coyle, Garcia etc.

Personally without having delved into their history, I would be happy with McKay or McLaren, or possibly Clarke ( although, I am not sure if he would bond with the fans…accepting he is a Celtic fan), and as outsiders Di Matteo, Hoddle or Laudrup.

Only the Daily Hun could have given a team that didn’t win the cup or even reach the final more points than the Lisbon Lions.Sorry,I’m paranoid again.

The daily ranger would have given the huns team who got papped oot the Anglo Scottish cup by third division Chesterfield mair points than The Lisbon Lions.

  25. Was at the Athletico semi final and was shocked as most Celtic fans were that night. None of us had seen such a planned and systematic assay on our team.

We came away thinking they will be thrown out of the tournament.

    We should have known better.

So can I favour Athletico tonight?

  27. I don’t like Atletico because of their past dealings with us. I’m also suspicious of them. They don’t seem to have many black players and their fans have been done for racism. Anybody know if this is a true reflection of them?

    b2k,

they’ve had many black players. They probably have a few racist fans as do most clubs. Most Atleti fans are from working class areas of Madrid. That’s not to say they are a squeaky clean club. They have had their fair share of nutters involved, none more so than Jesus Gil. Most Spanish clubs have normal fans as the majority but many have a minority of thugs.
