Xenophobia trumps racism for Brits at Euros

738

All week I’ve been telling myself that it is a healthy thing that discriminatory chanting has come under the spotlight prior to Euro 2012.  The world needs to focus on those who are unable to find an outlet for their testosterone without picking on the vulnerable.

We know all about discriminatory chanting in Scotland, you could say, we’re up to our knees in it, so I’ve been slightly uncomfortable at the tone to some of the reporting about Poland and Ukraine.  It feels a bit like we’ve decided, ‘They have it too, let’s talk about them.  Not us’.  When I say “us”, I don’t mean you, of course.

Fair enough, I thought, let’s bring this issue out, but at the start of the second half between Netherlands and Denmark when BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce reported “We haven’t heard any racist comments here today.  Not when the young, black, Dutch left back got the ball, or at any other time” I figured this is more about xenophobia than racism.  Xenophobia about Eastern Europe.

We’re no wiser about how to deal with our testosterone-fuelled under-achievers with a purpose to find than anyone else.  In fact, we’re worse for allowing our intellectuals to indulge in the last refuge of the scoundrel.

My money is on the Polish and Ukrainian fans emerging from this tournament with a better reputation than some of their Western European counterparts.

SFA in ‘get it right up’ Celtic email controversy

    Posted on 11 April, 2011 by Paul67

Some days ago I was pointed in the direction of the copy of an email posted online, apparently from Scottish FA council member, David Dowling, sent to what looks like SFA colleagues, including president George Peat and vice president, Campbell Ogilvie, multi-committee member, Findlay Noble, as well as a wide range of non-SFA contacts, discussing Bobo Balde’s Celtic contract.

Fifa require clubs to submit a copy of all players’ contracts with their domestic association. The email contains details of Bobo’s financial remuneration during his final three years at Celtic, a period during which he played very little football. The email explains what Bobo cost Celtic per game and per minute each season, both inordinately high figures, and finishes with the sentiment:

“ahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha go on yerself bobo – get it right up them”

David Dowling and Findlay Noble are both on the SFA Disciplinary Committee and Appeals Committee. George Peat’s period as SFA president is due to end this summer when Campbell Ogilvie is expected to take over from him.

I have decided not to provide a link to the version which details confidential financial information, or the various email addresses involved, but you can see a link to a copy of the email with all the sensitive data blocked here.

Sentiment like this is, of course, wholly unacceptable. Clubs must have faith that confidential contract information, submitted to the SFA, does not become the subject of casual gossip or mocking.

The profane “get it right up them” sentiment being bandied around is indefensible. It is claimed the email was sent at the end of Bobo’s contact in the summer of 2009, so predates Celtic’s recent hardening attitude about their treatment by the SFA, but explains the context of the club’s action.

This season has already seen the Celtic manager lied to by referee Dougie McDonald, the Referees’ Committee subsequently admonish McDonald, while the SFA have tried to revision their own rules to further punish Neil Lennon. A pattern of behaviour is emerging.

Celtic fans have long suspected a hostile attitude existed at the SFA towards their club. We appear to be at a watershed time with abundant evidence of this hostility. If this email proves accurate, future accusations of ‘paranoia’ will be rebuked by evidence.

I find RCO ‘s position breathtakingly arrogant

It beggars belief …. Arrogance overtakes self respect

  3. When you get to the end of the road and you’ve been caught bang to rights all you have left is a brazen defiance, the idea of contrition or some semblance of humility is beyond the peepul…

Campbell will get his and still believe he has done no wrong, the fact that Regan is trying to surf the Ogilvie wave is deeply disturbing for the future of football in Scotland.

The game needs a whole new unified body to run the game fairly…

    Mon The Ireland…

  4. It would be beyond hilarious if the SFA, instigated by Campbell, had an EBT scheme going too.

  8. RCO knows he is in the wrong and that he should go but he is displaying the breathtaking arrogance and ‘brassneckery’ of the huns by refusing to do so. Like them he awaits someone to finally push him over the edge.

  9. Just reading Ogilve’s interview there.

Secretary in any organisation is privvy to pretty much everything. think General Secretary in Unions, Secretary of State……

The appointed Secretary (rather than the Miss Moneypenny typing up letters – and even she or he sees a helluva lot and hears a helluva lot more than many more senior members of staff in an organisation) is a huge position of trust in any organisation. The clue is in the name – lets analyse it:

    SECRET – ary.

    You getting this?

Ogilve is being economical with the truth. He should be gone. Just like I am about to be gone….

    Laters

  10. Good morning CQNers,

In view of Ogilvie’s protestations about his knowledge of Ranger’s EBT’s the following snippet is from -The SFA Judicial Panel Verdict on Rangers is interesting…..

Reference is frequently made to the judgment of Lord Denning in Bolton Engineering) Co. v. Graham[1957] 1QB 159. He said ” A company may in many ways be likened to a human body. It has a brain and nerve centre which controls what it does. It also has hands which hold the tools and act in accordance with directions from the centre. Some of the people in the company are mere servants and agents who are nothing more than hands to do the work and cannot be said to represent the mind or will. Others are directors and managers who represent the directing mind and will of the company, and control what it does. The state of mind of these managers is the state of mind of the company and is treated by the law as such.”

This surely leaves the SFA open to even more ridicule by allowing Ogilvie to continue in position if the SFA Judicial Panel used it in their deliberations in finding Rangers guilty in connection with Whyte’s mismanagement.

  11. Parody (?) of the interview with old slippery shoulders…

Q: Did you see the BBC documentary on Rangers, The Men Who Sold The Jerseys?

A: I was in the room looking at the TV, and I can confirm that te programme was on, but it was not my responsibility to actually listen. My dog was responsible for that. They have good hearing dogs. He received is dog treats as EBT’s.

Q: A striking issue to come out of that was an alleged payment to Graeme Souness. Were you surprised by that?

A: Never heard of the woman. Who is she?

Q: Can you see there being an issue with you being SFA president at a time when there is an ongoing SPL investigation into non-disclosure of payments at Rangers that you are directly linked to? You were a director and the secretary who signed off the accounts in November 2001. At that time the EBT scheme was in operation and players were receiving payments that weren’t in their contracts.

    A: No

Q: Did you never see there could be a potential conflict using EBTs to pay footballers?

A: Conflict? That was Tony Blair’s responsibility.

Q: But you signed off the accounts…

A: So?. It was not me it was my pen. Well to clarify, it was a pen which belonged to rangers.

Q: Without the knowledge of what was in these accounts? Was that remiss of you?

A: Responsibility for pens and pencils rested fairly and squarely with a junior administrator. I have nothing to do with anything created by these writing tools.

Q: They were mentioned as a total. But then nothing is given individually, with total salary costs and so on. Wouldn’t there be an expectation secretaries would normally involve themselves in contracts?

A: Look, I was just a secretary, I just made the tea and answered the phone. Are you stupid or what?

Q: As a director and secretary you had no knowledge of the way players were paid?

    A: Correctamundo.

Q: Was there anything you saw in the [BBC] programme that would change your mind about how EBTs operated?

A: I told you, I watched the programme, but did not listen. Speak to my dog.

Q: As secretary you would have registered the contracts with the appropriate football bodies presumably?

A: Don’t be stupid.Bodies were the responsibility of the physio and medical team.

    Q: Who was responsible?

    A: My Dog?

Q: At what time did you become aware EBTs were going to become a problem?

A: When those eejist on CQN and RTC started spreading all the 99% crap.

Q: No suggestion of any wrongdoing on your part, but do you not feel your stewardship there is embarrassing or tainted? Do you not look back and think “I was there through all this”?

A: I was not or never have been employed a a steward.

Q: Do you feel negligence on your part, there is a perception of negligence…

A: I don’t know the difference between perception and reality.

Q: Did you ever think about stepping down until the investigation is over?

    A: I don’t like line dancing.

Q: Has it changed the way you view your time at Rangers?

A: Yes. I should have got more money from EBT’s. Did you see how much some of the other muppets got? Bang out of order man.

Q: How damaged do you feel by your association with that period at Rangers?

A: I’m tickety boo. Damage limitation is the responsibility of the Scottish press. That’s why you are here.

Q: What kind of reaction have you had from the rank and file of the clubs?

A: No worries there, they are all keeking their breeks. I’m untouchable.

Q: If Rangers become a newco, the decision has to be taken whether they will be allowed in the SPL or start again in the SFL. Some Rangers supporters think they should take their medicine and start at the Third Division. Do you think it should be a footballing decision or financial decision?

A: Shut up. What’s football got to do with i anyway? The Big Hoose must stay open. Ranger will never die. We arra peepil and we run the show. OK.

Q: Do you really think that?

A: I don’t like you…… What School did you go to?

The evidence of Campbell Ogilvie with regard to his time as a Director of Rangers is strikingly similar to that of another former Director of that club, the late David Hope.

In his book “Law Life and Laughter”, former Sheriff, Irvine Smith, QC, quotes from his judgement on the damages claim against Rangers for victims of the Ibrox Disaster. He says more or less that Hope was Hopeless and other directors, managers, and the club records, no better.

    QUOTE:

“I found the whole evidence in support of the Rangers version unimpressive in the extreme. Mr Hope, in evidence, vacillated among his being unable to recollect such a meeting, his denying any such meeting, his possibly of having the dates wrong, being mistaken, admitting that he could have forgotten, stating that if he had attended such a meeting he would certainly have recalled it, and so on. There was hardly any variation on the theme of equivocation – and on that theme there are many variations – to which he did not resort. The evidence here is such that it had to be read to be believed.

Mr Thornton, the Assistant Manager for Rangers, who Mr Gow said was there though he took no part, similarly in giving evidence, vacillated as to whether he was at such a meeting or whether he simply could not recall having been at such a meeting……………

Owing to the unsatisfactory nature of the evidence for the defenders on this, and on other matters, the minutes of their board meetings had a particular significance. If the verbal testimony of the defenders’ witnesses, however, revealed little, their written records, produced in court, revealed even less. And if the extracts from the records produced in this case were what they purported to be, rarely can an organisation of the size and significance of Rangers Football Club have succeeded in conducting their busi¬ness with records so sparse, so carelessly kept, so inaccurately written up – if indeed ‘inaccuracy’ is not too mild a word to describe one particular minute – and so indifferently stored.”

  17. Por Cierto

I think he probably does but he and his club have had so much protection over the years the believe they can get away with anything. No punishment for a sectarian signing policy that he was part of and they make him President of the SFA, says it all really.

Cheers mate, another book on the list to buy. Roman Empire, early America, the British Empire, Spanish Civil War, Vietnam, etc. etc. I love history, all history, full stop but I’ll never live long enough to get thru’ it all. In preference Irish history takes second place to Scottish history though. I just wish there were more books on Scotland. I remember having a wee talk with Pablo about three years ago that what I wanted for Christmas was a full set of Nigel Tranter’s books in hardback and he going on to relate how he was passing the man’s house and decided to stop and say ‘hello’.

My favourite history book of them all is ‘The Story of a Nation’ (Scotland) by Magnus Magnusson.

Also, Charlie George was reported in The Derby Telegraph as having hit the post with a 20 yard shit.
