Xenophobia trumps racism for Brits at Euros

738

All week I’ve been telling myself that it is a healthy thing that discriminatory chanting has come under the spotlight prior to Euro 2012.  The world needs to focus on those who are unable to find an outlet for their testosterone without picking on the vulnerable.

We know all about discriminatory chanting in Scotland, you could say, we’re up to our knees in it, so I’ve been slightly uncomfortable at the tone to some of the reporting about Poland and Ukraine.  It feels a bit like we’ve decided, ‘They have it too, let’s talk about them.  Not us’.  When I say “us”, I don’t mean you, of course.

Fair enough, I thought, let’s bring this issue out, but at the start of the second half between Netherlands and Denmark when BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce reported “We haven’t heard any racist comments here today.  Not when the young, black, Dutch left back got the ball, or at any other time” I figured this is more about xenophobia than racism.  Xenophobia about Eastern Europe.

We’re no wiser about how to deal with our testosterone-fuelled under-achievers with a purpose to find than anyone else.  In fact, we’re worse for allowing our intellectuals to indulge in the last refuge of the scoundrel.

My money is on the Polish and Ukrainian fans emerging from this tournament with a better reputation than some of their Western European counterparts.

  1. !!Bada Bing!! at the start of the season coming home after the games and being behind the huns by so many points the only thing that cheered me up was watching barca and messi play.and again tonight watching the arg braz game that guy is the worlds best no doubt.

  2. Fortunes Favour Mibbes no i dont post under any other name.

as for the boys of the old brigade well being in england and singing a song about the boyos would get us bad press but i understand all the meaning of it but as u say they dont that is the difference and do we really need to sing it when we have a library of songs to sing about out team??

    SOAL,

Ah, Rainy Night in Soho. Actually my favourite SMcG one as well.

I reckon it’s a love song for the drink, which I can very much relate to !

If you don’t mind I’ll say a bit and let you have a response but will end it there, as it’s a debate that rages on here all the time.

There’s nothing wrong with the song, in fact, it’s a good song. It’s important to the political values of a large part of our support. There is a an argument that it would be better manners not to sing it, but there’s an equally powerful (or more powerful imo) argument for singing it, as it refers to a part of UK history that the UK still refuses to talk about or accept, ie. denial of the wrongs of the British Empire. No country can progress until it faces it’s criminal past – every country has one.

I think you’ve come under immediate attack here due to jumping into that debate and combining it with a poverty of punctuation. I won’t pre-judge you though :)

Hope I don’t offend you here, but, er, hadn’t heard that song before, and am kind of hoping not to again ! Bit commercial and bland! What were they thinking?? Or am I missing something on hearin it for first time??

    Much prefer this one :))

  6. We are a football club, we are not a political oragnisation. We support our team on the pitch and anywhere we play why do we need to carry on singing songs that you and i know give us bad press. The last ten mins of the norwich game shows us how our fans can be regarded as the best in the world.Boys of the old brigade is a song that should not be sung anywhere near a footabll ground as i have two sons aged 11 and 9 who i take to all the games and away games and don’t want them involved in any of this singing.

  7. I lived in England for fifteen years or so. Every one of those years I played football for one team or another. I went to so many games, as a spectator, at different grounds from Hereford to West Ham, Leeds to Liverpool. I’ve spoken with thousands upon thousands of English folks and count many as my friends.

Almost to a man/woman they understood the fundamental problems associated with Ireland and the need for a republican movement within that country. They understand the motivation and passion we have for our songs, although not all of them agree with the sentiments none of them ever admitted to being offended by them; all with the exception of one… the Michael Fagan Song. They considered that song to be classless and crass.

I’m sure there are some English folk who would deny the Irish equal rights and the right to celebrate their culture, but in my time I never met or talked to any. To sum up the English attitude to Ireland and her songs… apathetic.

I’d rather sing than riot; Debate than destroy; buy my round and keep the Hector sweet as opposed swindle the dwindling comforts of my Queen.

You’re always out to offend me it would seem :-)))

It is a bit commercial but the lyrics are excellent. Incredible that a man can come up with the words to Rainy Night but laso write this…..

    …genius.

  9. Boa noite,

…….just in from the pub here in rainy Rio. When Messi did this ( Messi’s third today against Brasil ) I couldn’t help myself and stood up in the pub and applauded.

Cue akward silence. Until (bless him) the wee waiter had the presence of mind to say “It’s OK. He’s Scottish. He’s Celtic” Cue a gale of relieved laughter from the assembled crowd and much discussion about why it’s a pity he’s not Brasilian.

    Thank you Celtic (again)….

    Boa noite

    HT,

I actually thought you were noising me up with that musak.

You obviously have a soppy side – no harm in that mind, I’ve shed a few tears at the pottery scene in Ghost myself :))

  11. The bould Hector's bhoys..... Tá ár lá anois on

    Anyone help…..

What exactly are ” Traditions” with respect to Darnel[IA]…?

  12. Fortunes Favour Mibbes on

    Kit,

Spent a lot of time travelling to Engerlund myself in the past 8 years, all over.

Mostly decent people imo who are done a disservice by the meeja, and a have a far better understanding of things than the meeja would have the rest of Europe believe.

The UK meeja needs to go, pronto.

    The bould Hector’s bhoys

:)) A good question that more of us should be askin !

Tradition equals the handing down of culture through generations.

Mibbes we should be asking, what is that culture…

  14. Sixteen roads to Golgotha on

The Irish of Glasgow have survived despite all the odds, and what odds they were. The entire might the Scottish Establishment was brought to bear upon a fierce people, and instead of destroying them, it forged a community that could never be broken.

It is a good song but the guy who put the video together rather exaggerated the number of Australians killed in that campaign. If he had done just a little research he would see that more French died than Ausies, not to mention the number of British casualties.

But that aside the song is good.

  16. When i was young i used to sing these songs when there wasn’t such a commotion about the songs. Now i have a family and the times we are in i don’t sing in public but i don’t shy away from sing the songs at ant nights in my local AOH listening to a good band.

Agreed, I never had a problem, got called a PJ a few times but I’ve been called worse and survived. The English are at heart a good folk. They do have a problem with a very small minority of slugs but what country in the world doesn’t.

Their press, like ours, do have an awful lot to answer for.

Essentially, you’re saying that the deceits set forth to stir among the hearts of those who would and indeed should know better is more important than your own principles, beliefs and of course that which tugs at your own heart. Your very convictions, cast aside for nary the sake of a column inch.

    Is this correct?

You’re entitled to your opinion mate and if you decide that you don’t want your young sons hearing these songs then that is your right.

I have two daughters who have no interest in football but they can sing this from start to finish…

It did lead me to compare Scotia attititudes….for me it was further proof we’re regressing here. But that’s another debate…….

It’s understandable when the DR has been the most popular rag here and been under the control of Minty and Operation Hun Rescue.
