Year of the diddy teams stalking Celtic

332

One or two of us mocked another team for struggling against Second and Third division sides this season.  All good sporting fun but from the lofty heights of the Champions League knockout stages you need to make sure you can overcome a team who are treading water in the third tier of Scottish football.

Arbroath were good value for their draw at Celtic Park earlier this month.  It would be wrong to say their late equaliser was coming, as they never threatened during the previous 86 minutes, but they were thoroughly well organised and apart from a bizarre own goal would have reached the 87th minute on level terms.

The CQN Annual is 196 pages dripping with pure Celtic. You can order online here, a glossy joy for someone for Christmas!

Our eclectic collection of African, Mediterranean and metropolitan players will have little experience of the biting Arctic wind that will blow in off the Angus coast tonight, just a few yards from Gayfield Park, whereas the part-timers from Arbroath will be very much at home.  This, my friends in Celtic, is what they call the Romance of the Cup.

Don’t be comforted by the wins over Barca and Spartak, they guarantee nothing.  One more lacklustre performance and dreams of Celtic’s fourth treble will be kippered.  2012 has been the year of the little man, the “diddy teams”, as a wild Rover coined them in the summer.  There is one remaining superpower in our sport and every game they play is a cup final for someone.

Get Up for the Cup, Celtic.

  1. Let’s hope we’re the “diddy” team stalking Man Utd, Schalke, Dortmund, Bayern, PSG, Malaga, Juve & Barca – all the way, and then on to VICTORY day at WEM-BER-LEE on May 25th!!!!!

I do at times find myself talking to myself on an old post! But Hayho the ole podium chasing is a bit of fun. Two in a row on Sunday and Monday for me, not crowing about you understand! Not for one minute, at all……….. well just one;-)

  4. Since we seem to think it is alright to pass judgement on Anthony Stokes’ behaviour & choice of friends, I suppose I might as well cast my vote.

The guy has nothing to explain & has certainly done nothing for which he needs to apologise.

It is none of my business.

It is none of Celtic’s business.

It is a personal matter for Anthony Stokes. He has not let ANYBODY down.

Said website can’t help pointing out that African Officials are probably less expensive to hire than Italian Officials.

  6. My ” blue, frostbitten hands” have now thoroughly defrosted and I can report that the sea level is fine…….well it was whilst I was having my normal dip this morning.

Golf was a laugh. Pitch in to about eight feet from the pin and bounce on another forty yards!

There is NO WAY the huns could afford Philvis.

They would struggle to afford even his expenses-on top of Charliebhoy’s.

  10. KevJungle the Celtic youngsters did consistently well in that Daily Express tournament.

It was probably youthful bias on my part but at the time I thought that led to English resentment and was a factor in the Daily Express withdrawing sponsorship. It was in the era of Liverpool/Forest/Villa dominating Europe.

Playing 5-a-sides against teenagers is never a good idea.

  11. My take on Anthony Stokes:

Those who are saying Anthony was wrong are too concerned about what the Hunnish Hordes of Scotland think.

Philvisreturns, you must have posted in a fraction of a second there. I clicked ‘publish’ then clicked on the home page to make sure it was up and you were already Up for the Cup.

surely as a high profile footballer he is in effect an ambassador for the club and obviously his behaviour is obviously going to come under scrutiny

JJ, I’m down at Herc’s Den every second sunday watching young ACGR play footie. Maybe you can drop down for a natter and a transfer of said flask. I think its a home game this sunday.

I assume the flask contents have evaporated? What did you think of 3E then?

Are you going to the game tonight? I tried, but couldn’t get tickets. I’ll open my back door and listen for the roar as we sweep these troublesome fish loving yokels aside.

Last time I went to that free to the public gallery only 30% was free. £24 total to visit the pay exhibitions. The rest was cafes and tourist tat. The splendidly restored Great Court at the British Museum is now the same.

HH Agreed. Today’s Herald front page rips into Anthony Stokes and Celtic, with a desperation to deflect from Green last night and Murrays debts. It’s an old story to Celtic fans- The Stokesy one-but the Herald spun it today ..

And still they don’t ask Murray a question….. Ever!

  26. WITS,

I know only too well that these are not ‘nice’ people.

There are always a lot of conflicting pressures in these situations.

Maybe his father, mother, wife, brothers, whatever, are good people.

Maybe some of them have done kindnesses to Anthony or his family.

Relationships in life are never black or white.

    Judge not………….

  27. KevJungle I purposely didn’t mention Charlie’s performances to see if anyone else would. Sometimes when you recall these things or mention them in the pub the reception is one of naked scepticism. Thanks for confirming that I didn’t imagine that whole episode or grossly exaggerate it in my head.

  28. Wits

    Certainly.

You are making a case against someone you know and dislike. Perfectly fair.

The MSM are not interested in that.

They are simply using Stokes` presence at the event to create negative press about Celtic.

Celtic supporters who reinforce the MSM`s nonsense are pandering to the Hunnish Hordes.

    Jungle Jim,

You need to remember that the support include a considerable number of people whom we would not consider being from the traditional diaspora. There are many without Irish heritage as there are many who are not from a Catholic background.

You only need to look back at the song debates to see there are a fair few who find anything to do with Irish emancipation as offensive and has no place at Celtic park. So we should expect some hostility to anything that betrays Irish support. They are the people the board want to attract, so get to the back of the bus
