You are in Scotland, wise up

Glasgow and Edinburgh have four stadiums with a capacity of 50,000 people or more: Murrayfield, Hampden, Celtic Park and Ibrox.  Hampden will be under lease to Uefa at the time of the Scottish Cup Final on 22 May.  This arrangement permits games to take place but prohibits fans from attending.

The Scottish Government (I’m not a fan, but to their credit), would almost certainly permit fans to attend, as their example-setters in London have already indicated they would do the same before that date.  Given this opportunity to have thousands of fans at a showpiece game, if you were in charge of the SFA you would move it from Hampden to Celtic Park, Ibrox, Murrayfield (my preference).  If necessary, you would move it to Cliftonhill to permit “the lifeblood of the game” to be in attendance.

However, you are not in charge of the SFA.  Given a choice between holding the Cup Final with fans at another venue, or holding it at an empty Hampden, the Association decided on the latter option.  These people!

Five Newco players were caught, red handed, breaking restrictions on Valentine’s Day.  They are free to face Celtic on Scottish Cup duty next weekend, nine weeks later.  Thanks to the SFA, suspensions will kick in days later.  Celtic broke zero restrictions in January, but rules were changed on-the-fly by the aforementioned Scottish Government, forcing Celtic to play two games at a critical time of the season without 16 players.

Don’t try to wreck your brain looking for fairness or consistency here, you’re in Scotland, wise up.

probably the worst thing that can happen to a batsmen in a cricket test match is to get out first ball in both innings

it is called a King Pair

one of the next worst things is to get out on 99, so close to a century

i wonder if it happens to any batsmen during the summer tests between england and new zealand that Henry Blofeld (OBE) on Radio 4 Test Match Special will refer to the batsman as being out for a Prince Philip

A nice touch i would have thought

    Hhmm.

So, two themes in the article Paul.

Both relate to problems with the same root cause.

    The SFA.

Despite genuine attempts by Celtic and Peter Lawwell to pursue modernisation of the oversight of our national game, the SFA’s level of control (in the absence of ANY scrutiny) remains.

    Time for a new strategy.

    Call them out.

    Call out their sheer incompetence.

(in this case pimping out our national Stadium for a share of UEFA’s crumbs at the EXACT time of it hosting its most significant annual event – the cup final)

Call out their arbitrary disciplinary process.

Call out the ineptitude of their leaders and their lack of qualifications.

Call out how much these leaders earn.

Call out the “imbalance” of Grade one referees’ “backgrounds” (copyright Sevco on Collum).

Call out their previously published strategies and their failure to deliver.

Call out their historical employment of those guilty of sectarianism or racism.

    Don’t support their promotion events.

Don’t release our players for international duty.

Call out the incompetence of the national team’s medical team.

Call out levels of public money which prop up this dysfunctional organisation.

    Hail hail

  6. Of course, this will mean that the English Cup Final will be played in front of an empty stadium, won’t it? Must be the same deal if UEFA are having matches there…

  7. scotbrownsbhoys on

What does Peter want the fans to do with regards to SFA cheating? Boycott Scottish cup?Not possible this season obviously.

Lawwell can go down in a blaze of glory and call them out but we all know that won’t happen. Leaves it to the head coach like he always does, here’s hoping Dom McKay’s got a bigger pair!

  8. Just a short comment, Paul.

I agree with all you say in your piece today.

Such is the vitriol being poured out against PL & D of E, that I will swerve the blog for the rest of the day -“it’s bound to get worse. I don’t get involved in hate-fests, not even as a bystander.

Good question, but the FA Cup Final is on May 15, one week before the Scottish Cup Final.

But the EFL Play-Off Finals are scheduled to be played at Wembley, May Bank Holiday weekend, Sat 29 May, Sun May 30 and Mon May 31, with a possible 25% capacity. No mention of UEFA there.

We are left to wonder what works UEFA would have to complete given that Hampden is likely to be limited to 12,500 for Scotland’s game against the Czech Republic on June 14.

No hate for PL from me but season ticket holders have limited sway in the game given their investment. You’re looking for the custodians of the club to speak out. This having the bigger outlook isn’t exactly working for us.
