Scarcely a week goes by without me asking you to support Mary’s Meals.  This year, every school day, over 5,000 kids in Malawi or Liberia ate a meal paid for by CQN’ers, or ate in a school kitchen built by the money you raised.

By now, you know as well as I do, the impact this has.  School attendance increased by an average of 30% where these meals were provided, as kids don’t need to work for their food.  They are educated, learning skills, which will provide life-long improvements in earning capacity and opportunities.

Being better nourished also makes them healthier; mortality rates will improve as fewer succumb to the afflictions of extreme poverty.  All because you donated a few pounds here and there.

Alzheimer Scotland were in touch after you raised an incredible sum for them after we learned of Billy McNeill’s condition:

“Thank you so much for supporting the work of Alzheimer Scotland by raising £3264.37 through your BT MyDonate page “Celtic fans for Alzheimer Scotland”.

Dementia is a major health and social care challenge in Scotland and there are currently over 90,000 people with dementia, a number that is expected to double within the next 25 years.

Our work includes:
•             Provide our network of Dementia Advisors across Scotland to support people with dementia, their families and carers and work with local communities to make them more dementia-friendly.
•             Support funding Dementia Nurses post in every health board in Scotland to lead vital improvements in dementia care.
•             Provide our freephone 24-hour Dementia Helpline (0808 808 3000)
•             Fund the Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Research Centre in partnership with the University of Edinburgh
•             Campaign for the rights of people with dementia
Best wishes and thank you again for your fundraising support we really do appreciate it.
Gillian Dimmock, Fundraising Support Officer.”

For 13 years we have held the CQN Charity Golf Day in Aberdour, the summer focus of our fundraising.  This year, CelticRollerCoaster wrote on behalf of the Walk with Shay campaign, who received £1300 from the CQN Golf Day.  Shay (4) suffers from Cerebral Palsy and will need help, not available on the NHS, to sit, walk and lead as normal a life as most of us take for granted:

“Thank you for the fantastic £1300 raised at the CQN Golf Day and for the thousands more CQN’ers contributed to Walk for Shay throughout the year.  The great news is that Shay’s development has really benefited.  The impact you have made on one small boy is incalculable.”

After receiving a donation from the Golf Day, The Celtic FC Foundation wrote:

“Thank you so much for the wonderful donation of £1,100.00 which has been allocated to our 2017 Christmas Appeal.

“The Appeal reflects the very heart of the Club’s charitable and humble beginnings as it aims to follow in the footsteps of Brother Walfrid, providing comfort to those on our doorstep.

“This year, we want to help around 300 local families facing poverty, to provide a meal on the table and gifts for the kids. We want to bring the magic of Christmas to those homes. We are also looking to help vulnerable local pensioners to ease the financial burden at a challenging time of year plus a number of other local charities who support those experiencing homelessness or other disadvantage.

“The generosity and compassion of the Celtic Family is unique and unsurpassed and CQN’s gesture is a perfect example of that.

“Please pass on our thanks for Sharing the Spirit of Celtic this Christmas to all those involved.”

The Celtic FC Foundation is now an integral part of being a Celtic supporter.  You did not just contribute at the Golf Day, on dozens of occasions throughout the year, you answered the call to get involved.  Last week, we learned it wasn’t just 300 families who benefited from the Spirit of Celtic, Christmas campaign:

435 families in Glasgow and Lanarkshire in poverty and hardship were assisted.  Aid also went to vulnerable pensioners in the city, hundreds of our homeless, vulnerable women and men, while gifts were given to the chronically sick children in our community.  The Foundation reached those in need in London, Ireland and as far as Canada.

Being able to invest the emotional energy into supporting a football team is more than many in our communities can manage, as all their energies go towards survival.  But this is how the Celtic Story began, among the destitute and hungry.  How lucky we are to be anchored to this football club, to these values.

You did all of this and more in 2017.  It is humbling to see so many great people do so much, so often.  You are a constant inspiration.  Thank you.

Have a peaceful and loving Christmas.

  7. Now I know that this is not the feast day of our Lisbon goalscorer’s patron saint but I feel like oul Good King Wenceslas this morning as I look out my window at the snow lying about deep and crisp and even on this cauld but sunny southern Ontario morn awaiting another snowmageddon, we’ve already had 2 coupled with 2 temperatures risings and the snow melting, thank God that climate change is only a Chinese hoax lol.

The Terriers most famous supporter oul Happy Harold once said that “a week is a long time in politics” well so it is with fitba.

This time last week the longest running domestic record in the UK came to an end and personally I was gutted. As I have previously said it was more the manner in which we lost, after the 3rd goal went in I took the dug for a walk, I actually feared a 2016 Barca or QSG was on the cards.

I came on here for some therapy, I almost wrote “hi my name is Tontine and I’m a Celtic supporter”, now I’m not trying to denigrate the AA which I think is a wonderful group.

I’ve had more than my share of family and friends that have won their battle as a result of it, actually saw a few participants at the vigil last night who still attend their meetings, any organisation that says the Our Father, quotes the Serenity Prayer as well as the Prayer to St Francis no matter the faith or creed of the attendees without fear or fervour must be doing something right.

But for me CQN is my support group as far as Celtic sites are concerned. I first discovered this site after a loss over in hades 0-3 in the game of 9 yellows and both mcshagger and mutton being allowed tae play even though they had pulled out of the Scotland squad, the huns had lost tae the hibbees the previous week so it was damage limitation time. Due to work commitments I never saw this game, still haven’t.

The smsm as per usual was gushing about the mighty deidco so a decided tae give them the body swerve. Sitting in work still gutted I wandered on to newsnow and found this blog, never heard of it so I gave it a try. It was a single page written while the game was in progress and I then found out the extent of the cheating, it wasn’t that we were bad but as a result of the bookings scared tae tackle.

I had no idea how to refresh the page and it wasn’t until a few days later I found the site again, somehow I became more aware of how a blog works so I was now hooked.

I early on wrote an article of how a club whose support that was prone tae sing the “bonnie wells o’ wearie” while we sung about the “dear little shamrock” and whose chairman was a decent person who had helped raise money for worthwhile causes including Catholic charities had took the wrong fork in the road leading to their manager suffering an untimely and unexplained death on a trip doon the watter, I even quoted from the Observer’s article on them.

Dear God I really got castigated for that, told I wasn’t wanted on this site and tae GTF. At that time I was heading overseas for a conference and thought well that’s that and my CQN short life was over. On returning I looked in tae see what else was being said about me and was pleasantly surprised to see the show of support, so I came back and have been on here ever since. Incidentally for all their cheating, that season culminated with Tommy Burns Thursday and a greater blitzkrieg of Manchester than the 3rd reich ever perpetuated.

So here I am on this Christmas Eve a lot happier than I was last Sunday, we have regained the lost 3 points and the 7 GD we lost has also been pulled back plus 1.

So as it’s now Christmas somewhere in the world I’m wishing those from the land of my birthplace a Nollaig Chridheil and for those from that land beyond the sea a Nollaig Shona

  8. I’m away this time!

  16. Merry christmas to all . Here and abroad.. Wishing you all the best christmas you could ever want… But as you open ur presents and smile at how well someone knows you… Or laugh at that novelty gift, just remember that christmas will always exist.. Same time every year… But not everyone will be here to celebrate it!! So step back from the presents and appreciate the presence of everyone that make our christmases special… Because christmas isn’t a season.. Its a feeling.. Of togetherness and love and cheer… In years to come no one will ever remember the gifts they got but they will remember the people they spent it with!!! So

Merry christmas everyone… Lets make it a gud’n
