You did this in 2016

Like you, I get tired of this place sometimes. We’ve all got plenty of other things going on in our lives, plenty of calls on our time and energy, the last thing we need is to deal with the consequences of a narrow win when a comprehensive victory was expected, but, of course, the compensations are immeasurable.

You get home on Christmas Eve, after a long day, and a longer year, and you read something like this:

capture-20161224-170118

The donor had been in touch and asked what the next project was.  I’ve big plans for 2017. What I’m thinking is that we use the Anniversary Year to push the core values of our community – and our club – to new levels. Like before, we’re going to do work for many causes, but I’ve a notion that the time is right to engage with Celtic fans to a greater extent than has been possible before.

A decade or so into online football communities has given us enough material to measure the impact they have had on clubs, the media and how fans relate, but what is clear, is that we are the first generation for whom it has been possible to engage an entire fan base on helping those who are most in need.

In earlier times this kind of activity was often limited to those collected together in a hall. The call wasn’t able to reach onto your lap (as it is right now). We have to acknowledge this is a new time, with new opportunities to reinvigorate our club with its founding values.

Society changes, the Celtic support has changed. We can’t infuse future generations with a love of the old country’. Frankly, it you follow the demographics, future generations of Celtic supporters will increasingly come from the native population, or England, Eastern Europe, Pakistan or elsewhere. The ‘old country’ will matter less.

What we can do is put our founding value at the core of who we are. Win, lose or draw, our mission as Celtic supporters is to be there for those most in need.

The is what we are going to do in 2017. That £1000 (+ gift aid) is the second substantial donation Mary’s Meals already have towards putting food on the table of Sean Devereux Primary School, Liberia, for a year. We’ll talk more about the work of Sean soon, and about the school in his memory.

This, of course, is just one act in the book of what you did in 2016.  I honestly don’t know how many meals were paid for, it must be around 100,000, kids were aided, and the magnificent work of Foundation was supported we discussed on Thursday was helped throughout.

We’ll have a raffle coming up on Boxing Day, which will see someone collect two tickets for Ibrox on Hogmany, with money going to the School, so look out for it – it will only be live for a couple of days.

You deserve a great Christmas – so make sure you have one!

Paul

Too much concern given about a game against the Manky Mob. Tomorrow is more important, because we have to deal with it first.

Got a silly head cold/ man-flu thing brewing up, best go to the gym and try to cure it.

  3. As a youngster i loved good pop songs (still do), i remember feeling nervous for George Michael at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert. How could the king of cheesy pop songs, do justice to the Supergroup that Queen were at the time? He sang Somebody to Love, and was fantastic, Freddie would have approved

  5. So seems like the deal for the American could be off

Wonder who else is lined up .. the performances of Armstrong these past 2 months have been fantastic. Fair play to the lad. Another I had written off in pre season. Any wonder I’m unemployed at moment :-)

  6. I haven’t been on for a bit and Merry Christmas everyone. Having read the above article and given the PLC’s now apparent strategy to drop the ‘old country’ and pursue our ‘native (?), English , Eastern European and Pakistani’ cousins for their support (dosh). Here’s a wee bit of music to get into the mood:))

Maybe Barca should do the same to attract a wider support? There’s no future in being Catalan. Nobody identifies with that?

I think Paul 67’s article reflects that increasingly these islands are becoming more multi cultured, more diverse and in a nutshell much different from the old days.

Yes , we must remember history but as a modern progressive club we must embrace the mega change in our society.

Hope you and yours had a great Christmas .

Big week for the Celts. With two wins we can rubber stamp the league, and send all of us in to the break on a high.

During the break attention will turn to Europe next season. Both in terms of training and recruitment.

These really are exciting and uplifting times on the pitch. Let’s hope for a similar upturn in fortunes and decision making by the custodians of our great club on other matters.

Rangers’ stint in the lower leagues saved a lot of clubs from the brink says former Gers boss Stuart McCall

Bradford City manager praises Rangers fans as he recalls the Ibrox club’s plight in his bid to help a local rugby league team who have gone into administration.

    Former Rangers manager Stuart McCall

Former Rangers boss Stuart McCall reckons the Ibrox side’s time in the lower leagues helped saved Scottish football’s minnows.

McCall is now in charge of Bradford City and is trying to take them up into the English Championship.

He has also become involved in a bid to save the city’s rugby league team Bradford Bulls, who have gone into administration for the third time.

And the former Motherwell boss has drawn parallels between their demise and Rangers’ plight after they went into liquidation in 2012.

McCall, who took over from Ally McCoist three years later when Gers were in the Championship, said: “It was a shock to everybody when Rangers got the punishment.

“I was Motherwell boss then and it was a financial blow to us because they used to bring 6000 fans twice a season. That was £250,000 out of our budget straight away.

“But teams who were getting 200 each week were suddenly getting 2000 so it helped save a lot of the smaller clubs.

Rangers fans flocked to games in their droves when the Ibrox side were in the lower leagues

“Even though Rangers were playing against plumbers, joiners and plasterers, the fans were turning out as a matter of principle. They wanted to show that the club would never die.

“It’s a similar situation for the Bulls. The fans will be vital.”

  21. My friends in Celtic,

it is truly a good thing to help the poor and the most vulnerable without any publicity. To be able to give time as well as financial assistance without any motive is a great legacy.

Celtic are absolutely correct to explore the widening of their demographic, even if it seems to be at the expense of their core support.

After all, where else can that support go?

They are merely following the lead of the Lib-Dems,the Labour Party in Scotland and latterly in the U.K.,and the Democrats in the US and I expect Celtic to be just as successful in this venture.

Not posted for a while so festive good wishes to all…

Just reading about Portland Timbers playing hardball over some doubtless talent but largely unknown (to us) player…walk away is the correct response.

Dembele ans Sinclair types more to my tastes to be honest…plenty of I bo land Premier/ Championship players who just need a intermediate step with some European experience thrown in. The road for these signings has been paved..les of a risk and if anything more potential for rewards…( Thanks Victor, Fraser , Virgil, etc)….

In fairness to the lad from America he has agreed terms. Good luck to Portland in keeping an unhappy player. We all know this movie has 2 endings.. Both are good for Celtic.

My main hope for January window continues to be the clearing out of players who will not make

it. Good for the team and better for the player to rebuild..much like Dembele and Sinclair just further down the development curve.

The god thing is we know what Rodgers looks for we know how he plays.. It’s the Celtic way. Therefore only Celtic standard players need apply. No more sub standard misfits likely to appear in the near future.

Have a good New Year.. Happiness and health to you all in 2017.

  25. Hello again all you young rebels.

Hope everyone had a happy and healthy Christmas.

Our day at the beach was the hottest i’ve ever felt since we came

to this side of the world, my seville sombrero didn’t work too

well as my auld napper looks like a bit of Royal Stewart tartan,

must have been all the holes in it.

Didn’t do much swimming as sharks had been spotted in areas

they don’t normally frequent, but they can’t bite you if your

sitting at a beach bar with a Guinness in your hand can they?

Anyway the’re like huns, they lurk in the depths and only attack

    when your vurnerable.

Interesting that Paul 67 is suggesting Celtic will be widening their

demographic, maybe they should think more about retaining and

improving their connection with a huge Celtic support here in Oz

which as you know is my usual gripe but it’s still the season of

    goodwill so nuff said.
