You did this in 2016

Like you, I get tired of this place sometimes. We’ve all got plenty of other things going on in our lives, plenty of calls on our time and energy, the last thing we need is to deal with the consequences of a narrow win when a comprehensive victory was expected, but, of course, the compensations are immeasurable.

You get home on Christmas Eve, after a long day, and a longer year, and you read something like this:

capture-20161224-170118

The donor had been in touch and asked what the next project was.  I’ve big plans for 2017. What I’m thinking is that we use the Anniversary Year to push the core values of our community – and our club – to new levels. Like before, we’re going to do work for many causes, but I’ve a notion that the time is right to engage with Celtic fans to a greater extent than has been possible before.

A decade or so into online football communities has given us enough material to measure the impact they have had on clubs, the media and how fans relate, but what is clear, is that we are the first generation for whom it has been possible to engage an entire fan base on helping those who are most in need.

In earlier times this kind of activity was often limited to those collected together in a hall. The call wasn’t able to reach onto your lap (as it is right now). We have to acknowledge this is a new time, with new opportunities to reinvigorate our club with its founding values.

Society changes, the Celtic support has changed. We can’t infuse future generations with a love of the old country’. Frankly, it you follow the demographics, future generations of Celtic supporters will increasingly come from the native population, or England, Eastern Europe, Pakistan or elsewhere. The ‘old country’ will matter less.

What we can do is put our founding value at the core of who we are. Win, lose or draw, our mission as Celtic supporters is to be there for those most in need.

The is what we are going to do in 2017. That £1000 (+ gift aid) is the second substantial donation Mary’s Meals already have towards putting food on the table of Sean Devereux Primary School, Liberia, for a year. We’ll talk more about the work of Sean soon, and about the school in his memory.

This, of course, is just one act in the book of what you did in 2016.  I honestly don’t know how many meals were paid for, it must be around 100,000, kids were aided, and the magnificent work of Foundation was supported we discussed on Thursday was helped throughout.

We’ll have a raffle coming up on Boxing Day, which will see someone collect two tickets for Ibrox on Hogmany, with money going to the School, so look out for it – it will only be live for a couple of days.

You deserve a great Christmas – so make sure you have one!

Paul

  4. A lot of things make me happy in life but one thing makes me happiest, my Family, part of that Family is CQN, especially when you read threads like tonight.

Sadly, some of our Family have left us since Christmas past but they are remembered fondly, they brought sunshine to our lives. Now God willing they brighten up a heavenly place. We live in hope that one day we will be reunited with them. This evening as we prepare to Celebrate Christmas, a celebration of a birth, let us remember those that were born and have gone on before us.

Many of us will be hurting for the losses we have suffered but do not despair, just think of the happy times.

Let us remember our loved ones who have gone before us, let us remember those still with us, let us remember those that need our support.

Christmas Blessings to you all, Bloggers, Lurkers and your Families from the Lennybhoy Family.

A merry and joyful Christmas to all CQNers.

Brilliant performance today from Celtic. Horrible, horrible conditions and an unbelievably bad referee but we prevailed by keeping the head and playing football. Every player a hero, as far as I’m concerned but particular mention to Cristian Gamboa and our very own Izzy, both of whom I thought were outstanding.

Well done to the Bhoys and a big thank you to Brendan and his staff. Onwards and upwards. I can’t wait until Wednesday.

  9. Couldn’t agree more with Paul. As someone who is involved in the amateur game this site allows me to feel involved in the wider Celtic family although I can’t get to games. Celtic has always been about more than the football and for me CQN epitomises this.

I have always known that we have to be better than them and that has been passed onto me from my old man and those that went before him. I am a frequent lurker and occasional poster but I am sure that in the months I will be a willing contributor.

A merry xmas and prosperous new year to one and all

  10. Good night all,

I think the only time you can appeal a red that came about as a result of two yellows is when one of them was for simulation. If not the aforementioned I am almost certain that in today’s game there is no right of appeal but I stand to be corrected.

Me, I remember the pain of building Barbie stuff. The swine that run Mattel corporation are forever cursed in my eyes. The quality of the snap together furniture and the shitey instructions caused me no end of grief between the hours of midnight and 2am on a few Christmas Eves 20 odd years ago.

Now when my lassie tells me she will be joining us at 10 tomorrow morning, I really miss those hours of misery.

Yes, children make Christmas, and I miss the joy of the early rises and chaotic rushes to get to Mass. The lhad is here right enough, he has succumbed to the flu he brought home with him. Two late nights and a cold Accies game have done for him, so he is loaded with flu remedies and having an early one.

Enjoy the pram building, you may not know this but it doesn’t get any better than this.

Sadly Oldham let things slide after the heady days in the Premiership were over. I watched the steady decline, home and away, for ten years from 1994 to 2004 when weekend commitments prevented regular attendance and finally a move abroad put an end to ever visiting Boundary Park again. A succession of ineffective stop gap managers who, with a couple of exceptions, namely Ian Dowie and John Sheridan who stopped the rot for a while and even gave some hopes of a revival, failed to make any difference. Niel Warnock came and went, good home record and a one man self PR but hopeless away, even getting into a pitch side scuffle at Carlisle. Ian Dowie and Neil Warnock did not even have proper contracts, sort of suck it and see. The rest were pretty crap despite some success at previous clubs. Maybe it is something in the air or water at Boundary Park. I always reckoned that Sir Alex and the entire Man United team would perform like, well, Oldham Athletic in normal mode if they were magically brought in at colossal expense. This season again, no building up from a solid base of previous years development, just starting all over again with a complete new set of players and manager. No wonder they struggle to attract supporters, it was getting pretty dispiriting when I followed them week in week out. Even diehards who had supported them for many years longer than myself were pretty fed up with the state of the club when I called it a day. Looking at the change in players there seems to be a constant merry go round, probably not much different to other clubs in League One, but somehow other clubs manage more positive results than Oldham. I suppose it must be difficult to fully motivate these lads, their employment is certainly not very secure, a year here, a couple years there or even only a few months. If the manager suddenly gets the right mix of those passing through, then a successful run may happen, though no doubt fraught with the prospect that any player with the extra special spark gets cashed in at the next transfer window, providing he is not on loan of course. I do not hold out much hope tomorrow, but maybe I should put a bet on Sheffield to win, I always lose at gambling.

The wee blade is my best pal, even better today when Leigh scored and she started dancing about the living room singing “Leigh, Leigh super Leigh” without any of my prompting, you enjoy Christmas with the family, not the best your Bhoy isn’t a 100% but would be worse if he wasn’t 100% miles away (keep the glass half full :-)

SPFL managers- they are deffo telling their players to go down under ANY Celtic players challenge. Shameful and dishonest behaviour. I think the number of fouls against and subsequent bookings bears that out.
