It was the morning after the night before, at Celtic Park, but the home team still collected three points against Motherwell. The champions did not get out of second gear, and surrendered possession for long period in the second half, but they got the job done without conceding a chance worthy of the name. You get the feeling this squad is pacing itself. You can only climb the mountain so many times.
Jonny Hayes won Man of the Match, largely for his balls into the box. The second goal came from a dangerous Hayes cross between defence and goalkeeper which that Motherwell defender, Richard Tait, felt obliged to intercept, turning the ball into his own net. Jonny sent in an equally good cross a few minutes later, but there were no takers on that occasion.
He was a few weeks shy of his 30th birthday when Brendan Rodgers singed him from Aberdeen: the exact opposite of a ‘Project’, but he is a solid player who did not look out of place in Rome on Thursday night. Cameos at Ibrox and in Rennes earlier this season further demonstrate the £1m spent taking him to Celtic was money well spent.
While Celtic have improved significantly since the early-season 2-5 win at Fir Park, so have Motherwell. I liked the way they knocked the ball around and it was noted to me that the thuggish element, which characterised much of their play in past seasons, was gone. I hope Steve Robinson is does not end up wasting his talent at Tynecastle.

By the ole by, whether you favour wearing the poppy or not, imo, that chant on Sunday was utterly out of order. Finally, I think it is worth highlighting the immediate impact that Jeremie Frimpong has had in his Celtic career. He has now made 5 starts for us. In 4 of them (Partick, Ross County, Aberdeen and Motherwell) he’s been the runner up for the CQN man of the match. He also picked up a single point in the League Cup semi final win against Hibs. And whilst he currently sits 7th in the cumulative league table, remember he has only played 5 games whilst all those above him have played 12 or more.
I’m sure that everyone’s now delighted that we have the final ‘International Break’ of 2019. We return to domestic action in 12 sleeps time with a home tie against Livingston.

I didn’t see the full 90mins yesterday so couldn’t contribute to Jobo’s competition (initiative:-) but on the limited Sportscene highlights Edouard & Jonny Hayes looked terrific .. I know big Fraser & Elyounoussi are on EPL wages but they are two players I would love to get signed up … as for Melbourne Micks summation don’t disagree although I do think Greg Taylor will have a part to play if he can displace Jonny or when fit Bolingoli.. loving our fitba this season … and Callum & Ryan could be our engine room for a decade .. terrific Celtic times

Two points about yesterday’s CQN PLAYER OF THE YEAR. Firstly, I did not vote since I only saw the first half before I lost the stream and secondly, I can’t understand why McGregor gets so few votes. ( I notice you voted for him). Is it because he plays the ball so quickly and therefore is not on it as long as another player who runs with the ball? The quick pass can have more effect IMHO.
