You, your Celtic heritage and Vanessa

759

I’m sure many of you will be aware of the Vanessa Riddle appeal which has featured in the comments page in recent weeks.  Vanessa was diagnosed with a form of childhood cancer in 2009 but after extensive and difficult treatment received the all clear 17 months ago.  Last month her parents received news that she had suffered a relapse and that no suitable treatment was available in the UK.  Treatment is available in Philadelphia at a cost of £500,000.

Although the diagnosis is only a few weeks old the fundraising effort to send Vanessa to Philadelphia has already raised over £137k with increasing numbers of people becoming aware of the need on a daily basis (CQN’er, Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan is not a man to be denied).

To help raise awareness and funds, Taggsybhoy has booked Jury’s Inn, Glasgow, two nights next month, one of which, Saturday 11th February, he will hold a Music Quiz for the CQN community, with all proceeds going to the Vanessa Riddle Appeal.  You may have heard mention of the appeal but if you have not caught the details take a moment to update yourself here.  Getting involved is as part of your Celtic heritage as green and white hoops.  Don’t forget to book for the quiz, there’s a limit of 70 people for the room so you can’t turn up unannounced.  We’re home to the Highanders that day.

Issue 6 of CQN Magazine is currently being prepared; drop me a line if you would like to advertise, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

  1. Nightmare scenario.

I see they are suggesting that we may end up with 2 newco ranglers now.

    One was bad enough .

  2. Do you know the very best thing about being a CELTIC suporter?? No, not the club, it’s history, it’s players, the memories. No. It’s the fans.

I cannot get over the kindness, the words of sympathy and all the help offered in the case of wee Vanessa, it make me so so proud.I’m sure all that will help her parents in the long fight ahead of them.

Kevtic…Falkirk replay at deathstar. Horrible time to grow up as a young Celtic supporter. And the rain!Actually felt like the end of the world.Still shudder thinking about that game.

    I do too.

I was sitting down the front, completely soaked and still carry in my memory the horrible image of their player, after scoring the winning goal, swooshing on his belly through the water-sodden grass, arms aeroplaned out, straight towards me.

    Shudder’s right!

I’ve just been catching up with yesterday’s bhlog. Jeez this place is mandolin daft. I’m thinkin’ that there may be a requirement for the CQN Glee Club Mandolin Ensemble to play during the interval at the ole pop quiz – in which case I will be available backstage as a ‘phone-a-friend’ should there be any questions on Eurovision (67-94), Showtunes (1955-2005) or Indie-Folk (2006-present day).

  9. Is it true that Criag Whyte is following Tory policy and now has a benefit cap for players?

  13. GiggsyBhoy – unfortunately you’re not on your own in that regard. The savagery of what is going on at the moment has left the axe hovering above many many heads. Most of those heads are tax paying, law abiding, hard working, decent and honest ones who did nothing to cause the calamity we are now facing but are being asked to pay for it. And that is absolutely no consolation to you or anyone else in that situation.

Similar situation in my own workplace and I don’t know of many workplaces where it isn’t happening. I hope it works out for you. As you say, not a nice time. Horrible, horrible place to be.

  20. How much is the SFA paying this guy? Why don’t you just do what happens in Holland, Spain, Germany, etc and let us play a team in in the bottom Division or is that too much common sense?

Mark Wotte has suggested that Celtic link up with a First Division club to send five young players out on loan at a time.

The SFA’s performance director introduced a blueprint for the future development of players at Hampden yesterday with former Celtic winger Brian McLaughlin amongst seven new coaches working directly with schools.

Wotte is determined to bring through kids ready for the top level of the senior game but has also recognised the gap between u-19 football and first team level.

Celtic currently have Greig Spence and Richie Towell out on loan at Hamilton and Hibs but Wotte would rather see a stronger loan arrangement in place.

The Dutchman told The Sun: “Why don’t Celtic and Rangers not look at linking up with First Division clubs at the start of the season and give them five players to develop? It’s not about money, it’s about first team playing time.

“That would be a possibility, together with an Under-20 league, to bridge the gap between young players and the late developers who need another year.

“Those are the things we can improve on. The most important thing is you have an open mind to change.”

An under-20 league is likely to replace the current u-19 set up but it’s doubtful if that change will make a significant difference.

The bulk of the current Celtic u-19 squad such as Marcus Fraser, Joe Chalmers, Mikey Miller, John Herron and Paul George were playing at u-17 level last season and have made a big impact moving up a level.

Extending their eligibility to play at that level to three seasons won’t accelerate their development but a properly planned loan arrangement would expose them to regular first team football against more seasoned professionals.

Most First Division managers would be happy at the prospect of working with some of the countries most promising kids but such a deal would compromise the identity of the club who would only have the players for a season or two.

Partick Thistle and Jackie McNamara would seem an obvious match for Celtic to loan some players out to but looking at the prospect from a Thistle point of view the Jags boss sees things differently.

Before the start of the season he said: “I’ve got the basis of my squad and think that it’s dangerous to get too many loan players in, I’d go for two or three maximum.

“If you have more than that I’d feel that I’m doing someone else’s job bringing their players on- I’d rather bring one of our kids through if I think that they have a chance.”

  23. “Has a player ever been idolised by a club that he has never played for?” asked Simon Coulthard last week.

    from Guardian Books

Plenty is the short answer. Clubs around the world have soft spots for those to have never worn their shirts:

Albert Kidd The former Brechin, Arbroath, Motherwell, Dundee and Falkirk striker is a legend at Hibernian despite never having played for the Edinburgh club after his two goals (the second of which was preposterously good) against Hearts in the final 10 minutes on the final day of the 1985-86 season denied Hibs’ rivals the title. Hearts needed only a draw but lost 2-0 and Celtic took the championship on goal difference. “Amongst other things he was immortalised on a T-shirt, a copy of which was sneakily handed to the late great Socrates on a visit to Edinburgh a few years ago,” writes Fraser Pettigrew. “I believe a Hibs supporters club named itself in his honour and Sir Albert (as he is known) has also been entertained as guest of honour at the Australian Hibs Supporters Club and doubtless many others. The 3 May has been designated Albert Kidd Day by Hibs fans. We never tire of bringing his name up because, frankly, we’ve had piss all else to crow about over the last 30 years. Kidd is also somewhat revered by Celtic fans since they were the beneficiaries of Hearts’ fall at the final hurdle that day, but it is at Easter Road that he enjoys the highest levels of idolatry.”

I know this isn’t specifically addressing your point but, I have always been an advocate of reserve football. Now, I’m not too sure why the reserve leagues were stopped ? Was it for economical reasons or, was it because Celtic reserves were about to clinch their 9/10 successive league title during the Murray era ?
