‘IBROX CHEERS ANNOYED US,’ CALMAC

CALLUM McGREGOR revealed the Celtic players were annoyed by the reaction of Graeme Murty’s outfit when the Scottish Cup semi-final draw was announced.

The interim Ibrox boss admitted his team had CHEERED when they were paired with Brendan Rodgers’ side.

But his words rebounded spectacularly when the Hoops trounced his side in a lopsided encounter at Hampden on Sunday.

McGregor, who netted the second goal before the interval, said: “We were excellent. To win 4-0 in a semi-final makes us well deserved winners.

“They cheered the draw, they fancied it, but you have got to show up in the big games and we did that.

“The draw is made and you think: ‘Okay, be respectful’. Everyone is excited, it is a big derby, but it is disrespectful and that annoyed the players.

“We were really here to prove a point. You can’t do that. You can’t cheer the draw and we turned up on the big stage and beat them.”

On-loan Norwich defender Russell Martin inadvertently set up McGregor when he made a mess of a clearance from a Kieran Tierney cross.

The Scotland international playmaker said: “I saw the cross going in and I saw his body shape and thought he might have scuffed it. I just tried to take the chance and get in there. It fell perfectly, I have got a great finish and it has nestled into the far post.”

McGregor is looking forward to getting the opportunity to play his part in another Celtic historic achievement of a back-to-back trebles, but is concentrating on each game as it comes.

He added: “It will be unbelievable. First and foremost, we need to try and tie up the league and get the three points we need.

“Everyone will be desperate to play in the Cup Final and desperate to win it. It could be another great season for us.”
