Back in the 80s I had a soft spot for Porto. Their 2-1 1987 European Cup final win over Bayern Munich, coming from behind in the last 15 minutes and scoring with a back-heel, against a vastly better resourced opponent, was something Celtic fans could relate to.
A decade later I followed Porto’s tribulations as they tried to recapture those heights in the Champions League with a new team. They remained an engaging team but when it came to the big clubs there was always one who would wipe the floor with them. Manchester United scored four without reply in the 1997 quarter finals. The following season Real Madrid hit six over two games without conceding as Porto exited at the group stage.
It was a group stage exit the next season, before Bayern Munich took them in the 2000 quarter final. Then what looked like a significant reversal as they failed to qualify for Europe’s top tournament, settling for Uefa Cup football instead in season 2000-01. They eliminated Celtic from the group stage in 2001-02 but were taken home and away by Real Madrid in the last sixteen.
All this time they were fine-tuning player development and recruitment strategy; buying marginally better players and selling for ever-increasing money. Real Madrid may have wiped the floor with them but Porto’s business model was fine-tuned by 2002. Real won their last European trophy that season but the gap with Porto was closed in an instant.
Celtic are less than two years into their current strategy and we’re miles ahead of where we should be. It will be extremely difficult to match this season’s on-field achievements next season, but the stage you exit the Champions League is only one yardstick available. It took Porto years of slow and meandering progress to learn what it took to reach the highest level. This is our task.
On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.
The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

Police first creditor to react
14th February 2012
635
Strathclyde Police were Rangers first creditor to ask for a payment guarantee from Rangers’ newly appointed administrator, saying, “Strathclyde Police is a public body and has a duty to make sure public resources are used appropriately. We are seeking an urgent meeting with the administrators to ensure that any payment for policing costs at future Rangers games is guaranteed.
“Until we have such a guarantee we would not be in a position to commit public resources to policing an event unless we had a reassurance that our costs would be met.”
Before the administrator is able to allow the scheduled game against Kilmarnock on Saturday to proceed he would need to guarantee payments for all services employed and goods used, casting considerable doubt on the game proceeding. The administrator is liable for any expenses he incurs from now which cannot be paid by the club.
Funds will need to be found for turnstile and security staff, while footballers may be asked to play for free.

We need to recruit some of those big tough hurling fellas from the old country to go on the pitch and sort out those rough Italian boys for us.
Mibbe we should just move the entire club back home to Dublin and field a whole team of them. I’m sure Dermott has a nice piece of spare ground earmarked for us to build a nice new stadium.
It would save a lot of the Irish support that dreadful journey to Scotland, made bearable only by the good graces of that famous Irish airline.
Does anyone think Adebayor would get near that side if Defoe was fit.?

Good Evening,
I was sad to hear of the passing of Joe Gallagher formerly of Clydebank FC earlier this week.
Joe was captain of the Clydebank side that won the West of Scotland Cup in season 1949-50 , and if my information is correct he went on to play for Dundee.
My dad played along side Joe at St Stephen’s Boys Guild and they later teamed up together again after the war when they played in an “old crocs” team against the Italian prisoners of war up at Duntocher.
To trade Joe was I plumber I believe and when my mum and dad got married he plumbed in their bathroom suite at their house in Montrose Street— and refused all attempts at payment.
That was they way Clydebank was.

Rest In Peace, Maria.

Just seen some scenes from outside Greyskull today and it astonishes me to see tumbleweed drifting past.
Where are all the revolting hoardes? Don’t they care that their evil empire is crumbling?
If we faced the dreaded admin there’d be thousands outside.

there is an icon of celtic football club who lost the prime of his career due to being shackled by david murrays fantasy football game at glasgow rangers.
that man now lives in australia and i raise a glass to him tonight…his name is paul mcstay.
paul mcstay showed incredible loyalty to celtic during a period in which rangers fc decided to embark upon a spending spree that has now PROVED to be totally beyond their means.
history has been shaped[in rangers favour] in an illegal and distorted manner.
rangers current plight [no matter what the big tax case outcome will be] has been accumilating and hidden for almost 20 years by murray.
they have cheated all their scottish rivals and robbed players like ‘mcstay’ of ever playing champions league football because they basically spent money that nobody else [including celtic] could hope to match.
this disgrace will prove to go back way further than people think.
i do believe that all their titles in the last 20 years should be stripped out of sporting integrity.
i hope paul mcstay amongst many others is having a moment of solace tonight.

Not illegal to trade while insolvent if its done with the intention to get the business back in good financial standing. What it is illegal to do is to trade while knowing or ought to have known that there was no hope of avoiding liquidation.
In this case the director(s) can be held personally liable.
Imagine he gets his £18m back and HMRC pursue for fraudulent trading, this will go straight back to other creditors

Well folks, the day we had all predicted has come to pass.
And in true Chicago style, it’s a St Valentine’s Day Massacre.
Paul67 deserves immense kudos as the founding father of a new kind of Celtic media. CQN was the first, and IMHO the best site for intelligent debate about football in general and our beloved Celtic.
It bypassed the MSM, who stand tonight utterly utterly discredited. And it spawned successful specialist imitators like RTC.
After today, Scottish football, the Scottish sports media, and maybe even Scotland itself will never be the same…
(BTW, My first season as a regular, pay my own way season ticket holder was Hampden. Who knew, as we stood there watching a series of below-average Rod Stewart impersonators, that this day would come!)

Two things went wrong with the cunning plan Whyte had when he took over. Firstly Sally got them put out of not one but two European competitions. That meant a big reduction in income to keep them going until the Big Tax Case could be decided.
And secondly the Big Tax Case was adjourned meaning they had to try to survive for longer.
It was never going to work.

Some more Admin Day poetry, with apologies to Lewis Carroll and his boy Andy:
from Through the Smoke and Mirrors
Jabbacocky
‘Twas brillig, and the slimy huns
Did gyre and gimble in the wage:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabbacock, my son!
The jaws that lie, the claws that catch!
Beware the Chuckle bird, and shun
The furious Bombersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the zombie foe he sought–
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabbacock, with eyes of flame,
Came wiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabbacock?
Come to my arms, my Beamish bhoy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.
‘Twas brillig, and the slimy huns
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
