CELTIC striking legend Frank McGarvey has been diagnosed with cancer, his family have announced on social media.

His sons Scott and Sean posted messages on their Twitter accounts confirming that the 66-year-old former Hoops hero had been diagnosed on Thursday.

The identical messages read: ‘Unfortunately our Dad received a cancer diagnosis yesterday and we are waiting on more information from the experts.

“Will update here when we know more. Thanks for all the support and well wishes. Paul, Sean, Scott and Jennifer.”

HAMPDEN HERO…Frank McGarvey leaves Dundee United keeper Hamish McAlpine helpless with Celtic’s 1985 Scottish Cup winner.

McGarvey, who was bought for club record £250,000 by Billy McNeill from Liverpool in March 1980, and scored 113 goals for the Hoops with the last coming against Dundee United in the Scottish Cup Final in 1985.

The showpiece spectacle at Hampden was balanced at 1-1 after Davie Provan had levelled with a spectacular free-kick.

With the clock ticking down, Roy Aitken fired over a right-wing cross and McGarvey threw himself to bullet an unstoppable header beyond the helpless Hamish McAlpine to make certain the silverware would be bedecked in green and white.

Glasgow-born McGarvey joined St Mirren in 1975 and stayed at the Paisley club for four years before making a £270,000 move to Liverpool before returning to Scotland the following year, snubbing former Love Street boss Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen to join boyhood favourites.

CUP THAT CHEERS…Celtic goalscorers Davie Provan and Frank McGarvey celebrate 1985 Scottish Cup triumph.

The livewire frontman won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup at Parkhead.

McGarvey also picked up seven caps for Scotland between 1979 and 1984.

After returning to St Mirren for a second spell, he won the Scottish Cup again in 1987 before finishing his senior career with Queen of the South — where he served as player-manager — and then Clyde.
