Moneyball student of the game

1434

The extent of Celtic’s pursuit of Ronny Deila can be seen from the fact that Peter Lawwell established a false identity before setting up a Norwegian football blog in early 2012 to allow him to pen this article titled, The Awesomeness of Ronny Deila.  There is a chance the blog wasn’t written by our CEO, but the appreciation of Ronny’s talent is clear.

No deal has been concluded, so it would be a mistake to get too worked up yet, but the fact that we have got to this stage clarifies where we are, and are not, looking.

Neil Lennon resigned two weeks ago and a whole series of names, most of whom are freely available and would be delighted to accept the Celtic job, have been hotly tipped by media and bookies alike.  Celtic will not be appointing the likes of Owen Coyle.  Suggestions, by many who like to knock the club, that they will make a dash for season ticket cash by big name are also wrong.

Roy Keane was a serious contender, wanted by some within the club.  He was in pole position a week ago, forcing those who only days earlier had proclaimed with great triumph that Neil resigned due to budget constraints (he didn’t) to re-write their script, but Roy had other plans.  As did some at Celtic.

The club have been busy looking for an intelligent, technically gifted, coach.  One who has a track record of innovation, improving players and improving teams.  Ronny will not sell tickets on the basis of his own identity, become none of us knew him, but it was absurd to suggest Celtic would look for a short term fix with enormous Champions League qualifiers looming a few weeks away.

By any measure Ronny is a student of the game, a “Moneyball” candidate, according to the above ‘Awesomeness’ article.  We don’t need the archetypal British shouter-manager, renowned for his inspirational abilities.  You can get the guy who puts the cones out to do the shouting.  We don’t need a media darling either.  Someone already alerted me to the fact that surely ‘Ronny brings it on himself’, whatever the media decide ‘it’ is, and the manager doesn’t need an Irish granny.

I’ve not seen too much of Lennoxtown but what I have seen is a campus with talented coaches, fitness experts, nutritionists, sports scientists, scouts and analysts.  We need a manager in tune with this approach to the game.  Someone who will dovetail with this infrastructure, who intuitively recognises its value without needing to be told.

These appointments are always a risk, but if we’re looking for someone to fulfil this criteria, we’ll do very well. I’ve yet to back a managerial appointment by our board in 10 years writing this stuff. This could be about to change.

  1. Thank god the board didn’t take up Neil Lennon’s offer to help find the next manager, if he thinks Roy Keane fits the identikit.

  2. MWD – you’re querying of Paul 67s statement along with NL’s comments today are making me wonder of NL was mutually consented. Certainly there’s a note of bitterness to what NL has said (if he’s being quoted accurately).

  3. Winning Captains, see you next week, is BRTH going to be there too, will bring industrial ear defenders if he is!

I’m getting flights booked next week, barring some disaster I’ll be in Germany a day befor I have to be for work, so Awe_Naw and I will have a good ole day and night!

That ties up why Celtic spoke to Roy Keane. Neil Lennon was involved and asked about his successor. The club spoke to Roy and so they should if he was championed by our out going boss. Roy didn;t fancy it. We move on. Excited by the new manager and the promise of attacking football.

I don’t read it as an attempt to undermine the incoming manager, (although I agree it does and big time too) I rather read it as a subtle shot across the bows of whom I’m not sure. Again I’d ask the question why did you put that into print Neil and why now?

Neil Lennon has gone and I wish him well; Roy Keane is not our manager and I wish him well; Ronny has got the gig and I wish him well; but regardless of the fortunes of all three, whether good or bad, the Club will go on. I just wish the execs of the Club would stop treating the supporters with anything less than honesty. We’re big bhoys, we can handle it.

As posted by Lionsroar67 back on page 21:

Neil Lennon has revealed that Ronny Deila was set to replace Johan Mjallby as his assistant manager.

The Stromgodset boss arrived in Glasgow last night with Peter Lawwell and is expected to complete the paperwork to take over from Lennon later today.

Mjallby’s decision to step down was the first hint that changes were coming at Celtic with Lennon stepping down two weeks after the season ended.

“He was going to be brought in as No 2 when Johann Mjallby left,” Lennon revealed about Deila in an interview with the Irish Independent.

“He came highly recommended, he’s highly thought of. I don’t know if it’s confirmed with Celtic yet, but I know from contacts in the game that he is well respected as a coach.

“We recruited Stefan Johansen from Stromsgodset, so we were aware of his work. It’ll be interesting to see if Ronny gets the job.”

A week ago Roy Keane seemed set to takeover with the departing hoops boss surprised that the Ireland assistant resisted a move to Glasgow.

“I was surprised and a little bit disappointed,” Lennon said about Keane’s decision. “I think he’s ready for it. He’s had, what, three years since he was out of the game as a manager and he’s been watching a lot of games, he’s been at Champions League games, and he’s got vast experience.

“He fits the identikit of a Celtic manager. I can totally understand his situation, that it’s a personal decision, but I was hoping he would take it. He would have given the club a big lift.”

Kitalba – that is exactly what I would like to know. What does Neil Lennon think is going to be achieved by undermining the new manager before he is even unveiled? Lenny didn’t have to say a single word about Ronny replacing big Johann but he chose to.

Considering the amount of work that had to be done to persuade fans to take to a former club captain, who was very well respected, when he took over the job, Lenny knows Ronny is already facing an uphill slog on top of a mighty difficult job.

So why make it any harder for the guy?

    ==

Perhaps Lenny wanted to honest with us – The Fans. Perhaps he is as sick of the Incessant spin from the board as we are. I would doubt that Lenny wants to undermine Ronny in anyway. Hopefully he will inform us of some more ‘wee secrets’. About time someone with some genuine knowledge told us how it is without all the attached board inspired machinations. One indisputable fact – Ronny will be a huge risk.

Could Ronny just be keeping the managers seat warm until the main man turns up in November?

If reports of his wages are to be believed at 6k a week? This doesn’t sound like the wages of a manager for Celtic Footall Club, more like a highly paid coach?

  10. Bringing in roy keane would have given celtic a lift all be it similar to having a can of coke getting a crazy sugar rush then back down..if you get what i mean..

Dont think neil thinking was in line with pl and the structure he is trying to put in place..ie director of football etc

We are in a small country no competition not alot of cash..something had to and is being changed..works in other countries..spain italy swiss belguim to name a few..

    The structure wont fail!!

Its the people running it that could fail..

That why i think neil left..structure didnt suit

Lenny is obviously having a pop today at someone and its not Roy Keane

“He fits the identikit of a Celtic manager.” Keane is so far away from what we need and closer to what some fans feel comfortable with; he is not my identikit of a manager let alone a Celtic Manager.

I would Rather give Ronny the limited budget than Roy or Lenny

PL is sticking his neck out and changing the structure of the business….some people think change is always bad but in this environment for us to continue progressing some stepped change has to occur.

PL has succesfully steered the club through the last 5-10 years and done a remarkable job- the club is stronger than ever….A great platform to try something a bit different

  12. Alex McLeish was on the Radio Clyde news once, telling how he couldn’t get

the signature of Celtic’s Bobo Balde because, in McLeish’s words – “We’re disappointed that we couldn’t sign Bobo for Birmingham as, Bobo has refused to sign the confidentiality clause required by Celtic.”

    What does that mean?

Did the RAF bomb Irish ships in the Bay of Biscay? Did Churchill try to starve Eire into the war? Did the Irish Navy go to Dunkirk? Did de Valera sign that book of condolences to GIRU the American Ambassador David Grey? Did Churchill refuse to have the British fleet based at the Clyde because there were too many Timmys’ in Glasgow?

I think that’s roughly what NL was on – £300k/year. It’s certainly been mentioned on the past that his salary was around half of McCoist’s.

  19. My friends in Celtic,

Neil Lennon goes with thanks and best wishes.

Leave me out of any doubts on his integrity or any mumblings of character assassination.

What he has done for us and what he had to endure earns his right to speak his thoughts.

Did he not say he would assist with his successor. ?

    HH.

PS : I also think and have stated that Ronny Deila would have been better as a No 2 for a few years.

  20. So Neil Lennon obviously was happy to stay on as manager after Johann resigned. he and club had identified his number two and it sounds like all parties were aware of this reading between the lines. So why did Neil Lennon change his mind and decide to leave? Surely was not due to his treatment in his previous 14 years in Scotland or he would not have been considering whom his new number 2 would be. What happened between Johann resigning, Neil Lennon obviously being part of the process to install a number 2 to him as manager and Neil resigning.

must have been all those years of threats and his family then!

I do not believe Paul67’s view to be correct. Neil Lennon left due to his budget being cut by £5m and the chances of his securing a CL spot with reduced budget would be limited and he was not willing to risk his reputation or carry on under the current Celtic downsizing IMO.

I want a better future for my son’s generation than the widening gap in wealth and health inequalities that has been the story of Britian since WW2 despite many Labour Govts. The Union might have worked for some but not for the poorer sections of our society.

I’m voting Yes for HOPE of a better tomorrow.

  23. To all those concerned about my reaction to Obama’s intervention, I know he was asked a loaded question. He also said he thought the UK should stay in the EU, which seems to have been ignored. I just think he should have acted like other politicians and said nothing one way or the other, about other countries’ domestic affairs, in which he is only interested in so far as it has any affect upon the USA. Trident siting came immediately to my mind. I feel we are only of value to the USA if we keep nuclear weapons. Doesn’t sit well with me,especially as I grew up with the idea that Eisenhower demanded that the Holy Loch be where the USA could base it’s nuclear submarine fleet in the by gone Cold War Years. Glasgow and its environs would have been wiped out. Hated growing up with that threat.

So, when his successor sticks his oar in, I don’t feel too happy.
