Celtic doing here?

572

Late last night Celtic got their goalkeeper, Scott Bain (26), on loan from Dundee, from where he had already been loaned to Hibs this month, while also landing Jack Hendry (22) on a permanent deal from Dundee.

The Hendry deal is intriguing. The player didn’t get much of a chance to shine before being released by Wigan in the summer. Two dozen games for Dundee later and he is a Celtic player. This is not a conventional career path, so what are Celtic doing here?

First of all, the player has the attributes Brendan Rodgers looks for in a central defender. He has pace and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. The jump from Dens Park to the Allianz Arena is eye-watering, but when you have just signed a four and a half year contract at Celtic, someone must think you are capable of reaching the required standard to play at the latter venue one day.

I don’t know if Jack will make it that far in the game, but I am pretty sure Brendan Rodgers will improve him as a player and craft him into a valuable professional – one we may sell at a profit one day.

Set alongside the signing of Lewis Morgan (21), you can see a strategy here. If a Scottish player in his early 20s raises his profile high enough, we’ll sign him. Only some will make the grade, but the aggregate financial consideration of having these players at the club will probably be profitable.

Alongside all investment in youth sits Marvin Compper (32), one time German international and by all accounts, the real deal. Marvin will have the responsibility of leading the younger defenders through their on-field development.

The other side of the transfer window equation passed without Celtic cashing in any of their premium chips. By the time Moussa took to the field against Hearts on Tuesday, he knew he was going nowhere, and his performance indicated that whatever was previously on his mind had passed. Kieran Tierney’s recent contract renewal seems to have convinced all that there is no business to be had there. I expect some movement out in the summer in the central mid and central def positions.

You and I have been through January transfer windows when the objective has been to make sure we win the league. Now it is all about player development and getting ready for the inevitable Champions League qualifiers. We have not measurably improved our chances against Zenit this month, but it is not clear how possible this is (or even if it is necessary).

The market in England took another step into the ridiculous this window, possibly in anticipation of the announcement of a bumper new TV deal later this month. The new deal will not come into effect until summer 2019, but previously we have seen player values inflate immediately after the deal is announced. Game Theory suggests this inflating possibility will have been anticipated.

What you and I have also pondered for over a decade is when the great English football bubble will burst. I’m not going to predict that date, but just as sure as we knew Rangers would crash and burn years before they did, so will the English Premier League. The model has inherent risks which cannot be safely accommodated. Let’s wait and see how much Sky TV are prepared to pay this time.

Any comments to make on this as part of the Res 12 investigation, who is the next mason to continue the cover up.

  2. The fall guy from compliance report like Farry before him will be well rewarded for his service to Rangers and Sevco.

  3. Regan already has a job withUEFA on a CL marketing group,he obviously wasn’t busy enough in his SFA role.

Hi,bud. Got your info when I got up for work last night, forwarded it on.

Naturally,I’d earlier suggested he stay out of town, but with a rail link, but…

He knows himself how many jobs he’s lost through being too lazy to jump on a train. A five-minute walk to Swindon station, then second stop Bath was too much for him.

Thanks for the help,as always. He’s a good lad-for a hun!-wi similar pastimes to my own!!!

Aye,they’re not all bad in Kilwinning,I’ve even managed to housetrain some huns in my time!

Sounds like your lad may have met some of the still-too-few Celts from the town. If so,they almost definitely drink in Taylor’s.

About the only place most of us feel comfortable. Shocking in this day and age.

Hope you enjoyed Derry. It’s on the bucket list for a hoot in the near future!!!

Another one who thinks he knows better than our Manager and thinks cost of a player is everything. Brendan asked for the 4 players and they were delivered. Loans for quality players we could never afford to buy is ok by most of us who understand the finances involved.

Perhaps you should come along to the AGM and ask Peter, Desmond and Brendan directly instead of spouting ill informed rubbish on here !

  11. Good riddance Regan.

Would be easy to clear up the China thing: both Kheredine and Traynor show their sources.

If @BBCKheredine hurries, he can catch up with Regan on the next train out of town.

Shameless and craven behaviour from the BBC.

Jim Spence’s take on this would be interesting.

At the risk of being neganon’s ‘creepy acolydte’ I too was underwhelmed by the article’s defeatism ref Zenit and the implied salivation at the prospect of selling on a young Scot who’s literally only just walked through the door.

    *******

Anyone know how big (tall) Neganon is? Or Kev J?

Reason I’m asking is that I tend to agree with most of what neganon posts…. but I dont get anywhere near the abuse that he does…

Now, it is entirely possible (or, likely, even more so) that people scroll by my posts …you cant abuse what you dont bother reading …

but, I know that people do read the posts from NA’s ‘creepy acolyte’ Jamesgang, yet he gets away pretty much abuse free…

    makes me wonder ….

I’m 6’3″ and 225 lbs… and Jamesgang is a fair bit bigger than me…. Is it because we are just acolytes that we dont get much grief … or are the happy clappers really just a bunch of fearties?

Didn’t speak to the lads from Kilwinning, not even sure if they were in during the game, but got the distinct impression they were not Celtic men.

Had a great time in Derry even though it was a fairly brief visit. Highly recommended, would certainly go back.

  17. So the difficult January transfer window is over and now Celtic can get down to the business of winning the Championship and with a healthy eleven point lead things could not look better for the club as we head into 2018. Don’t know a great deal about the new lads coming in but if a top class coach like Brendan gives us his seal of approval that’s good enough for me.

As weather conditions improve in the coming weeks we will see Celtic players at their best and let’s hope the new guys can steer clear of the injury bug and see what they are capable of.

You lot ??? We are ordinary fans, but we have invested in the club we support (only costs about £1.30 for you to buy a share and come to the AGM).

And who is moaning about your club (sorry Sevco ?) , but attending the AGM lets us hear what the Manager’s vision is, what the financial implications are and what the goals for the coming season are. all subject to question and answer.

On the other hand we could just bang away aimlessly at a keyboard instead – very constructive !
