Doing lots right at Youth level

671

Delighted for the Celtic Youths, who won the Under-20 league for the fifth successive season.  Youth football is not skewed in favour of the wealthier clubs in the way first team football is.  Celtic will be able to afford better coaches and scouts, but wage levels at this age are broadly consistent across the board, so that five year stretch is an indication that we’re doing a lot of things right at development level.

Greg Dyke’s review of English football this week drew an incredible level of condemnation but it’s central thrust, how to translate 18-year-old talent into first team stars, remains a challenge.  Especially at clubs competing who recruit to compete at the very top of the European game.  Celtic chose to send many of their top Youths out on loan this season, one of the suggestions Dyke’s report made.  We’ll see how productive this proves.

The final week of the season saw the Youths need two wins, against Rangers* and Dundee United Youths to deny the boys from Sir David Murray Park snatching what would have been a significant title.  While progress has been patchy for their first team, Youths boss, Gordon Durie, has narrowed the gap at the top better than the other Murray Park coaches.  If and when they can afford to get rid of McCoist, don’t be surprised to see Durie step up, I hear he’s impressed for all the right reasons.

*occasional use of the word “Rangers”, “Airdrieoneans” or “Elvis” without the prefix “Newco” or suffix “Costello” does not infer that the original entities to bear those names are currently in existence.  Both football clubs were liquidated, Sevco Scotland changed their registered name to Rangers after administrators of the old club changed and released their name.  Clydebank changed their name to Airdrie United, and then to Airdrieoneans.

Pump it up.

Hope everyone one attending the Hootenanny this afternoon has a great day.  My chances of getting there and remaining intact is diminishing by the minute.

  1. Ryecather, – only briefly !

Came away thinking the exact same as yourself.

And I agree he has a real depth of feeling for the club. I got some stick on the article due to the Bosman / Monaco stuff but he he left after six years and became a millionaire and a much better player overnight. Many of us would make the same decision. Has always insisted he wanted the club to get a fee when Fergus took Monaco to court re EU jurisdiction etc.

He’ll have a role to play at Celtic at some point – would be a criminal waste if he didn’t.

I think we still have some work to do on the issue of the realities of Scottish Football in 2014

The following contribution appears on the comments under a BBC article regarding the uncertainty surrounding St Mirren manager D Lennon.

” I’m sick to death of accepting St.Mirren as an also ran. I’m resigned to the Rangers and Celtic first and second, I want to see St.Mirren third. Stuff the rest.”

Togs looked out for the hootenanny …. Three quarter length shorts and Bermuda shirt … Sunglasses and Jesus sandals

Any advice on funds required … Is it still £1 a pint in town … If not I might need to get another tenner from the cash machine to double my wedge :)

See you all in mchuills ( for cats )

    Tommy Joad,

There is a lot of merit in your advocacy for John Collins.

I understand that Celtic wish to go down the continuity route in appointing football managers.

If so, then it would make sense to bring in someone with the maturity of JC for, perhaps a season, then, assuming Neil takes up an offer elsewhere, there will be a seamless transition during the important short close season.

Is Hootenanny rhyming slang for Jim Goodwin?

Anyhoos, I hope all the attendees have a great time and I wish I was there!

  6. Don’t know if it has been raised before but with Sammi’s probably imminent departure IMHO an ideal replacement might be Ciftci…. He’s big, strong and very skilful…..he also works hard stretching defences and can score… I would like to. See him paired with LG who is another very skilful fast worker. Don’t know if he would be available but surely worth a punt if we are to believe Borreiter and Balde are now to be moved on. Hope we do not miss out again on another DU player for some expensive unknown like the two mentioned….

Far rather Kilmarnock bit the dust for reasons highlighted throughout the morning by tom molach

However if Hibs go down they would be a more imponderable conundrum at that level to the Scottish Mourinho than the presumably Boydichenko-less Ayrshire Huns

BT wanted to show it but Hibs have filled their quota of live home SPL matches to both BT and Sky

SPL left it to Hibs, STV website suggesting no money was on offer to grease their palm as it were

I’m not convinced the majority of your fellow Liverpool supporters would agree with you. The team’s defensive collapse took a helluva lot of pressure off Man City before the Villa game. If Liverpool had played a bit more conservatively in the last 15 mins only, and had gone on to take 3 points, City would really have been feeling it at 0-0 at half time against Villa.

Still, after what happened at the Etihaad 2 years ago, an early West Ham goal would make things interesting.

  12. from the record :BT SPORT wanted to broadcast the Hibs v Kilmarnock relegation play-off to a nationwide TV audience but the Easter Road side have refused them permission to screen the tie for fear of fans choosing to stay in to watch the game.

    St Mirren 1 Hearts.

  14. Parkheadcumsalford

Aye, but the hurtin’ hun Forsyth also said on 5 Live how the Scottish second tier would be more exciting than the Premier League if Hibs were relegated.

    Hail! Hail!

  15. If I remember correctly, Forsyth wasn’t very supportive of Jim Spence when he referred to Rangers being dead, and came under sustained attack from the zombies, so, if the same happens to him for the use of the ‘forbidden’ word ‘liquidation’, he’ll not be expecting any help from that quarter, I hope.

  16. We’re gonna need a new song – “bring on the hearts, the hibs and the rangers” ….. ooops :-)
