Fill your boots at Month of Lions

874

I never met Jimmy McGrory, who died an elderly man when I was 15.  I don’t if he was around Celtic Park much in the years immediately beforehand, but I never even saw him.  We have many genuine greats but he is one of a handful of those who could put a claim on being our greatest ever.

I was fortunate enough to meet Jinky several times and have yet to meet Kenny Dalglish or Henrik but the Tier-1 Celtic great I’ve met most is Billy McNeill.  Billy’s achievements as a player are legendary, his managerial achievements were none too shabby either, but the way he has represented himself, his family and our clu,b for over half a century, is incredible  He must have shared thoughts and memories with well over 100,000 Celtic fans on a one-to-one basis.

Like many of the Lions, and unlike to many less decorated heroes, they never make you feel like you are imposing on them when you’re soaking up the rays of history which flow from them.

The renovations outside Celtic Park are nearing completion and the area will be opened by Billy at 13:00 this Saturday, before the Aberdeen game.  While the façade of the stadium has changed greatly since Billy first stood out front as a fan, the school, car park and Kerrydale Street changed only by aging gradually, and the occasional resurfacing.

This renovation will change the way future Celtic fans view the ground in the decades ahead.  As a club, we are privileged to have someone of the calibre of Billy McNeill there to celebrate our present and future.

Get along early to support him – and bring a camera.

We are holding a Four Lions CQN Night at the Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club on Friday 6 June.  Willie Wallace is back from Australia for the Lisbon final so we’ve nabbed him for a night, to join Bertie Auld, John Hughes and the one and only Tommy Gemmell.  Tickets are genuinely scarce after a lot of local update, if you want to be there, this will be your first and last day to respond…..

The 70th Anniversary Supporters Association Dinner is THIS Friday at the Kerrydale Suite.  Dinner, music (step away from the mic. Anthony) and entertainment among hundreds of friends.  Tickets cost a mere £30.  With the event being on Friday, and Fridays being synonimous with statements these days, I wonder if we’ll have another jelly and ice cream sweet. What a memorable CSA Rally that would be. See you there.

If you would like to attend either event, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

FYI, with the Big Cup final returning to Lisbon this month, CQN will be wallowing in unapologetic nostalgia for the next 31 days and beyond.  We forget how lucky we are sometimes.  Billy, Willie, John, Bertie and Big Tam, celebrate the way only Celtic fans can. Fill your boots.

That should, of course, read 522 goals for Celtic in 501 games over 16 seasons: more than a goal a game – for 16 years …

steinreignedsupreme has already addressed this point. If we were in a position to pick and choose there are many companies we should avoid. Though I suspect that no matter the company someone would find something to be offended about. Sweat shops anyone?

And again, if taking their money without increasing their revenue leads them closer to obliteration then so be it. Heck I’d take money from The Rangers to advertise their renewals on the basis it would cost them money and earn them SFA.

Ok, maybe that last analogy was taking it too far!

It’s not worth it. He’s probably feeling defensive after the last few days and seeing things that aren’t there in your post.

Anyway, is Fridjohnnsen (sp?) one for the future. I saw clips of him in a game at Lennoxtown and I can see why he’s called the Fridge!

I met Jimmy McGrory late 1971. Outside the ground.

At that time I would have been about 8yo,to my shame he didn’t immediately register.

Then it did-oh,you scored hunnersa goals!

I think playing young players in the CL is a huge risk. Morton shipped goals against many a team in their own league this season. Over 120 mins we couldn’t score one goal. It was a terrible result given the talent on the pitch that night. Two of the young players mentioned earlier have not played one minute of first team football this season.

I still think we need another striker if Samaras leaves us this summer. One with big game experience would be my preferred option.

I know what you mean: as a middle-aged geezer who grew up in the wake of the Lisbon Lions and having met a few of them on a number of occasions down the years (and, therefore, being well aware of what genuine, level-headed guys they all are), I still struggle to shake off the urge to genuflect whenever I meet any of them …

Celtic are stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they ban the press they will use that as a stick to beat us. If we do nothing they will continue their campaign against us. If we ask for the name if the “source” for any story they will bleat about freedom off the press and protecting their sources.

  13. cliftonville celt from belfast praying for Oscar the wee legend on

Mate drinks in the Rock bar and told me they have instructed their solictiors to ask the DR to explain what makes the bar ‘notorious’ !!!

Spoke to AS at a Cliftonville game earlier in the season and asked him why he always seemed to be in Belfast every weekend – he told me he comes over with his agent and he likes it because he feels comfortable and gets no hassle (he also said it was definately not every weekend) – unlike going out in Glasgow

Paddy McCourt and Niall McGinn own the Rock bar

Niall owns several business’ along the falls road

The Kaiser Chiefs are headlining the West Belfast festival this year – a festival that celebrates West Belfast and its cultures and history – including its strong Republican history – haven’t read anything condemning them – I’ve even seen several 30 ft bill boards advertising it !!!!!!

If Celtic are going to sanction AS regarding this how will they justify it when their manager has been in many bars on the falls road over the years along with most of the playing staff !!!!

Is it now a crime to visit Belfast in Scotland? One of the most popular weekend break destinations in Europe ? Most of the Zombie hoards seem to arrive here for the full month of July !!!! Their team also usually come once a year to play their cousins – wonder if the DR will remark on the songbook ? Wonder if they will follow the players to any of the supporters clubs ?

    Wouldn’t think it likely

  15. I was just looking at some photo’s on my daughters Facebook and low and behold there is a photo of Anthony Stokes with my grandson and son in law. Here’s a wee take on how the DR might view the photograph.

    Stokes in IRA pub shocker.

A recent picture of Anthony Stokes has emerged of himself in a pub with an Irishy sounding name. Sources at the DR believe he was in the pub watching a game of Gaelic football which of course is a foreign sport and shouldn’t be allowed in this country. In the photograph it shows Stokes with a 6 month old boy. Although the picture looks harmless enough, sources claim there may be something more sinister behind the photo. It is believed the boy may have heard his father singing the BOTOB on the 17th of march which of course is one of the banned songs. So inadvertently Stokes is linked to this whole shocking issue. It is also claimed by the same source that the boy may be one of the youngest members of the IRA. Inquiries continue.

I think my story might have more credibility.

These newspapers survive on the back of the advertising income they receive. They are in the business and know how advertising works.

They wouldn’t be spending money advertising their own product if it wasn’t cost effective.
