Lessons for picking a manager

1010

Back in January we discussed Mauricio Pochettino, who yesterday left Southampton to become manager of Tottenham Hotspur.  He is without question the hottest management property in the most bloated league in football.

He was also an unemployed flop a little over a year ago.

In reality, Pochettino is a good manager but he is also the latest in a long line of faux guru-managers, the aura of divinity around him is illusionary.  He was sacked by Espanyol in December 2012 with the club bottom of La Liga after 13 games, after propelling them up the league from a similar position two years earlier.  Espanyol’s problems were not Pochettino’s problems.  The club strategy had been failing for years, Pochettino was not the first manager to suffer as a consequence, in fact, he was the club’s third manager in a season when he took over.

He joined Southampton, who were on a different trajectory.  Southampton have been producing some of the best youth talent in the UK for a decade but a series of self-harming boardroom battles saw the club competing in the third tier of English football.  In Nigel Adkins the found a man who won two consecutive promotions and had them comfortable in the Premier League.

Then, in January last year, Southampton made one of the ballsy-est decisions in football history.  They sacked the successful Adkins and replaced him with the aforementioned unemployed flop.

Chairman Nicola Cortese, who was an outsider to the football industry, figured that Adkins could only take the club so far and that, with the appointment of a man in-tune with the new strategy, Southampton could make a real breakthrough at the top of the Premiership.

Pochettino did what Cortese wanted, not through obligation, but through instinct.  Unfortunately for Southampton, Markus Liebharr, who appointed Cortese, died, and his daughter-and-heir, Katharine, figured the family had spent enough of their fortune on an English football club.  With strategy tending towards a breakeven point, Cortese resigned.  It was inevitable that Pochettino would follow.

What are the lessons for us?

Forget looking for a guru, it’s all about the strategy.  Get the strategy right, only employ people who are instinctively aligned to it, and employ an intelligent, tactical student, even if he can’t speak the language.

Roy Keane like Neil is an abrasive guy and no doubt there could fireworks if Roy ever hits the SPL with refs, officialdom etc. It’s an excellent time for a new manager to take the reins at Celtic. You could say the SPL is now a cushy number for a new manager with no Rangers, Hearts or Hibs to contend with – unbelievable but true.

Roy probably has mellowed a bit with age but still has that mean streak and the rumours regarding Keano and the Celtic job may be accurate that Dermot may fancy his fellow Corkonian as next manager. Did Roy not win the double with Celtic when he played with us?

Mick McCarthy would also be a good choice. Loads of experience at club and International level

No Dermot Desmond is a Corkman who played hurling as a youth. Agreed, he does speak with a refined Dublin accent but in my opinion regional accents seem to be on the decline in this country.

Quite a read that from earlier. I also read, in that same journal only today, a British scientist, has discovered, in the Congo itself, a Peat bog as big as England.

    Question, can you dig it?

  17. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles on

Having looked at the stats only 3 candidates should be considered for the job:

    1. Neil Lennon win rate of 69.74% over 228 games.

    2. Jose Mourinho win rate 67.06% over 686 games.

    3. Jock Stein win rate 63.48% over 1005 games.

Unfortunately, the Big Man is no longer with us and if the other 2 ever manage to reach 1005 games I’m sure that their win rate will drop way below Big Jock’s 63.48%. Just think what the Big Man could have done with Mourinho’s money!

The rest don’t even come any where near that!

Maybe PL is waiting for England to go out of the World Cup in the inevitable penalty scenario and for Roy Hodgson to get his jotters.

  18. If Everton want to give Celtic £7 million for James Forrest the new Manager will have a decent starting pot money :-)

Wouldn’t be my no.1 choice, but would accept Keano, with a good coach ?

I posted on Monday to watch for that

    Hail Hail

  19. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles on

    Roy Keane win rate 38.67%

    Malky MacKay win rate 38.86%

In terms of failure there’s not much between them.

  21. I have a sneaking feeling that Keane could get the job. He definitely wants it and would be good box office. MON has already said he won’t stand in his way in relation to Irish job if he gets an offer. Not sure whether the fact that both Desmond & Keane are from Cork would have any bearing. I just think he wouldn’t cost the earth, would be high profile and could put additional bums on seats. Keane is definitely a genuine supporter & has been attending matches in Celtic Park for years.

  22. If MacKay gets the gig, the new frontage at Celtic Park should be renamed ‘The Malky Way’.

Presumably those in favour of Roy Keane are looking only at his success with Sunderland while it lasted and not at his lack of experience as a manager in Europe, short temper, poor historic relationships with colleagues, walk out on Ireland, quotes about not taking a drop in salary, sharp tongue, accusations of bullying, assault of fellow professional… Surely not?

  25. 18.21 The singing detective…..Gordon Strachan didn’t have any celtic connections….yet he hung about for 4 years…..wouldn’t mind getting another 4 years from him……knows the European scene inside out…..better proposition than yir malkies or yir ownies anyday……..go to it PL.
