Managing McGregor

182

Celtic players will begin arriving back from international duty today and tomorrow ahead of a six week, 13 game, run that will go a long way to determining the success or otherwise of their season.  Highest on my anxiety list is the condition of injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.  Noises from the US national team were that his condition was not concerning.  We should cope without him at home to Motherwell on Saturday, but he is one man you want fit and on the plane that departs for Germany on Tuesday.

My only other concern is with our perennial metronome, Callum McGregor.  Callum is relied upon by domestic and international managers in equal measure.  Memories of how we complained that Gordon Strachan overlooked the player seem foolish now.  How Ange manages the player during the next six weeks is important.  Get the job done early on Saturday then hook the captain.

A small encouragement, I know, but we still have to beat a Ukrainian team at Celtic Park next month, so the fact that some players we will face lost in Glasgow and drew in Poland to a Scotland side is a mental marker.   Well done to Callum, Greg Taylor, Anthony Ralston, Steve Clarke and the rest of the international squad.

You might be right about UEFA but the EPL voted recently that every club has to have one by the start of 2024/2025 season

  2. Toaty Trumper @ 1.16

Cannot believe that you plumb the depths with that comment.

You are a strange sort as your anti TB moonhowling has always highlighted.

I fear you were one of the 80’s Trot doom-mongers who shouted from the rooftops that with Maggie in her pomp progressive politics in the UK was finished and what we needed was revolution — and then along came the bold Bambi aka TB who manages to win three elections on the spin.

How stupid you must have felt when that played out in front of you — that you could be so wrong and the only way you could respond was to regurgitate Forger’s Gazette headlines to make your self feel good.

The issue is not just me but all the people who post on CQN — how you can introduce that name with all the horrible baggage associated with it — and spray it about like confetti to tarnish us all is beyond me.

That you can do that and many stay silent is a double disgrace.

Hopefully you will be at CQN Corner on Saturday before the game — we have much to discuss.

As an aside I fear that your desire to use that name hides a deeper truth about your past and attitudes — could I suggest that therapy works better than chemical support.

See you on Saturday — if you have the backbone to turn up.

  3. St Tams @ 2.10

I know for a fact that as far back as the mid nineties a youth I know was offered and accepted a signing on fee of £60,000.

Now I don’t know what he was on per week but I guess it was substantial.

I don’t think the young lad Doaks left Celtic for £800 per week.HH

  4. Mad Mitch you mentioned Barrowfield, has it been upgraded, and for the life of me why then does the girls team play all there home games on the Excelsior Stadium

Comment made at 1.16 this afternoon.

You might want to remove that comment.

It does not make CQN look good to allow such comments ongoing publicity.

Like myself , the majority of posters on here will only have known Garry through his posts . I miss his posts , which were always entertaining and , importantly , civil . There was a great deal of civility and togetherness on CQN at one time .

  7. TB10 @ 2.41

    B/field is being upgraded.

There are plans for a new indoor pitch.

Plus some of the other pitches have been upgraded in the past 2 years.

No B Team Stadium though which is why we still trek out to Airdrie for B Team / Ladies games.

  8. I´m no fan of Sky tv, never had it, but I´m glad they have come to a deal with the SPFL. I also liked Neil Doncaster´s comments in a bbc interview about how the result had been 41 out of 42 clubs in favour after being repeatedly asked by a queen margaret drive wannabee about his team from the South Side. 41-1….. biggest skelping since Arbroath 36 Bon Accord 0

  9. Mad Mitch We have 2 Training Facilities B/Field L/town and Celtic Park ,which has pitches ,yet the B Team have to play there games in the Excelsior Stadium ,That Lawell has a lot to answer greedy do and so

  10. That tells you something about Lawell and co ,no way should he and others get bonuses on top off there salary’s ,greedy so and sos

  11. TB10 @ 2.52

L/Town is very much a budget / Poundland training facility compared to modern standards.

It was low rent facility back in 2007/08 and after 14 years of stagnation it is nowhere near the standard we need. The fact that the indoor training area has been converted into a gym shows how small it was — not even quarter scale.

The improvements at B/field are a step in the right direction but nowhere near enough. While we need to work out how we are going to focus our two facilities going forward.

    L/Town = Youths / Academy ???

    B/field = 1st Team / B Team ? Ladies ???

    Or vice versa?

    There you go again.

You aren’t making your case very well.

You shout his name more than the most depraved skank on F*ll*w F*ll*w.

    Not good.

    Not good for CQN.

  13. RTT @ 2.50

Not a fan of the new SKY deal.

I think we could have done better.

Stuck with a second rate product for another 7 years.

    Not good.

    U18 wages in the EPL.

I am sure there are ways around it.

The situation regarding BD — just how much is he worth / what will he be worth in the future with the talent that he has?

Data point going forward — one to watch.

    .

Late in year birthday means that it was always possible that he would be a bit of late bloomer in the context of youth football. He is an interesting case — his success at L/pool in 3 months has been quite dramatic.

BD vs LA — 1st team starter at 20.

Invest a £1mill in wages over 3 years to get him to first team starter level.

Buy him for £3mill from a smaller club at 19 with less risk / more known ability?

There’s no answer to the TV coverage impasse for Scottish Football and no alternative in the short, medium or long term. The deal is money Celtic need but could get by without, the problem for the rest of the smaller clubs is that without it, they cannot survive. The classic Jimmy Sanderson line where the ‘ tail is wagging the dog ‘ and the driver for the SPL, no Celtic or Sevco, no TV cameras, no money to cover the empty stadia of provincial club fixtures.

The Sky money is the spine of the SPL and whether we like it or not Celtic are welded to whatever Sky ( the only show in town ) decide to pay. They can’t even be bothered, aside from Hibs v Hearts showing the smaller clubs in action against each other.

We play in a poor league with Celtic and Sevco propping up an unsellable product, there are no viewers, no rival bids, and the erstwhile heinous Hampden and Sky know it.

    BoE in full RNLI mode.

The BoE’s original plan to sell some of its stock of Gilts was asking for trouble given the state of the economy that BoJo left us with .

    ———-

MM – genuine ask. Opine if you will on the original plan to sell.

I don’t understand the tactics at work here by BoE.

Also, I can only assume they’ve been totally blindsided by the speed with which the new Queen and her jester smashed open the sweetie jar.

  23. BSR @ 4.34

SKY are the known / easy option.

There is a market out there for the SPL but it involves hard work.

SKY just want to show National Bigotry Week four times a season.

Too many of the smaller clubs are cheap dates.

They just want enough money to stay full-time the easiest way they can.

A cheque from SKY is a lot less hassle than trying to fill their stadium.

Crap deal that pushes back any real change till 2029.

Maybe the 5 PPV games might energise our board to do something fifferent.

CTV is currently Hospital Radio with pictures.

Then you have the HD farrago — it really is money for nothing.

Praying for a proper commentary as well — TB is a thinner version of BFDJ.

The QE gilt buy should have been lost in a drawer somewhere and forgotten about.

Let sleeping dogs lie — some form of equivalence to all the froth lost in / after 2008.

Gilts = UK government bonds / debt.

To start selling / putting these gilts back into the market as we try to get the finances back under control after CoViD19 and just as the energy market explodes / implodes with economy crashing price increases was the stuff of rank stupidity.

Energy market — our solution is Govt funded consumer subsidy .

Which means more government borrowing — more gilts being sold to the market.

To add more to this supply is economic treason — you have to ask why and why now?

Not sure if the issue was ever bottomed out — the gilts held by the BoE / bought with made up electronic money would have generated an income to the BoE from the Treasury.

Not sure whatever happened to that money?

Held on account by the BoE?

If this is correct what will ever happen to it?

Energy prices — follow the money.

It will have to go somewhere.

  27. Saw someone earlier on referring to the UEFA Nations thingy as a pretendy international tournament, but I reckon its the best thing they’ve done in quite a while.

With certain exceptions ( namely England) most teams appear to take it seriously, and Scotland fans have embraced it. Better to have genuine competition than meaningless friendlies, less opportunity to fudge the rankings and real rewards for success.

Those with no interest in the national team cannot really complain. If it doesn’t interest you, why moan when you can just ignore.

I would far rather see our chances of World Cup and Euros qualification improve, and our own players clearly love representing their respective nations, so whats the problem?
