Managing McGregor

182

Celtic players will begin arriving back from international duty today and tomorrow ahead of a six week, 13 game, run that will go a long way to determining the success or otherwise of their season.  Highest on my anxiety list is the condition of injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.  Noises from the US national team were that his condition was not concerning.  We should cope without him at home to Motherwell on Saturday, but he is one man you want fit and on the plane that departs for Germany on Tuesday.

My only other concern is with our perennial metronome, Callum McGregor.  Callum is relied upon by domestic and international managers in equal measure.  Memories of how we complained that Gordon Strachan overlooked the player seem foolish now.  How Ange manages the player during the next six weeks is important.  Get the job done early on Saturday then hook the captain.

A small encouragement, I know, but we still have to beat a Ukrainian team at Celtic Park next month, so the fact that some players we will face lost in Glasgow and drew in Poland to a Scotland side is a mental marker.   Well done to Callum, Greg Taylor, Anthony Ralston, Steve Clarke and the rest of the international squad.

`MadMitch and ErnieLynch quick news is tedious`

Really? Madmitch and ernie lynch bracketed together?

ernie is a contender for Most Informed Poster on here whereas Madmitch….well, consideration for blog standards forbids.

We have no image rights apart from our home games.

If we go big on PPV we stand to lose our season ticket sales.

EPL — There was no market for Burnley vs Hull.

There is no market for Brentford vs Bournemouth.

    But they made a market.

    We should do the same.

The SPL is worth a watching — the only issue is variability.

Good one week / bad the next.

A growing / well run SPL is definitely worth a watching.

We need the Sheep / Hertz / Hibs / DU / Killie to get their erses into gear.

All of them not just the odd couple every season.

RC show the football that can be played on a tiny budget.

We need others to work to their standards / intensity / VFM.

Too many clubs just want to have the badge of full time football and some chat in the media now and again.

There is a problem with, it’s the only show in town mentality. Not a good bargaining position either, especially as noted the present deal has a couple of years to run. Of course £30 mill pa is a lot of money in Scottish football, and as pointed out by Turkey Bhoy, and I think Saint Stivs, a higher premium per game than many other leagues in Europe. But at what price? Far more games for Sky, and a blank cheque for others. Or at what opportunity cost? My own humble suggestion was to approach Channel 4, now back in the football game. Turnover of £1.2 bill, publicly owned broadcaster, ask them for £20 mill pa. Play every game on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm, raise more through the gate. Look at alternatives! No, wait a minute, there isn’t any.

FT is only £1 for 4 weeks.

It would be an interesting 3/4 weeks to get it,it gas a great search bar for those great wee questions from a market perspective .

It will save you being horrendously misinformed on gilts and QE

SKY is not the only show in town.

it is — unfortunately — the only show that the SPL is comfortable with.

All of this is shaping up to be the Scottish Cringe does media.

Growth is not for the likes of us — that nice SKY crowd are showing us some shiny trinkets and baubles / all the way to 2029 …

    Where do I sign?

The contract length — almost to the next decade would make JMcL blush at its length and low rates.

I wonder how much a SKY subscription will go up over the same time period?

    Horrible deal.

Of course there is a viable alternative that will generate more interest and more revenue.

    Summer Football.

A domestic Spring to Autumn season would at a stroke present a more lucrative product. It would avoid directly competing against the EPL and other major European leagues.

It would also make us more prepared for European football and enhance the actual match day experience.

It would alleviate fixture congestion due to weather cancellation. It would be safer for travelling and it would save the clubs energy bills, but most importantly it would actually fill a gap for betting and football withdrawal symptoms.

Media companies would actually want and promote the product.

We could create a niche and a standalone platform.

It is definitely worth a try.

His name came up when Paul aka Seamen Staines over at Spunky Spunky was explaining his convoluted political background from the mid + late 80’s — raves / drugs / Contra excuse making / Maggie luv / Tory students — and KP came up.

Rinse and repeat for a number of right wing mentalists tried to get some intellectual ballast from the bold KP and questions needed to be asked.

    Did they understand him?

What was KP selling that they kept buying.

My thoughts were KP was unworldly — didn’t understand society 1920 to 1939 and kept counting angels on pin heads of his choosing to get away from the world he saw developing around him.

Shouted individual freedom enough to get Seamen et al all worked up.

    Match made in hell.

Do we need more shows in town?

Or do we need a better / more mature / more growth focused mentality?

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

English top flight has been won by 24 clubs over 133 years.

But only 3 new winners in last 50 years.

And in the 30 years of the Premier League …

… 28 of 30 titles won by just FIVE clubs.

Only Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City have broken the oligopoly.

Again, summer football is a possible alternative, and worth serious consideration. Might be a problem for Celtic with World Cup and Euros every other year though.

  16. Greenpinata there is a lot of sense in what you put forward, only drawback for me is that you might struggle to attract international players as normally summer would be interrupted by major tournaments every 2 years

  17. Instigate initiatives.

What about a televised Scottish challenge Cup over the summer months. An open if you like, and invite high profile teams.

I remember 58,000 for a friendly between Hearts and Barcelona one summer.

Dominic Mckay was the man brought in with a raft of new ideas.

We really need to stop moaning and present alternatives.

Supposing this non existent Co. bid 50p more than SKY – where does that leave Celtic?

In the SPL with Ross County et all who are watched by the proverbial one man and his dug.

The problem is Hampden and it’s corridors of power, along with a poor product, and all eyes for minuscule profit on Celtic and Sevco.

  19. Guys,

    Thanks for the replies

We take a break in January at the moment.

For European and world tournaments we simply take a break. The seasons are changing and summer can last up to October.

Our televised football could be an appetiser for major tournaments.

  20. Greenpinata

Disagree,I think if we changed to a timetable outside the current.uefa/fifa it would only serve to isolate Scottish football more,an exclusion already compounded by eufa already sourcing most of the teams from big telly populous.

It already excludes champions of most countries,

Look at scandinavia, their was always an opponent theee, excluded to playing qualy rounds with resultant less money into their game.

It would happen here, its occurring in hol and Belgium

Great traditional countries in Europe now as they don’t get far in comp terms to what they used to they like every other country sells into the epl
