Midfield fight, CSA article and Football Memories

1215

I had a look at the story on the official site this morning about a compilation CD with various versions of the Celtic Song being released.  After the initial pleasure of seeing Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Brown on their feet unaided, what struck me most was the apparent body mass of the two players we would normally consider our midfield enforcers, Scott and Beram Kayal.

Against Paddy McCourt, Joe Ledley and Emilio, not to mention men of considerable bulk, like Charlie Mulgrew, they are comparatively svelte and diminutive.  The central midfield role is about mobility and football-intelligence more than anything else.  How you use your weight against an opponent is as important as having the weight to begin with, but when the margins between winning and not winning are so tight, getting the physical balance right is important.

I don’t think I’ve been happy with a Celtic 4-4-2 line-up for years but playing Scott, Beram and a couple of wingers across midfield feels like an invitation for more limited opponents to bully this area, something the Highlanders did very effectively the last time we visited Inverness.

After mentioning tomorrow’s Fans Against Criminalisation meeting in yesterday’s blog I read Joe O’Rourke’s item on the Supporters’ Association site on the same subject with a mixture of horror and foreboding.  The First Minister would be well advised to quickly reign-in whatever loose cannons he has roaming the corridors of power.  Well done to Joe for bringing this to the attention of a wider audience.

The guys from the Alzheimer’s charity, FootballMemories, org.uk asked me to bring their site to your attention.  They work with Alzheimer patients, using the universal platform football provides us all, to engage and invoke recollections.  The site has lots of great Celtic stories, take a look and add your own.

De, de-de de de, de, de-de, de de, de de…

  1. Long Post, skip on by if ye cannae be *****

Being of Irish and Scottish born I always had an affinity with this country know as Scotland. This ideological thinking on my part was born of perceiving this country as on the whole fundamentally routed in Celtic (Keltic) foundations.

Through this I’ve seen many an uprising (both quiet: through the political channels, and aggressive: through the means of warfare).

I always thought (or expected) that all the remains of the (K)Celtic tribes would band together in common cause, such as shared heritage, language, ways of thinking, etc.

What I find are a people divided, either by ego or a feeling that there is no way other than the action they have chosen in their mind. Add to this mix the very “people” who “protested” against what they seen as an oppressive, totalitarian dictation on how they should live act and behave.

Somewhere along the line we all lost our common threads, by which I mean we lost what matters most: the ability to empathize with each other, in our daily lives, how we need to struggle, and how we make the best of it regardless.

In short, we all have the same loves and fears and hates and tears but what we find solace in is the fact that deep down we are all trying to get through it together. What has been lost in the translation is the ‘idea’ that this sort of thinking is only specific to one group i.e. Catholic, Muslim, Protestant, Jew, Buddhist……! We are all cut from the same clothe and all share the same feelings be they good or bad but whenever we try to relate to someone we have been taught is our unadulterated enemy then the empathy becomes that much harder.

To summarise this ranting and soapbox style preaching, all I want is a bit of patience and listening skills on all sides. Then maybe, just maybe we might move forward as a species. If we don’t then we’re doomed to extinction (except for the rich who will be hiding underground).

    I have faith, do you?

  2. Fellas,

Please spare a wee thought for the dad of a fellow seldom poster TBFTL. He’s in the RAH Paisley recovering from a heart attack.

  5. Apologies for long post, but it’s no like me, and I think we should find this interesting. It’s the daily and Sunday newspaper circulations (copies bought and sold) for Scotland for October 2010 to October 2011. Two to check out are The Times (how are you Graham?) and the Sunday Herald (wailing and gnashing of teeth there I’d think – jaw-droppingly poor). Compare and contrast CQN Magazine views – we’re not comparing like with like, but what a comparison. We can of course also factor in 2st century habits, the Metro factor, and so much more, but the figures are staggering.

I’ve done bit of reading on this and most of the evidence would actually suggest that the Celts never settled in Scotland.

Bloke109, I think some of those Sunday titles are showing an increase purely as a result of the demise of the NOTW as the overall newspaper reading trend is downwards.

I remember in the early/mid 80s the circulation of the Record was something like 750k. Amazing to see it now at 267k but perhaps a more dramatic fall from grace since those halcyon days is The Sunday Post. Over a million copies would be shifted each Sunday and it’s now down to 222k.

  13. I see we are bringing out a new 3rd strip

For any bhoys thinking of buying it , here are a few facts

    1. Any proceeds from the sale, will not go to strengthening the team

    2. All proceeds will go direct to bank to ensure zero debt continues

    3. Our CEO salary is directly proportional to our zero debt

4.buying the strip will not help the team, but will ensure PL keeps his high salary

Just some facts for bhoys thinking about it

Ps. The board plants on here will be quick to shoot this down

  14. Larsson and McStay on
