Murdoch, Christie, Gordon and Boruc, Show me the way

532

I grew up hearing stories about Bobby Murdoch’s ability to play the game in four dimensions. He could play a pass forward into space, across the field, at the right height, and arriving at the necessary moment, when that area would look completely different than it did when Bobby made his move.

That ball from Ryan Christie for the first goal last night fired a childhood recollection. Ryan took the ball on his chest while looking to his left. He volleyed a pass in the opposite direction into unmanned territory. It ended Alloa’s remarkable resistance.  We still haven’t seen enough to know what level of player we have in Ryan, but there are reasons for encouragement.

James Forrest still had a lot to do but his shot was the first accomplished effort from Celtic after (literally) dozens of poorly composed attempts. The Alloa keeper deserved the plaudits, but he didn’t actually make a wonder save all night. He was repeatedly in the right place to do the right thing, we didn’t stretch him.

We dropped points at Inverness due to a truly inspired goalkeeper performance, and a remarkable attraction for the woodwork, but last night’s misfiring was all down to a lack of composure. Kilmarnock may reap a reaction on Saturday.

It’s hard being a keeper. Craig Gordon was caught off his line when Greig Spence got a millisecond of freedom in the first half. Spence fired off a remarkable shot which forced Craig into a diving block. It was as good as save as was made by either keeper all night, but what possessed Craig to go walkabout later, when Kolo Toure was on-hand to shepherd the striker wide is a mystery.

Decision-making like this has nothing to do with core goalkeeping skills. You can drill handling, reactions and starting positions all week, but if there’s a rush of blood on match day, or worse, panic, you’re going to lose a lot of goals.

We’ve seen this movie before. Artur Boruc was, by his own admission, the best goalkeeper in Europe in 2008. By 2010 we did well to get £1m for him, as he made his way to the Fiorentina bench. At 30, Boruc was all over the place. The superstar status had evaporated and few were sorry to see him move on.

Six years later he still has enormous potential for the haphazard, but he’s playing a lot of FA Premier League football on merit. He got his head straight and the rest followed. I’ve no idea what the issues are with Craig Gordon but if Artur can get himself sorted, Craig can too. He’s overcome greater odds already.

The same source of my Bobby Murdoch stories last night referred to Ryan Christie as Tony Christie.  It’s a generational thing.  Show me the way…..

My Dad loved nothing more than talking about The Lions and usually it tended to be about wee bloomin Jinky but i asked him once who his favourite player was out of them all and Bobby Murdoch was his reply.

My Dad loved and loathed aspects of South American fitba but to him, it was pretty much the ultimate compliment that Boca Juniors wanted to sign him.

Im a wee bit too young to have seen Bobby Murdoch, but he is THE Celtic player i would loved to have seen play…….closely followed by James McGrory.

  2. the Sviatchenko incident,

i wasn’t sitting too near the pubs telly so can someone say whether it was should have been a defo red card?

from the views i seen, it looked a case of him and the ICT player running side by side, and then the ICT player suddenly put his legs/body in front of Eriks, and so initiated the contact and both went down.

so foul to celtic for obstruction should have been the decision?

    does anyone have a link?

  4. Foghorn Leghorn –

After seeing the replay from the camera behind the goal-line, it was clear to me that Draper deliberately threw his right leg out at an angle which resulted in his foot colliding with Erik. In fact it was Draper who brought Erik down. Admittedly, it looked like a foul by Erik in real time, but the face-on view showed otherwise. The referee was directly behind the incident and I suspect he saw what Draper did.

I was surprised to hear Pat Nevin say exactly the same on Sportscene.

I won’t be going to the semi-final because I refuse to go to Hampden. As a National Stadium It is a national disgrace and I wouldn’t be going regardless of who we drew.

    Same goes for the final.

I’ll watch both games in the pub among fellow Celtic supporters.

Now that reason I can agree with.An absolute disgrace of a stadium.

    Cheers,

im glad it wasnt just my green tinted specs that made me view it that way, looked pretty obvious what had happened from the right angle

makes me wonder why people are bringing it into the craig gordon disussion as another decision that went our way when they think it shouldnt have

but im still not taking my green tinted specs off

The same way that it has avoided any comment on the black comedy of a organisation, many of whose supporters enjoy a bit of effigy burning, being outraged at effigy hanging.

  19. Morning

Re the Erik and Craig G incidents I am inclined to think we were lucky to get away with both- had either player walked I doubt many of us would be complaining too much several days after the events. I did also think that earlier in rhe ICT game the ref waved play on after a much clearer foul by Gamboa and am surprised this incident has got less attention. With all three I doubt thought had we been the aggrieved

We would have been going on as much has been the case. These were , like our first goal at Tynecastle when Armstrong was in an offside position and the ref booked Leigh Griffiths for diving incidents where the ref probably got it wrong but which are hardly the kind of calamitous decision they have been made out to be.

I have not seen the incident in which Tom Rogic was booked on Wednesday since I saw it live. It looked to be a penalty to me -admittedly from section 108. Any replays?

  20. FAC Open Meeting – fans of all clubs welcome.

On Monday 3rd October there will be a FAC Open/Public Meeting in St Anne’s Primary School in Crownpoint Road, Glasgow G40 2RA at 7.30pm. Fans of all clubs and non-football fans are welcome as this is an issue which affects us all.The purpose of the meeting is to bring people up to date with the campaign to have the Offensive Behaviour Act repealed and also to highlight some recent and disturbing actions by the Police Service of Scotland against FAC activists.

We have pointed out on many occasions the various ways in which this legislation has poisoned not only the relationship between fans and police but also the judicial system in terms of the collusion between police, prosecutors and politicians. The enormous cost of enforcing this illiberal legislation also uses resources which communities desperately need for their own policing requirements.

We hope to see many of you there on the 3rd!

  21. Bognorbhoy…

Just awake and saw your email about the BB show. Thanks for doing that. It was very nice of you! :)

I do have tickets. He is one of my favourites, and I haven’t seen him in a few years, so I am really looking forward to the show.

Next week at the DMH, it is Charles Bradley … great old soul singer … what a voice!

and somewhere in there, I am going to sneak away for an overdue vacation (maybe up to the cottage, or down south for a bit of scuba diving) …. going to be a good few weeks!

Hope all is well, and thanks again for your kind thoughts, pal!

got St. P blaring now … so much soul, so early in the morning…. I think I need a coffee! :)
