They applauded as we walked past their homes

1062

In the months afterwards I made a trip to the Celtic Superstore to buy the DVD of the match.  I wasn’t ready to watch it but needed to have it nonetheless, for when the time came.  I’ve still not opened the box.

I watched the game from high up in the Porto end.  The Porto fans were great, allowed us to celebrate with all the enthusiasm you could muster for goals in a European final, then wished us well as we made our way through them and out of the stadium.  Had Celtic won while dropping like flies whenever an opponent coughed, it might have been different.

Porto were favourites and would go on to prove how good a team they were by winning the Champions League 12 months later.  Their players would demonstrate their prowess across the world for the next decade.  They had fabulous talent, so much so, that they should have aspired to better than the gamesmanship used during their run to the Uefa Cup and Champions League wins.

On the field it was a tale of great goals and heroic defeat, off the field, it was one of the most spectacular events in sport.

80,000 Celtic fans made the pilgrimage to Seville and treated the world to a carnival.  The city became the scene of one of the largest parties the game had ever known.  For me the pre-match schedule involved a two hour trip north before a panicked dash across the city collecting match tickets.  What a stress!

There was 10 in our party and collecting the tickets took priority.  Once we had them we could afford time to eat, but what?  Several restaurants were sold out, we eventually found a café with frozen chips and a meat-based slab of something or other.  No choices.  No beer, wine or cola either, it was diluting orange juice or water.  An entire city was pretty much emptied of food and drink.

You could forget about motorised transport to get to the game, we had to walk from the city to the stadium on the very outskirts of town.  It was hot and dry.  An enterprising local was selling a retained stash of cola at the side of the road at a hugely inflated price, no one passed him without buying.

This was a journey to a football game, but not one any of us were familiar with.

The long walk home from the game was memorable for the incredible reaction we got from the locals.  They applauded each of us as we walked past their homes in recognition of what took place in their city throughout the day.  Things like this don’t happen but that day was different.  Seville, like Lisbon, will always remember Celtic. Fifa and Uefa made their Fair Play Awards the following year to Celtic fans, a nomination normally reserved for clubs.

I met a German couple in the hotel elevator.  “Are you disappointed?” they asked.  “No.  We were beaten by a good team”.  I had celebrated two Celtic goals in a European final and watched as we pushed a tremendously talented team to the brink.  Disappointment comes a lot worse than this, although time brought regret.

Seville 2003 was not Lisbion 67 but it was a wonderful occasion in our very proud history. Let’s do it again.

For those who prefer their nostalgia with a bit of silverware, 10 men won the league, 24 years ago today. Big Billy was back and the Celts were in control.

In a way we did win. The actual result became insignificant against the spectacle of Celtic spendour in Seville.

  2. Ogilvie seems to be the teflon man, nothing seems to stick on him at all, like many I await the day he gets nailed but some how I just dont see it,I mean we all new what Dallas was and look what happened to him nice wee cushy number at E.U.F.A., I predict the same for Ogilvie as sure as night is dark and day is bright, lets all stop dreaming when you get right down to it who is doing all the finger pointing, who is doing all the shouting about all this corruption and lying? US, (TIMS) no one else will step up and say “Hold it this is wrong” , until then nothing will change, I pray I am wrong but I have been around this wee City for many years and that is the way it works,”move along timmy, we don’t do the truth here”

  3. Wonder how the MSM will react to Kris’s decision to retire from international football.

With the same sympathy and understanding that Elbows, Boydichenko received? Or perhaps accused of walking out on WGS when he is desperately needed?

I know where my money goes.

Kris has said this is a family thing. I fully believe him. Having met his lovely lady, Lisa, and with them setting up a charity for stillborn kids, I am fully behind them both.

I think they are a couple who now have Celtic firmly in their hearts.

Just read the report of the Celtic v Motherwell 1933 cup final. Talk about being damned by faint praise. The writer tells how Motherwell lost the game rather than how we won it. It reminds me of reports of Old Firm games during Jock Stein’s time. The papers only told how Rangers lost and never talked about how brilliant Celtic were.

I did enjoy reading about how the Motherwell forwards were scared of the tackling of Hogg and McGonagle. My dad always talked about how hard these two were, particularly Peter McGonagle. In fact, when you see old photos of him, he has the scariest hair cut you are ever likely to see!

    What to do ?

Hope that we can rid ourselves(all Scottish Fitba fans) of the sea of apathy that seems to protect CO and his like by going – radical ie: All Scottish Fitba fans refusing to put one more thin dime into the game until restructuring has been carried out. By that I mean – emptying the 5th floor of Hamdump of the masonic cabal that Phil Mac has indicated will – do anything to have a The Rangers of some sort in Scottish Football !!!

The fans of almost every Scottish club voted to have the huns put out of the League last season – could all the fans be organized to – rally roon the flag this year ?

The above is what it will take imo. And it would be an almost overnight revolution imo.

I don’t know the answer but – I do know that talking WON’T work !!!

Agree OSB, the Herald was bad for this in that era (1930s) and sometimes didn’t even give a report on Celtic games.

There was a time after Lisbon when reporting was good by most of the hacks but then the engrained Anti-Irish/RC bias took over and we see where we are today.

Removing him from a direct influence on our game via ‘ him and his guys’ was a huge result for Us.

He is well past his sell-by date and as good as out-to-pasture.

  15. The thing is Nan we have the Pen now and it is how we use it that matters here as Kev sais we need to get it sorted and stop moaning, get some thing done if we have to go it alone then so be it we are used to that, the secret society are there to be got at as I said we have the Pen use it with no stories, no lies, no agenda’s, no paranoia, just the truth and a way forward to a level playing field for every club in this country not just ONE club, and then we all move along together, because this ‘let’s move on” thing from the SPL SFA SFL AND SMSM is not working we would all love to MOVE ON, but ONE club is holding every other club back and until they are sorted out we are all stuck and have to carry the can for some one else’s bad house keeping, no no this has to be sorted and this club has to be outed for what it has been doing for many years, playing under different rules than the rest of us.

Do UEFA know what Dallas did or was it covered-up by him being allowed to leave ?

Did Celtic inquire to UEFA as to why this – dubious character was being ushered into such a skooshy posoition ? If not – why not ?

Was Dallas influential in the refereeing of our home game v’s Juve ie : calling in favors ?

Was Dallas not influential in the – Eddie Smith grassing the GB episode ?

At around the 23 min 30 sec mark there is a “Sevco” fan having a rant about the state of things at Ibrokes and he mentions the word Hun two times.

The first he says it’s ‘hun, hunners a rankers fans’ and then a few secs later he says ‘ we’re all hun holding fire’.
