Virtuoso Elyounoussi as Laxalt keeps Motherwell at bay

220

This morning we have the luxury of being concerned at the volume of chances Motherwell passed by before briefly pegging Celtic back in yesterday’s encounter at Fir Park.  Before kick-off, all that mattered were the three points that necessary to keep our title challenge on track.  We got what we wanted.

Virtuoso performances by Mohamed Elyounoussi and, to a lesser extent, Tom Rogic, meant the win was eventually secured in some style.  Motherwell threatened repeatedly from halftime until they eventually scored on 72 minutes, better teams would have done more with the chances, but stout defending, by Diego Laxalt in particular, kept them at bay.

Elyounoussi’s potent ability to time his arrival into the danger perfectly brought his first hat-trick as a Celtic player.  He described the first, a rebound from Albian Ajeti shot off the post, as lucky, but he was the fastest ‘lucky’ player to make the follow-in run.  His second, from Rogic’s cutback, made the most of tight space inside the Motherwell area.  The salmon leap-like header for the third goal was a delight.  On this form, Mohamed will have a big influence on the season.

Shane Duffy and Odsonne Edouard were rested, with the returning Kristoffer Ajer and Ajeti preferred.  Both did well.  Ajer’s early retirement through a recurrence of his groin injury is a concern, I don’t think we will see the best from Celtic until he and Christopher Jullien are paired together at the back.

  1. Forster’s ship has sailed,we are probably paying 2 GKs the thick end of 40k a week, FWIW, I don’t think Barkas is as bad as he’s been painted, any GK,particularly a new one, would struggle the way our defence is playing.

  2. Maybe Pfizer held back today’s announcement be a few days, that clown Trump would have claimed it,and a lot of stupid Yanks would have bought it.

  3. Hand on heart, I have no idea if Barkas is any good. I simply haven’t seen enough of him play. He hasnt mae any great saves, not has he dropped the ball into the net. he looks good on the deck, but thats a smuch a sI can offer,

I do remember FF first time around .He was widely slated for his performances with “plank of wood” being the adjective of choice, He turned that around

    Bain isn’t the answer

    Duffy plays every game.

    The manager rates him.

He disney rate Turbull or Soro or Shved or, och I’m away tae watch Nigella.

  5. As others have indicated, it is very early to predict which way the title will go. On occasion, this 2020 Celtic have looked pretty abject. But they have looked short of quality in the past – in the last months of BR’s tenure and in the weeks before the sevco game last December.

So, allow an old man his dreams: Duffy will prove to be the centre-half he is ; and by Christmas Edouard will once again be terrorising SPL defences . On Duffy, he has lost confidence. He is second guessing and analysing every move he makes rather than playing by instinct. Odsonne has had a hard time recently and is in recovery from a serious illness.

  6. Apropos Lord Kilclooney, better known as John Taylor, of the old UUP which I am not even sure is around any more. Not just prepared to insult the new Vice President elect Kamala Harris, he made a play on the “some of my best friends are…” defence with;

“I have two Indians in my flats here in London”.

    That’ll work every time.

My apologies for misspelling your nom de plume.

I don’t mind you not apologizing for asking if I was a hun because I wrote honestly about what I saw. And I didn’t know it was customary to ask posters if they are a hun the first time they post. There you are.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________-

Its not customary to be asked if you are a hun when first posting on CQN, unfortunately some of the resident yahoos on here think its a great laugh back slapping all round who can be the first to get a rise out of the new bhoy sort of thing, all fairly harmless silly schoolboy stuff, which unfortunately even those of us who think its bad manners to be asked that as an introduction to CQN can’t do much about,

anyway, welcome to CQN ILJAS, hope you enjoy the experience.

    ===================================

disagree RTB.i seen it being asked of plenty years lurking prior to posting years ago, asked by that ‘yahoo’ BT and jovially ribbed by a schoolboyish oldtim 80+ and in much the same spirit that i asked ILJASB blearily at breakfast this morn.

manners -we will have a chat about that or after a Celtic game with a beer sometime.😊.and one for each in your ‘us’ group who object too,as it is the first time i can recall asking the question on cqn had to be aligned to an etiquette😊

Is your objection in the use of the word …?

if so i will try and refrain…… oki did try!😊

  8. The Hibs that turned up against Hearts at hampden will hopefully be the hibs that turn up against us next week. But I doubt it! They were poor i thought. But they’ll be up for a game against us.

I hope Kris Ajer isn’t travelling with Norway. Two weeks recovery and intensive treatment is a must. He is a quality player. I’d still like to see Duffy, Julien and Ajer given a run in a back three, laxalt and frimpong outside them and a focused defensive midfielder in front of them. Maybe that was the plan when Duffy was brought in. Two quicker guys around him. His job to batter the bullies?

    Thinking Celtic thoughts out loud…..

Agree with you about big Shane being brought in to batter the

bullies, especially when we were all shouting about big Christopher

being shoved off the ball to easily , and the consensus was that Ajer

with all his size couldn’t jump.

Like the look of your defensive unit.

But they need a run of games together.

    H.H. Mick

  10. Julien and Duffy occupy the same position. For 3 at the back with an accompanying high line (your 2 mentioned Jeremie and Diego up the other end of the park) you need pace and good distribution.

We signed a round peg for a square hole and sadly the only person Shane Duffy has battered is Chris Julien.

  11. *CQN PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2020-21*

    RESULTS FROM GAME #20 – MOTHERWELL 1 CELTIC 4 (Elyounoussi[3], Ntcham)

I’m sure before the game a lot of us would have taken a scrambled, last minute sclaffed goal 1-0 victory. But we came flying out of the traps and managed to produce one of our better performances of the first 20 games of this season. Loads of positives to influence our choices for men of the match. When the International Break is over, if we can just bring that attitude and commitment onto the park for the remainder of 2020 we might yet be on to something historic. And remember, friends, we have played poorly in SO MANY games. And yet, we still remain just 3 points adrift of the top spot. They haven’t yet pulled clear!

As always, a big thank you to the 73 who voted. The votes cast for each player are as follows (with my own choices asterisked) –

    Bain: 0

    Frimpong: 2

    Bitton: 3

    Ajer: 6

    Laxalt: 21

    Christie*: 6

    Brown*: 41

    McGregor: 3

    Rogic: 60

    Elyounoussi*: 72

    Ajeti: 4

    Edouard: 0

    Elhamed: 0

    Duffy: 0

    Ntcham: 0

So the players receiving points for the Motherwell game are –

    Elyounoussi – 5 points

    Rogic – 4 points

    Brown – 3 points

    Laxalt – 2 points

    Ajer – 1 point

    Christie – 1 point

And the overall table is now –

    1st – Christie – 33 points

    2nd – McGregor – 32 points

    3rd – Frimpong and Laxalt – 30 points

    5th – Elyounoussi – 23 points

    6th – Ajer – 19 points

    7th – Ntcham and Rogic – 16 points

    9th – Duffy – 15 points

    10th – Brown – 14 points

    11th – Bitton and Griffiths – 12 points

    13th – Taylor – 10 points

    14th – Barkas – 9 points

    15th – Ajeti – 8 points

    16th – Edouard – 6 points

    17th – Forrest– 5 points

    18th – Elhamed, Klimala and Welsh – 4 points

    21st – Bain – 3 points

    22nd – Jullien – 2 points

    23rd – Turnbull – 1 point

    24th – Bolingoli, Dembele and Soro – 0 points

We now have a wee 2 week ‘International Break’ with Scotland playing 3 away games on Thursday, Sunday and then Wednesday. Thursday’s game in Serbia is clearly the most important and there are plenty of current and former Celtic players potentially playing a part – so good luck to Greg, Callum, Ryan, Leigh, Craig, David, Andy, Kieran and Stuart. COYBIB!

Celtic return to action with a 3pm kick off on Saturday 21 November when we visit Hibs, hoping to reduce the points gap at the top to 6 with a game in hand.

    Hail Hail!

    A must watch…

brilliant , lots of memories , best free kick I’ve witnessed Naka v Man U.

  15. Worth a watch now or sometime later, Berlin 1945 three part mini series which tries to capture the latter days of that great city, one which had first fallen to Hitler in the early 1930s and which became a target for destruction in particular from the West in the latter days of WWII. Looks at the impact on civil society, something the UN did in Germany after the end of the war, of mass bombing, a young John Kenneth Galbraith was involved in, and its consequences, total focus on war, We see it today or did in Syria, Gaza, Iraq, and Libya, saw it in Clydebank, in London. Not to mention Japan. The targeting of the civil population and civic life. Day of Remembrance? You do not do that by leaving Europe.

Thank you for the fantastic photos and clips you post , I really enjoy them. Like you I enjoy looking at old history and recently watched a you tube called Our Donegal Roots by O’Donnell family from the USA about 4 families from the Rosses it features Kincasslagh chapel and graveyard a few times where both sets of my mothers family are buried.HH

  17. We absolutely should offer Forster and Southampton a lot of money for a loan deal. He’s clearly worth it.

While there is a slim to no chance of it happening we should ask Lyon to loan us Dembele and we will waive our share of the transfer fee.

  18. Fraser Foster could have got another loan deal, but he choose to go back to Southamton end off.If Lennon can sort out the defence then we should be ok ,I’m fine if Duffy isn’t in the starting eleven,he won’t get any better and that’s a fact,go for Gallagher at Motherwell who is a decent Centre Half and he will have a good idea what the 10 is all about.

    From late last night……

4 crazy years indeed. During some of the protests around town (some of which I attended) the arrival of the Proud Boys with their Semi-Automatic weapons was pretty scary.

With you on the trade deal, I believe Biden was over in his wee town while he was VP.

A lot to see over here, this part of the country often gets overlooked but literally 90 mins drive from my front door I have:
