1200 hungry weans, ill-conceived Act

813

Apologies for absence yesterday, the day got away from me.  The blog would have said something like, “really pleased Celtic pushed back so vocally against the illiberal and ill-conceived Offensive Behaviour Act”, but with less brevity.

Shortly before Christmas we launched the campaign to fund the construction of a school kitchen in Malawi through Mary’s Meals to mark the 10th anniversary of Celtic Quick News.  The project would cost £7000 and to get us there we scheduled a St Patrick’s Day dinner dance for next Friday, 14 March.

8 days out I am delighted to inform you the target money has been raised, Mary’s Meals already have £7000 in their bank, the project is officially funded and construction plans are underway.

That the money was raised ahead of the event was a surprise, although after 10 years of watching Celtic fans go about their business in this manner, it shouldn’t have been.

We received a remarkable donation from Patrick Foley’s Irish Bar & Restaurant in Gent, and Barney Vallely’s Irish Pub in Cologne, who between them raised €2600.

You don’t think of Gent and Cologne as being big ‘Celtic towns’.  I’m sure they are not, but there enough Celtic fans in each city to form a proper community.  Their work has been incredible and a real inspiration.  Thank you to Patrick, Charlie and their patrons.  Special thanks to Kolncelt, who orgainsed the entire effort, but has had to cancel his trip to Glasgow next week.

This gave us a problem, of course, The Show is going ahead next week, but the kitchen at the Kholoni Primary School is already paid for, what will be our focus next week.  Here is a remind of what that £7000 is going to achieve:

Mary’s Meals feed 822,142 kids each day across some of the most impoverished areas of the world.  The global average annual cost per child is £10.70, and is only £7 in Malawi, where the Kholoni Primary School is.

Kitchens are brick constructed and fully stocked with stoves, pots, serving utensils, mugs and cutlery.  They also have a wall-mounted blackboard, so the room can be used as a classroom outside of meal times.

The charity started in 2002 when founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow met a mother dying of AIDS, and her child, whose only ambition was to have enough food to eat.

93% of money raised goes directly to the needy and, where possible, the 65,000 volunteers who keep the project running are drawn from parents and relatives of the children being fed.

The impact in Malawi, 17th poorest country by UN measures, is significant.  Mary’s Meals provide a daily meal to 20% of the countries primary school aged children.  The impact is more than just feeding the hungry, two years after a Mary’s Meals project in Malawi starts, school enrolment is up an average of 30%, leading to higher educational achievements, and a better chance in life.

I’m open to ideas on what to focus on next week but my instinct is to get back onto Mary’s Meals and ask where they next need a kitchen.

A couple of pairs of tickets have become available for Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  £50 per ticket, dinner, dancing, two acts, Irish dancers; it is shaping up to be quite an event.  Email Tony if you want to be there, cqnbooks@gmail.com

We have a donations page for CQN Mary’s Meals’ projects, if you would like to help out, you can do so here.

I always remember him being asked is there a perceived bias against Celtic, in the press, his answer was,” without a doubt, for instance, The same week (rangers) signed Colin Hendry, The signing of the decade” We signed Lubomir Moravcik, And the press were saying WHO? As he said who got the best deal!

  7. Desmond this week celebrates 20 years with Celtic after joining forces with Fergus McCann to help rescue the club from going out of business under an intransigent and unpopular board.

Celtic are now arguably in their most stable financial position and Desmond feels the next 20 years can be even brighter.

Desmond told Celtic TV: “If you look at the financial metrics between Celtic and other clubs in the UK, our performance, the balance-sheet performance and the performance on the field, I think, exceeds any other club, recognising that we are shackled by lack of revenues we have from TV and other comparable income that Premier League and Championship clubs get.

“We have got financial stability, good organisational structures as far as scouting, development squad and coaching go. We have a vision of how we want to keep on improving the playing squad.

“If you look at the squads over the past few years, they are getting better and better each year.”

The Irishman also hailed Neil Lennon as a “first-class manager” and Peter Lawwell as a “wonderful chief executive, as good as you will find in any football club in the world”.

And his main pride over his time with Celtic is the culture.

When asked for his highlights, he said: “I have too many to mention. I liked the evening we beat Barcelona and I liked when we did the same with Manchester United.

“I like any moment at Celtic Park when we have had victories, especially over teams that wear blue.

“Seville (the 2003 Uefa Cup final) was a great highlight but there’s many of them there.

“But I think the highlight of the 20 years I have been involved with Celtic is that it’s an independent club with wonderful supporters and we have a great future.

“I see the club getting stronger on the playing field. I see the club being visionary in developing internationally. And I see the Celtic fans and the club having a partnership that will be a model for all other football clubs.”

Survey completed, hope it helps in some way.

Regarding Scotland games, I have been to Wembley once, more for the week end away with mates than the football. I went once to a Scotland game at Hampden, v Argentina, 1979 when they were world champions. Frank McGarvey got abuse, and even worse was the abuse to Kenny Dalglish. A group behind us abused Kenny every time he touched the ball, for one reason and one reason only, he was an ex Celtic player, and this went on for a while until my big mate turned around to them and said, ” the next wan who slags off Dalglish will get this screwtap ower their heed” End of abuse, and end of my Scotland games at Hampden.

Hope to meet you all at CQten.

What a tremendous response to Paul article today teams flooding in.

    Keep the coming, details below.

“CQteN Dream Team” Less than 3 weeks to go!

Now is your chance to select and influence the CQteN dream from the last decade,

    Email us on doccqten@gmail.com

    Rules are very simple:

Select 11 players from the list below, forming either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation

    So you will need:

    1 goalkeeper

    2 full backs

    2 centre backs

    3 or 4 midfielders

    2 or 3 forwards

    and of course….

    1 manager.

Each player on the list below has made at least 10 starting appearances from July 2004 to date during the CQteN decade.

So no Henrik, Lubo,or Mjalby then!

When you are selecting the players, you should ideally base your selection on their performances during the CQteN decade, but then again that is your choice.

Send your selection to us by email to doccqten@gmail.com with your CQN blog name (if you do not have one, then you need to get thinking as well)

Anybody can enter: bloggers, lurkers, friends and family, but you can only enter ONCE.

The closing date for entries is 3pm Sunday 9th March 2014

The CQteN dream team will be announced at the CQteN night on Friday 14th March and will be published online soon after. There will be a couple of prizes for the closest teams selected to the winning team.

Good luck and get selecting for a fantastic competition..
