A real big team would rest players at Ibrox

194

Celtic have two bounce games coming up ahead of the Scottish Cup Final: Ibrox on Sunday then Hearts at Celtic Park on trophy presentation day.  One of the benefits of winning the league early is being able to rest players and prioritise ahead of the Cup Final, we should do this now.

Newco will do their upmost to convince their fans the ever-present gap is closing by doing all in their power to win the game.  I might feel different on Sunday afternoon, but let them do their worst, this game does not matter.

We have to be fit and ready for Hampden.  Whatever ails Kieran Tierney, he should not be risked.  Instead, Emilio Izaguirre should be given the jersey and if Leigh Griffiths is even remotely close to fitness, he should play.  We like to think of ourselves as being a ‘big team’.  If we are, rise above local bragging rights and aim for history.

  1. Big Packy

Mikael Lustig as back up, (and to help coaching defence)

I do not think Izzy should get offered any new deal

  2. NORRIEM @ 8.38

Can only assume we saw good development opportunity in the player, agree Izzy’s jacket is on a shoogly peg,

but reckon when fully fit, he’s decent cover at SPL level, and another year at just that, won’t break the budget.

There is no possibility of any club never mind Celtic, having two of Tierney class, just in case one gets injured.

I think Celtic are avoiding the new manager chasing multiple levels of Full Back right and left when most want

a new RB at £X million, plus Keiran at LB.

    IMHO CSC

The level of rumoured signings and contract extensions proves once again what a disastrous imposter of a CEO Lawwell has been.

    Gary Hooper

    Izzaguirre

    No legs Lustig

    Sonic the Cowardly Hedgehog.

These are the level of signings we are linked with ( though of course students of English grammar will note i should say “with whom we are linked “).

Anyhow a proper CEO would lead to a much better standard of rumours.

    We deserve better rumours.

    Lawwell Out.

If that’s a free kick there should have been a penalty in the first half from Robertson’s shot.

  7. Watching the CL Semi, hats off to Liverpool. They may or may not go on and progress, but what a go they have given this.

Absolute theatre tonight at Anfield. Tradotionally I always prefer when English teams get gubbed. But pretty overjoyed for Liverpool tonight and especially for the very likeable Jurgen Klopp.

I think Rodgers tenure at Celtic is over rated. I said so (on here) when he was in his pomp. To rank him alongside Stein and O’Neill is ridiculous.

*and more than Big Billy is an insult tae 10 Men Won the League and the Centennial Double as well as ending the beast’s treble bid. He had also a runners up double with the sheep, the only comparison clodagh had with him was both won promotion from the old second division, but not as winners.

He also had tae contend with Desmond White who makes PL look like a choir bhoy.

Then there’s the much maligned James Edward, Coronation Cup, St Mungo Cup, 2 SC’s including first double in 40 years as well as the 7-1 game which was his 2nd LC, not forgetting managing the side tae the SC semis in 1965 after which Jock took over, that winning team was his. He also had tae contend with an autocratic chairman, Sir Bob.

  10. Unbelievable, Didn’t think it was possible, when you consider they were missing Salah & Firmino & picked up a couple of injuries the odds were really stacked against them.

The crazy thing is there was no fluke, they hammered them.

  11. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Well played Liverpool.

Good chance they’ll go on and win it.

  12. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

This Barca team really needs to go away and consider a re-think in philosophy and clear out of personnel. They have been thumped in Paris, Rome, Turin and now Liverpool.

They no longer have a real identity. They are neither stronger or faster than Liverpool nor are they more skilful or better on the ball. They just seem to rely on Messi to create a moment of magic.

  13. prestonpans bhoys on

I must confess at the beginning of the tie I wanted Barca to win but the cheating which went on in the first leg turned me over. Not the same Barca of old perhaps the south American influence encourages cheating and play acting.

Would be nice to see VVD and Andy Robertson get a CL winners medal.

Guys like Mikel and Izzy have been great servants to Celtic but retaining their services (if true) is without doubt downsizing. Are players really going to be pushed for a place in the team if they know two guys who are past it are their cover?

  16. Onenightinlisbon

Jeremy Toljan @ £6m or another year of Mikael Lustig ?

Jeremy has pace, but nowhere near as good defensively on current performances

    Imho only

  17. Lennon and Izaguirre…..we are a very ambitious club aren’t we!!

I’m usually very positive on here but have to say it looks like we are taking 3 steps back (and for the first time in years making me lose interest in Celtic).

We have an opportunity this summer to get a progressive young coach to build on the Deila/Rodgers way of playing (not old school British direct 442 sh*te) and clear out a lot of squad players but looks like we will blow it!!

So disheartening when you see what Ajax/ Salzburg have done in recent years by investing in the right playing style with young/ fit/ fast/ skillful players.

Get Mulgrew back and lump long balls into the box for Griffiths to score from knock downs. We are a shoe in for CL qualification!!

  18. weebobbycollins on

Onenightinlisbon…I think it would be good to keep Lustig and Broonie in the dressing-room next season…both have been there since the start and their presence would be positive even if not first picks…they still have a role to play…Remember, Old Heads are………..well…….…………old.

  19. weebobbycollins on

Besides, big Mik has to wait for his legs to come back…

    …where have they gone?

  20. Jaysus, No Manager appointed, no decision on Lustig, apparently Izzy offered another year and beyond that all we have is paper talk.

Already people are pressing the panic button, we have just won 8 in a row a game away from a Treble Treble, we don’t need massive surgery. Buy in 4 quality players & try to off load the wage thieves and we drive on.

Whether that is under Lenny or a new man remains to be seen, if it is Lenny I would have no worries whatsoever.

  21. ONENIGHTINLISBON

Sorry mate, downsizing is just a cliché and a sweeping generalisation, unless you can back it up, in this context, its not even relevant to the full back debate, especially when its still Daily Recordesque speculation. We are talking about full back cover, players like Izzy who is expected to sit on the bench week in week out, if they get past the development contender.

Because we’re mibbees or miibbees no, giving two worthy international servants a year extension hopefully as cover, instead of buying multiple full backs unknown, and untested, is not downsizing, in my seat. We can’t buy anybody until the window opens, so it makes perfect sense to me, anyway that you cover all bases, Mikael and Izzy as cover, is a no brainer.

Celtic cannot be expected to have a daisy chain of multi million pound full backs in case A. Newman and Keiran Tierney get injured, thats not how things work in football, at any level let alone wee diddy leagues like the SPL.

Good show from Celtic, I say planning, but not downsizing, if we were doing that we’d be appointing a youth coach in place of Brendan Rodgers.
