Anti-Celtic story parcelled up by Police spokesman

1077

The Daily Record won credit for scooping the off-field story of the week, multiple investigations into singing by Celtic fans, but others are beginning to ask who gave the newspaper details of a police investigation.

The stories broke in an unusual manner, with SFA referee and policeman, Eddie Smith, named as the person who reported Celtic fans to Uefa and the SPL.  The officer made what looks like an inexplicable decision after some confrontations inside Celtic Park, without mentioning a word of his concerns to the Celtic security people during the game – the normal procedure for such incidents.

Smith, who has Celtic supporting credentials, was named, providing the perfect foil to deflect accusations that this was some sort of Masonic conspiracy, which it was not.  The entire episode is a classic internecine dispute among Celtic supporters, but with the comments made to Uefa, the story was parcelled up for the Record by a Strathclyde Police spokesman.

The Daily Record reported, “A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said: “For Eddie [Smith] to speak to the delegate after the match is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, it is standard practice””. This is completely irrelevant.

Celtic’s retort in the same article got to the heart of the issue – why the police are speaking to Uefa and the media but not speaking to the club: “This is quite unprecedented as no issues were raised to the club during the match and the police didn’t inform us directly about their concerns.”

Control over media communications from Strathclyde Police falls to Director of Communications, Rob Shorthouse, (pictured on the left).  Shorthouse, whose own favourite team have taken a reputational battering from Uefa in recent seasons, despite silence from the police, should be concerned that the force have given newspapers material for three days of screaming headlines instead of addressing the key concern about departure from established procedure.  This has only inflamed a volatile situation between Celtic fans and officers on the ground. Shorthouse, who held a similar position at the SFA until two years ago, will be familiar with the sensitivities of football issues.

Perhaps a Freedom of Information request will reveal who leaked a story that laid out details which reflected so badly on Celtic.  All we want is equal treatment, as a former chairman once commented.

  1. The last two years have been nothing short of astounding.

Players and management have been attacked and had death threats. Supporters have been attacked. The propaganda from the press is getting worse and it’s clear that we need to be smarter than the average bear.

Going forward Celtic and their supporters do not need to be whiter than white they need to be better than that. The support had got rid on the Ra chants and it has only came back to the fore after two major incidents.

    1. The League Cup Final when it was rubber stamped that singing what you wanted led to a great atmosphere.

    2. The attack on Neil Lennon at Swinecastle.

It’s time for us to take stock and get back to what we do best. Get behind the club and sing songs that do not leave any margin for people to attack us. It’s that simple. We all know what is acceptable to the non Celtic supporters in this country and we know what isn’t. We can talk about what we should be able to sing and what we shouldn’t but that doesn’t wash in Scotland. No other people are as educated in the history of Ireland and it’s over their heads.

There is a clear and present danger to anyone singing songs that the majority of people in this country deem unacceptable (‘RA songs) and that is that you risk arrest and charges.

I don’t fancy that myself. What I have noticed over the last couple of days is that work coleagues are not sympathetic to our plight. Scan any open forum and the vitriol and hatred for Celtic and our fans is as strong as ever.

It’s clear that we must support the team. They need it more than ever. Leave anything deemed as risky for the bus or pub and get behind the team on match days.

Rangers are in trouble. They are clutching at straws. The want to deflect all media to other areas. This recent incident stinks to the core.

Let’s not give them an excuse to jail our fans.

  5. Truth/Struth—I have already been on about just one occasion when I was in contact with the SFA (See F*** All). Shorthouse was di.comm. A couple of seasons ago McCullough had banjoed an Aberdeen player right in front of the camera. I wanted the SFA take on it. There was no way I was getting anywhere. Doing a professional job? Loovens and McDonald had had retrospective bans placed on them by the SFA. The man is a bigot, pure and simple. I’d expect you to back him–orc.

Those in and around section 111 at CP are having videos and they’re pictures taken at every single game, were any of these supporters asked? what happens to these pictures and videos? Am I being investigated by the police? Why has my picture been taken and have I broken a law? If so I’m not aware of it.

Can I feel confident that the pictures and video’s which contain images of me are safely destroyed in case they get into the wrong hands? Oh yes, do these images of me fall under the Data Protection Act? i.e. Data includes images does it not?

Just a few thoughts to fire into the mix.

  12. I know it’s been some time

But there’s something on my mind

You see, I haven’t been the same

    Since that cold November day…

    We said we needed space

But all we found was an empty place

And the only thing I learned

Is that I need you desperately…

    So here I am

And can you please tell me… oh

    Chorus:

    Where do broken hearts go

Can they find their way home

    Back to the open arms

Of a love that’s waiting there

    And if somebody loves you

    Won’t they always love you

    I look in your eyes

And I know that you still care, for me

I’ve been around enough to know

That dreams don’t turn to gold

And that there is no easy way

No you just can’t run away…

And what we have is so much more

    Than we ever had before

And no matter how I try

    You’re always on my mind

    chorus

And now that I am here with you

    I’ll never let you go

    I look into your eyes

    And now I know, now I know…

  18. Have just done some skimming and scanning of posts since art night and noticed a suggestion that the Green Brigade get CCTV as evidence against police.

This may have been posted and I have missed it …..

    How to request CCTV footage

You have the right to access images of yourself that may have been recorded by a CCTV camera system. This is because the Data Protection Act of 1998 means that organisations have to make any personal data available to you if you request it.

You will need to make a request in writing to the owner of the CCTV system. The owner’s details are usually written on a sign attached to the camera. You will need to provide enough information so that you can be identified in the footage, for example a specific date and time, and a description of yourself and your clothing.

The organisation must give you a copy of the CCTV footage within 40 days of you asking for it. You may be charged a fee of up to £10.

You can read more about data protection and freedom of information by following the links below.

Do you think Rob talks in his sleep then?

I mean that’s the only possible way the story could have leaked, isn’t it?

  20. I’m a former colleague of Shorthouse (at the Scottish Executive/Government) where he worked on the First Minister’s desk in the Press Office (during Joke McConnell’s time). The non-reporting of the Neil Lennon parcel bombs is a red herring here. The Police had ample justification to ask the media to keep that under their hats. But despite it being a red herring, it still smells of fish of course…

That being said, Shortarse (unsurprisingly his nickname) hasn’t hid being a Rangers fan and I would rather know this than for him to pretend (a la Young or Waddell that he was an fan of a smaller club) but if, as a comms professional, has said anything bigoted or offensive on social media, has clearly forgotten his training. Of course, he can easily claim that it suited the Police for this story to leak and he was merely doing his master’s bidding (no matter how much he might enthusiastic agree with it).

I don’t like the guy all that much – although I’m connected to him on linkedin and used to follow tweets. However, I’m not sure what anyone has him “bang to rights” on. I don’t foresee resignations.

His take on the Ferguson drinking incident with Scotland was quite interesting at the time though… Ferguson was hung out to dry deliberately by the management but McGregor and Brown (equally guilty) were given more sympathetic treatment as they had a Scotland future.

Strathclyde Police comms staff dampen Dallas story

‘I hear Strathclyde Police communications staff yesterday informed my source that they called Scottish media outlets following coverage of the Hugh Dallas email story in yesterday`s edition of The Times, informing them the matter was unlikely to go anywhere, quashing subsequent media interest.’

‘Despite this, I believe media interest is the story is set to increase.’

‘Rob Shorthouse, Strathclyde Police, Director of Corporate Communications, left his role as Head of Communications at the Scottish Football Association last year to take up his current position.’

Normally, there would be no conflict of interest story to see here, but the machinations of the SFA’s ‘well placed men’ over the years has never been normal. Not that I’m implying Mr Shorthouse is. A ‘a well placed man’, that is.

However, there are serious implications and questions that need to be addressed.

    1. Has Rob Shorthouse directly, or indirectly, influenced the alleged ‘dampening’ of the complaint made against Hugh Dallas? And, has he had a material effect on trying to steer the media away from this story?

    2. Is Rob Shorthouse a friend of Hugh Dallas? After all, there has to have been some form of prior relationship between the two when both men held senior positions at the SFA – at the same time.

And Shorthouse, as director of communications, can hardly say he had little dealings with Dallas, the Head of Referees – especially a Head of Referees who just loved to ‘communicate’. And to try and suggest otherwise is patent nonsense.

I hope, for Mr Shorthouse’s sake, that he has not been guilty of trying to turn the Hugh Dallas Email complaint story, into the ‘Hush’ Dallas Email complaint non-story.

In related news, it seems that Strathclyde’s Finest resident desk-jockey is no stranger to being the main cause of controversy. As this quick search highlights:thefreelibrary.com

A POLICE boss has had to apologise for telling retired cops to contact a dead officer for information.

Civilian Rob Shorthouse, the pounds 85,000-a-year head of communications for Strathclyde Police, had written to hundreds of members of the retired Police Officers Association (Scotland).

Yesterday, Shorthouse, who was formerly communications head at the Scottish Football Association, told the Sunday Mail he was very embarassed by his mistake.

He said: ‘I have offered a full apology and regret any offence that may have been caused to the Ferry family.

‘There are no excuses and I take full responsibility. This was a mistake that should not have happened. We will be sending out another letter with the correct details and an apology.’

Yesterday a former police chief also criticised the error…

It’s great to see all that SFA training and expertise being put to good use!

Although it wouldn’t surprise me if ouija boards were still the main means of communication at the SFA..

Of course, a last resort for dealing with things like this can always be found here:
