BEATON IN CHARGE AT HAMPDEN

JOHN BEATON will be in charge of Celtic’s Scottish Cup Final meeting with Inverness Caley Thistle at Hampden a week on Saturday.

Steven McLean will be his VAR assistant and he will be helped in the Glasgow studio by Gary Hilland.

Graeme Stewart and Gordon Crawford will run the lines with David Dickinson on fourth official duties.

This will be Beaton’s second Scottish Cup Final after refereeing the Hoops’ showdown with Hearts at a Covid-deserted Hampden in December 2020 when Neil Lennon’s Hoops side completed the phenomenal quadruple treble.

THE GOAL THAT WON THE QUADRUPLE TREBLE…Kristoffer Ajer thumps the deciding penalty-kick past Craig Gordon in the 2020 Scottish Cup Final.

The Parkhead men let a two-goal lead from Ryan Christie and Odsonne Edouard (pen) slip as the Edinburgh side fought back to make it 2-2 and take the match to extra-time. Leigh Griffiths netted a third, but the defence allowed Robbie Neilson’s men to hit a third goal to take it to a dramatic penalty-kick decider.

Conor Hazard was Celtic’s hero with two saves as Kristoffer Ajer thumped the crucial spot-kick past former team-mate Craig Gordon for a 4-3 win on penalties.

Beaton was also the man with the whistle in two of the Parkhead club’s recent League Cup Final victories – against Aberdeen, 3-0 in 2016, and Hibs, 2-1 in December 2021.
