Celtic exploit Wednesday collapse, a morality tale in two players

725

Celtic’s pillage of Yorkshire’s young talent continued yesterday with the arrival of 20-year-old Dutch player Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday.  Osaze is a central defender and arrives a few days after fellow Wednesday graduate, midfielder Liam Shaw.

Sheffield Wednesday are in turmoil.  Their most recent published accounts, to June 2019, showed a trading loss of £17m on a turnover of £22.8m – horrendous, but an improvement on the previous year’s trading loss of £23.7m.  They sold Hillsborough for £38m during season 2018-19, switched the accounts to a £19m profit, but they are now a club without a stadium-sized asset on the balance sheet.

Since then, a bad situation has gotten considerably worse.  Despite being the biggest team in the Championship by some margin, the finished bottom of the table in May; at least one season of third tier football awaits.

In short, Osaze and Liam may read about Celtic’s supposed turmoil last season and kick into the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch:

“You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t’ mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home Peter Lawwell would thrash us to sleep wi’ his belt.”  I’m pretty sure that’s how I remember it.

Football is a zero sum game and where one giant club disintegrates, others see opportunity.  Young players with talent and options will not stay.

Celtic were able to use the arbitrage permitted to them with not being bound by transfer rules between two FA member clubs.  That money, perhaps in the region of £5m a piece for Shaw and Urhoghide, went on wage offers outbidding clubs from England.  It’s a rerun of the Dembele deal from four years ago.

I have been saying for years the Championship is the most dysfunctional league in the world.  It also causes Scottish Premiership clubs more trouble than any other.  Where Wednesday have gone, others will follow.  It is a morality tale in the making.

Yes, there was an age of imperialism and it shaped the world we live in. Who knew?

You can celebrate it without restraint, you can condemn it without restraint, or you can accept that it happened and try to understand why it happened.

All John said was that his marriage had broke up, and him and his son wanted to start a new life in Glasgow. His son is studying here.

He really looked a picture of health, and was in great form in Chandlers. As Auldheid, BMCUW, BRTH & CCB will attest to.

I am still in shock at the sad news.

*possibly Sweeney’s down at Balloch Bridge, been there for years, the current family’s great grampa was working as a boat boy at a dock in Donegal when one of the managers of the Print and Dye work in the Vale of Leven invited him over tae work for him there and that’s how him and many of the Irish landed in the Vale. Good Tims tae boot.

Milaroccy Bay is five minutes by Balmaha.

Ps… In 1973/4 my mum was offered a choice of a new home in 2 new schemes she chose a semi-detached house in Hamilton the other was a brand new flat in ……….. Bonhill.

*Its known by locals as “up the hill”, it was originally planned for over spill and key workers. I worked up there in Redburn subbing tae Wimpey in 1972/73, across the road was Pappert where our first goal scorer was born.

It was the Astina we took the boat trip on .

The flat we were offered in Bonhill was amazing to me and my we brother…..glass entrance screen to a beautiful clean (no graffiti) close . flat with a terrific view and we were told we could make as much noise as the floors were concrete and the neighbours below wouldn’t hear a thing .

It was a slightly easier trip for my dads work from Hamilton to ‘ John Inshaws’ at Shettlestoun .

Clydebank is a poor, hard town for us all here.

It speaks volumes to me that Macjay1, a confirmed Tory to his bones knowing the sands were running down in his own hourglass, knew he and his son could relax for an afternoon, on the swally, in the company of local Celts and tourists. I trust you didn’t con the tourists into buying every round.

A local session I would have enjoyed joining.

  15. Sportske have tonight reported Hadjuk Split left Mario Vuskovic out of the starting XI against Greek opposition in a friendly on Sunday because the defender is ‘preparing for the transfer to Celtic’.

Sorry for the cut and paste, but I hope that it is true.

Just read below from the DR , aye so tough at negotiating that no one buys him 😂

As Lille discovered last summer Ross Wilson and company can be tough negotiators and won’t settle for a penny less than what their players are worth.

  17. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 4TH JULY 2021 5:12 PM

    Afternoon all.

Good evening. Reading back through Swiss Rambles tweets on cL distributions it looks like there is no overall increase in distributions to teams in the CL and a 10% decrease to the Europa. Not a substantial change given the amounts previously paid from Europa participation.

A quick look at the way the cash is distributed suggests that a single entrant from Scotland with a reasonable/realistic showing in the groups – a win and 2 draws makes less than £20m. That doesn’t include any ticket money, uplift in merchandise sales, possible contracted bonuses from sponsors etc, but also doesn’t include associated costs like manager and player bonuses and the costs of playing 3 home and 3 away games.

Very rough guesses based on 3 wins, a draw and a second place in Europa brings in around £6m in prize money. A difference of 13m approx. lower ticket sales but lower associated costs.

So the big uplift from CL participation – 30m often quoted, but as much as 40m suggested by some is a long way out.

If, as seems likely, we sell over 50k season tickets, missing out on the CL will not cause us serious financial distress. No house of cards, thanks to the support stepping up again. Bad luck Dave.

Going by the debts they outlined in their recent prospectus, their football debts, the money they owe to HMRC that’s been deferred due to covid, and the last few years accounts which have showed horrendous losses the same can’t be said for the currant buns.

  18. Onil

Since I was the host in Chandlers, I bought the first round for my guests. The tourists and BRTH, the only Bankie present.

  20. I have lurked and posted on CQN for a long, long time but not as RD – Moniker change made a while ago as someone now posts with a moniker too close to my original.

The reason I have not posted on this site for so long is due to many of the mean spirited posts I see on my occasional “lurks” – Sid 1888 at 12.20 being a prime example.

In see regular appalling attacks on people I regard as Celtic heroes – including our host – from CQN “regulars’ so in a moment of weakness I responded today and the feedback was exactly what I expected.

Typically AT’s first reaction is – am I a hun?

DD reckons everyone is a Hun.

    I’m not a Hun.

I could easily establish my Celtic credentials and indeed there are people posting today (and many more) who could verify this but I will resist the temptation as I can’t be arsed and I don’t need to justify myself to people who I do not believe are representative of mainstream Celtic supporters anyway.

BTW Sid 1888 wanted also to boycott STs but establishes his credentials today by telling us he is a ST holder.

Some of you guys need to get out more!

    Hasta luego!

  21. Looking forward to the new era. I expect nothing regarding Europe this Season as it is way too short a time period,

A mega jam&spoon for me, was this Tune.

I just watched the Age of Ange on the Tube this afternoon.

I hope it clicks quickly but we need to give the man Time and Dominic needs to back the guy with whatever he wants with regards to the staff he is working with and the best possible players we can get to the Club.

I think this guy, as Kojo would say, is a Brammer!!!

With being scheme neighbour to Tiger, my first query to BRTH would have been, did you get a co-composer credit for The Untied Shoelaces Show theme tune back in the day? (saw a video recently of The Revillos singing to 5 year olds from it).

  24. Although Lenny is having a go at Leigh in public, I reckon Lenny is trying to still get the best out of Leigh for Celtic.

  25. Lenny is a Celtic Legend.

Leigh is a Legend as well, they worked together and if anyone knows how to push Leighs buttons it is Neil. Now if they were texting saying lets say this and that… I’d be worried.

Lenny is firing up Leigh as best he can from the outside.

Leigh Griffiths on it, is an asset.
