Celtic must call for resignation of Regan and Doncaster

1440

Tomorrow’s SPL meeting is something of a formality, albeit as dramatic as a formality can be.  The main scheduled action of the week is underway at Hampden right now.  We hear that after issuing threats to exclude 20 SFL clubs from future access to the top two divisions in Scottish football, SPL and SFA chief executives, Neil Doncaster and Stewart Regan, will face irate SFL chairmen.

In mitigation of the criticism coming his way, Mr Doncaster is offering your money, in perpetuity, to buy votes to allow Sevco to gain direct access to the First Division.  If passed, they would probably enter the SPL next season, close to debt free, while Celtic carry peak debt of around £35m after playing by the rules and not qualifying for Champions League football during the last three seasons.

In short, if Mr Doncaster manages to persuade the SFL chairmen to back his plan, Sevco will become by far the strongest team in the SPL a year from now.

The plan has been rejected as wholly unacceptable by an impressive list of clubs with no association whatsoever with Celtic, many of whom exist hand-to-mouth and whose vote against will cost them considerable income.

Doncaster’s part in creating this shambles cannot be underestimated.  He perpetuated the myth that “Rangers” should and would be in next season’s SPL, allowing people to invest in an undeliverable strategy, including Charles Green.

Mr Doncaster is an employee of the company Celtic are an equal-twelfth shareholder in.  His actions are wholly incompatible with sporting meritocracy.  As Celtic shareholders we call for his resignation and, if this is not forthcoming, demand he faces a confidence vote.

“Without fear or favour” was the promise from Stewart Regan when he told us he would apply the rules evenly as the Rangers saga unfolded.  In advocating rules are torn up and replaced his words are laughable.

His assertion that the actions of Campbell Ogilvie over Rangers EBTs had been investigated and that Ogilvie was found to be without blame was misleading.  It is our assertion that the actions of Mr Ogilvie were not investigated at all and that Mr Regan spoke to protect his ally, who remains in position despite being “heavily conflicted” according to Mr Regan, and the SFA being in desperate need of a strong and active president.

Mr Regan is now wholly compromised and must resign or also face a vote of confidence. Two years ago he joined a dysfunctional organisation. He had a great opportunity to make a name for himself as a successful troubleshooter. Instead he’s made matters worse!

  6. Statement from Partick Thistle

    Wednesday 4th July 2012

Arguably the most important meeting in the 122 year history of the Scottish Football League took place yesterday and was attended by a member of the PTFC Board.

As a Club we felt that it was important that we entered this meeting with an open mind, taking full cognisance of all the facts, the opinion of our fans and free from prejudice and speculation.

Unquestionably there are major financial consequences, for all Clubs in Scotland, should a newco Rangers club not take a place in next season’s SPL and there has been a proposal put in front of the SFL clubs that would allow Rangers direct entry into SFL1, contrary to the current league rules. On its own this proposal is clearly unacceptable, on a number of levels, and is something the Board of PTFC are not prepared to support.

A more fundamental review of the entire Scottish football league(s) setup is clearly required. However, we feel that it is not the responsibility for making a decision, that will have huge ramifications throughout the game in this country, to fall on any individual member, or collection of clubs of the Scottish Football League. This is not a problem of the SFL’s making and as a result it is not a decision which can be taken in isolation of the SPL clubs.

It is the opinion of Partick Thistle that the Scottish Football Association, the game’s governing body in Scotland, should now take ownership of this unprecedented situation.

Our view, shared by the majority of supporters, is that a radical overhaul of our game is required. We are more than happy to be involved in any such process, however feel that the driving force for change has to be our National Association.

Meantime we thank the Thistle supporters for their continued support and their many helpful and insightful observations in recent weeks. No matter what happens over the course of the next few weeks we would ask you to continue to support our Club through these difficult and challenging times.

  18. Who does Neil Doncaster represent? The SPL. As such why is he commenting on any possible move for any new club into the SFL.

    He states:

“The three viable options are effectively: bringing “newco” Rangers back into the SPL with a range of appropriate sanctions; putting Rangers into the second tier of Scottish football or Rangers going into the bottom of the pyramid into Division Three,”

For him as spokesman for the SPL, the only thing he should be concerned with is if they are permitted to purchase the share from Rangers to be admitted (note the language, it is admitted, not re-admitted!!!) to the SPL. Any other option is none of his concern.

As for the third option, well surely the option should be that a new club applies for membership of the SFL along with any other interested parties and that a decision is taken consistent with previous applications to accept ICT, Ross County, Elgin City, Peterhead, Gretna and Annan Athletic into the league. Rules should not be changed to accommodate any new entity.

“The third option, I was keen to stress yesterday, would inflict massive damage on the whole of the game in Scotland; and effectively punish 41 innocent clubs for the misdeeds of one.”

or in other words, any of these options would provide an advantage to one club over 41 innocent clubs. Again however, it is no concern of his what happens to non-SPL clubs and he should be aware of what his jurisdiction is and told politely to butt out of others affairs.

Our Board has played this very smart. Say nothing. The alternative would unify and galvanise them. Their disunity is their greatest weakness and risk. As for the SPL, what a disgusting, craven shower of shysters. Particularly Doncaster, who is a truly shameless crone. The logic of their machinations is that there’s one rule for them and another for everyone else. The cover for decades of preferential treatment has been blown and it’s now out in the open. Rangers are the establishment club and Scottish football is simply a vehicle for upholding Rangers’ superiority. We all just exist to serve them. If the fix for SPL or SFL 1 comes through I think we should boycott all of the responsible clubs. We should also look for an escape, any escape. I’d rather we played in the League of Ireland than continue in this dung heap.

    Not necessarily .

First difficulty would relate to proving that the words of a club spokesperson could reasonably be assumed to be an act of advertising.

Second difficulty would relate to the consumer being able to prove that he /she bought the season ticket purely on the basis that event y was contractually obligated.

  27. Mort – Absolutely right sir – Doncaster should mind his own business and get on with his responsibilities by listening to the already stated intention of 8 clubs in denying a newco entry to the SPL. The SFL can then get on and take whatever decision they see fit.
