Celtic spend afternoon asking same question of resolute Aberdeen

648

This time last year the league was in the bag, as it is today, but we had Champions League football to look forward to in the coming days, and would ultimately go on to win the Scottish Cup.  The Champions League is always going to be a hard place to measure progress for a club seeded in pot 4, last season it was hard enough to Benfica, a pot 2 team who were eliminated by Celtic but still progressed to the Europa League final.

Domestic cup performances for Celtic is a more accessible measuring tool.  After home defeats to Morton (good grief) and now Aberdeen we may well ask, what went wrong?

It was evident from early in the second half that whatever match plan we had was not effective, and despite the introduction of fresh faces, the performance didn’t improve.  Aberdeen defended outside their box very effectively, making it difficult for Celtic to play the kind of passes which Samaras released Stokes with to score early in the game.  Forrest found red shirts blocking his path whenever he got going.  Commons had a day when nothing sparked.  Possession was cheaply conceded throughout as Celtic continued to ask the same question of the Aberdeen defence.

While we are playing in in impoverished Scottish football Aberdeen represent the strongest possible opponents.  They are second in the league and were the last team to score against us on merit.  Yesterday wasn’t a fluke result, it was deserved and marked the progress of Derek McInnes’ team.

So where does this leave us?  Celtic remain imperious in the Premiership, the fact that they’ve not tasted defeat against a weaker team there, or conceded in 11 games, is historically impressive, but against the best of the rest, there are question marks, as there will be for Champions League qualifiers.

  1. Current feeling of malaise surrounding a lot of the support these days (myself included), and I have been trying to put my finger on why?

I can honestly say at the outset that in my own case, and I suspect the majority of supporters, it has nothing to do with glory hunting. Truthfully. Some of you may come back at me on that but I honestly don’t regard winning everything as the main reason people turn up, or don’t, at games. Of course it’s great to win the title, cups and get a good tilt at Euro glory, and with a history steeped in success, that’s not surprising. Just as your Dunfermline diehard turns up every week because he has a sense of affinity with his club regardless of what they win, his expectation for ‘glory’ is conditioned by history, and a good league run and the odd cup semi final or final will be regarded as ‘glory’, in the same way Celtic fans’ expectation through conditioning, is to be successful in Scotland and to a lesser extent have the occasional European success, and we are possibly now conditioned to believe that the last 16 is European success.

If you can accept at least part of the above, then you may accept that in recent years our expectations have been, on the whole, met. Outside of a few cup shocks, we have seen success in the league, and a couple of last 16 CL appearances, and have turned over some of the best Europe has to offer.

Yet, for me, something is still missing. In my opinion, we have definitely lost some of our identity. I believe that there will always be a level of disconnect between the board of a club, and it’s supporters. The ambitions for both are not always the same, especially in these tough financial times, however, even allowing for that, the affinity felt for Celtic seems to have weakened for a lot of the support.

The living wage issue, and the Green brigade affair, will certainly have contributed to that increased disconnect. I’m not arguing the rights and wrongs of those particular cases, as there are more qualified and erudite posters than myself who have offered well reasoned arguments as to why that is probably true, but, is it just that, or something else?

I just wonder if the players currently wearing the Celtic shirt connect as well with the support as the players of yesteryear did?

I was introduced to the hoops mid 60’s. Lisbon lions era. (you could perhaps understand then if I adopted the glory hunter mentality given MY conditioning:-).

As the lions reached the end of their era, King Kenny came along. Danny McGrain. Players who connected with the support, and not just because of their undoubted talents. Neither of the two were Celtic fans, yet, were taken to by the support immediately. There was a felling of “togetherness”.

Into the late 70’s and 80’s.

    Paul McStay, Frank McGarvey.

Late 80’s Tom Boyd , Frank McAvennie

    Latterly, Henk, Lubo.

Some of those players played through barren spells, but despite that I felt there was that affinity that bonds team and support. They felt as though they were just one of us, but had the shirt on.

The last player that gave me that feeling was The Holy Goalie.

Is that the part of the reason for some? Are the current crop of players not connecting as well as the players did even as recently as 2010?

    If you answer that it’s not that, and that it is mainly down to board discontentment, ask yourselves this;

If we had another crop of Maestro’s, Roy Aitken’s, King Kenny’s or a Henk came along, would you still feel as unhappy re board activity?

    Open to opinions from others.

  2. Seems that if you don’t agree with certain posters on this blog….you must be daft.

Well…I,ll be as daft as usual, and say sack that whole board right now.

Can someone please explain why PL is never held responsible for his failings?

Not only has he doffed his cap to the hun media repeatedly, he even does their dirty work for them.

Fred.C. Dobbs got it right overnight….Celtic were getting too strong, it had to be stopped, and it was.

The board, bowing and scraping to the hun media at every turn, and pathetically unable to make a stand against bigotry and corruption, doffed the cap, and went to the back of the bus.

Dwindling crowds, Harrassment of Celtic fans, Brown Brogues on the Celtic board, Demonisation of Neil Lennon and Celtic fans in the Scoddish Media, Honest Mistakes, and blatant cheating and corruption.

And yet…..all our board are concerned with, are profits.

    Sack The Board.

  3. I have already stated my opinion. Those running the club have vert different on

Bedtimes to those who support the club. We are therefore broken. There are supporters who see this and are disgusted and those who think complaining is the antithesis of what being a supporter is all about.

The corruption we have seen seems acceptable to those who run celtic. Auldheid any news on the resolution?

  5. Gave Saturdays result some space before commenting . Before I went I mentioned to my brothers that we couldn’t afford any slackers , that we needed everyone to roll their sleeves up , that we would get a hard game . Mcinnes has them playing , and he had the personnel in midfield to beat us , what makes it more disappointing for me was the fact that a man we gave away bossed the show , the type of player we have missed since his departure . I say this as Barry robson was a favourite of mine while in the hoops . We have a lot of young lads in our side , some talented bhoys , but we have been short of an enforcer in the team for a few years now . A point proved when Lasley and black are branded thugs , all 5 foot 9 of them dear o dear . We also had IMHO passengers in samaras and stokes , and not for the first time I might add , why Neil puts faith in these two I will never know . As I’ve said we needed everyone playing , we didn’t get that , where the Aberdeen team were just that a team , they worked there socks of for that result . I am very much of the opinion that we have better players than the rest in this country , but you can’t go playing big cup ties with passengers in your team , As we did on Saturday , and have done on many occasions recently , I will add Mathews to that although the bhoy hasn’t,t played for a few weeks ,and I don’t think he should have started . Which brings me to Neil , he has done well by us , I am not going to say he is perfect by any means ,he could be improved upon if we really wanted to move on to another level ,but I think our custodians have us where they want us to be sadly . Neil,s mistake for me is that he continues with his favourites ( see above) we brought in balde , pukkie , and now griffiths , these bhoys must get a chance balde has been around the first team for a while now and we’ve hardly seen the bhoy or have given him the chance to see what he can do , same with pukkie and as far as I’m concerned I have no doubts Leigh Griffith will be a big celtic player for us , we are a mile in front , only the league to go for , let these bhoys loose and at least give them a chance , same with young Henderson there is room in the team for these kids , and if reports are true about effe wanting to play down south ,then I say bye bye and thanks ,and we should be looking for his replacement now . With regards to the support , it saddens me to see the stadium half empty , I do not go along the lines of the football being bad without them , there is not one dyed in the wool celtic man who wants other than their demise , the Aberdeen fans were vocal on Saturday , (although a bit scumish in there repertoire ) and there were plenty of them . As far as singing from the home fans , well there wasn’t,t any was there , without doubt the green brigade are a big miss , and I’m going to ire some of you now , I just wish they would stick to singing celtic songs , they are a star turn when they do that , we don’t need add ons in our support for the team , switch on your telly,s and listen at any ground in England and there copying your songs , my brothers and I made the journey to Lincoln a few years back , now being a bit older we sought out a nice we restaurant for a meal and a few pints , while in the restaurant a couple with their two sons approached us , they were taking the boys to the game , I asked if they were looking forward to seeing celtic , their dad butted in and said they were more interested in seeing and hearing the celtic support sing . That’s what the green brigade bring to our club . So whoever has their ear get this sorted out ,god only knows there are plenty out there after us , without us turning on one another , I,ll never forget that story from Lincoln , it made me so very very proud .

    My own views.

I feel that Scottish football as a whole has been let down badly by the governors of the game. We now find ourselves as a big fish in a very small pond. We are being handicapped by geography and last year was over achievement for a Scottish club. We’ll continue to underachieve some seasons and over achieve others. Expectations need to be aligned with this in mind.

I can’t comment on what’s missing in the club as for me the passion for the team in the green and white is still there. I introduced a younger generation to the club on Saturday and despite the defeat it was a brilliant day. One that I’ll add to the celtic scrapbook and keep with me forever. I posted on Saturday night that I feel sorry for people that have lost celtic. The number of people I feel sorry for appears to be growing.

He would not have been chuffed at losing on Saturday but if I’d dared to mention ‘bad Celtic team’ he would remind me I hadn’t seen a ‘bad Celtic team’, which would be his cue to reminisce about the heroics of Jock Weir and the genuinely bad old days.

Excellent post that could spark a day’s worth of debate on the moral malaise across so much of professional sport, especially football.

Some may ask whether a new crop of locally produced young talent would get close enough to the 1st team to get the chance to establish a bond.

And bond with us about or for what exactly? Holy Goalie was perhaps a bond based on mutual loathing of the now deid club. I guess another kind of bond to try to establish would be to make every player aware of Celtic’s bigger mission. So for eg the likes of Izzy and Efe who are spiritual men from poor countries. Work with them to create their own bespoke programmes of support that link our roots with their own.

The positive ones may say look at what we’ve done with Kitalba Celtic and the work of the Celtic Charity.

While others would say that if Scotland’s wealthiest club doesn’t pay the living wage…

Agree with you post. Perhaps it’s because the today’s players are all in transit. When they arrive now we say, how long will they be here. But another factor is the demise of the Huns which I am delighted at. I’ve suffered many tough times at the hands of their mongol hordes. But they did give everything an edge and a challenge that is no longer there and has not helped the current Celtic malaise.

Greendreamz, the question is a fair one. Why did they? Did they really want to kill the only bit of vibrancy that attracted young fans to Celtic Park, and empty the terraces in the process?

Because that is what they have done.

You presuppose that I am not aware that there are freemasons in power at Celtic Park and of course I know there are, but all freemasons are not stupid and from where I stand the actions of the board following the so called shame game can only be seen as stupid.

One of our board members, Brian Wilson was director of a company which for the last decade has denuded much of Fife, stripped it bare to get their greedy hands on our valuable coal and then went bust, leaving a landscape that is more lunar than luscious.

Too many people hiding in the team on Saturday, looking to someone else to take responsibility and make something happen. Chris Commons was out of sorts which I felt set the tone for the whole performance (some exceptions).

We shouldn’t expect to win every match but we are right to believe we have a great opportunity of winning – some days we will win others we won’t.

Excellent posts from Twists and Turns and Kev . The latter, like Ernie, Kojo and others frequently say things I disagree with but more often than not there is something in there that hits the bullseye . ( not bullfrog as this originally read)

T and T – well said about the lack of

connect with the players. The current lot seem quite good at ‘kissing the badge’ but I’m not sure how many of them actually see playing for Celtic as much more than a job or as seems to be the case in many instances as a lucrative stopping off point to the EPL. I may be being harsh but that’s the way it appears.

Going back to Kev’s post re the unholy Summit of 2011. I was but a mere lurked then but in the immediate aftermath of that Cup Tie I thought that the summit was potentially a great idea. Open season had already been declared on our manager in about as dismal way imaginable and with the skids already under Rangers on and off the park I had thought there was some possibility that a sensible discussion might be held and that clearly the bigger problems were at Ibrox. The league cup final of just over a fortnight later disabused me of the notion that there was any merit in the summit and Celtic should have walked there and then.

Since then the Board has in its mealy mouthed utterances on the Song

Debate, the demise of Rangers, the

vandalism of our stadium by visiting supporters and the aftermath of the damage caused at Fir Park conspired in the creation of the myth that our

    support is the Big Problem.

I will of course be back and I’ve no doubt I’ll enjoy the day we win the league , hopefully see some of our young players given a decent slew of games and I’ll renew my ticket. Stupid as though it may seem I am not going to let PL and co spoil my Saturday. I’m too old for rebellion and I’d miss my mates.

But Saturday was a terrible day. The team was outplayed by honest pros. Our manager made mistakes before and during the game. I’ll get over it. But that crappy atmosphere in front of a half empty stadium, the lack of passion in our areas of the stadium and the sullen troop away from it will stick with me. I respect posters such as MacJay a helluva lot but I disagree with him and them. Jeanette Findlay, The Celtic Trust and the Green Brigade are not the problem, the current regime at Celtic Park is.

  21. Somebody mentioned Jock Weir earlier.

I had no idea this guy scored a hat trick on the last day of 1949 season to prevent us being RELEGATED.

As big a hero as lots of other glorybhoys in my book.

    Right…..defo aff oot noo…

Jock Weir (20 October 1923 – 9 January 2003) was a Scottish professional association football player, most notable for scoring a hat-trick for Celtic on the final day of the 1947–48 season that prevented the Glasgow club from being relegated.

Weir signed for Hibernian in 1942, but did not play league football until the 1946–47 season due to the Second World War. During the war, Weir made guest appearances for Cardiff City and Brighton.[1] Upon the resumption of league football in 1946, Weir enjoyed instant success, scoring four goals as Hibs won their first post-war league match 9–1 against Queen of the South.[3] Weir had scored 14 goals in 19 league matches (and four goals in his only Scottish Cup appearance for Hibs) by the end of January 1947, but was allowed to join Blackburn for a fee of £10,000.[3] This was perhaps because Hibs had the services of most of the Famous Five, which allowed the club to sell other talented players, including Weir, Leslie Johnston and Alex Linwood.[3]

Weir was not such a great success with Blackburn,[1] however, and was allowed to return to Scotland in 1948, signing for Celtic for a fee of £7,000.[4] This transfer signalled a change of attitude by Celtic, who “had treated wartime football with contempt”[4] and had passed up the opportunity to field guest players of international standing, including Matt Busby.[4] Weir’s arrival did not immediately arrest Celtic’s decline, and the club entered the final day of the 1947–48 season with an outside chance of being relegated.[4] This possibility was averted, however, as Celtic won their match 3–2 against Dundee at Dens Park, with Weir scoring a hat-trick.[4] Weir then went on to score two goals in the Glasgow Cup final against Third Lanark that year.[4] Normally that trophy would have been held in low esteem, but a crowd of 87,000 attended, realising the potential of the Celtic support.[4] Weir was part of the Celtic team that won the 1951 Scottish Cup,[2] beating Motherwell 1–0 in the final.

Bob Crampsey wrote that Weir was an “unlucky” player, as he missed out on the positive effect that Jock Stein was to have on Celtic.[4] Coincidentally, Weir later had a brief spell with Llanelli A.F.C., the Welsh club that Stein played for.[4] Despite making 100 appearances for Celtic, Weir did not earn international honours due to stiff competition from several players, including Lawrie Reilly.[4]

  22. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

I think it would have taken an unlikely combination of results for Celtic to be relegated but Jock Weir deserves his place in the Sun, if not an ole statue.

    ……………………………………………………………….

I disagree about the summit, it was in response to what? Two men having a verbal spat and three Rangers players getting sent off. WTF had that to do with us. Of course the media made it out to be a massive affair because Rangers got beat. We shouldn’t have attended and stated our reasons why not clearly. Nothing to do with us.

Agree theat after the 2011 CIS final when Corrigan and MacAskill sang their praise of the Hun hoards we should have quit JAG. That much was very clear to anyone who watched that spectacle but they didn’t and the baffling positions our board take almost as if in concert with our enemies has got me stumped.

  27. Setting free the bears @ 20:55,

“Over a 30 game plus season, the best team with the biggest squad and resources tends to win the league they contest. The same is not true of Cup competitions ……………it is easier for a good team to win a league and a lesser team to win a cup when a league is beyond them. Restricting ourselves to the Scottish game, even during a period of dominance and excellence (at least, in one case) you should expect to lose around 50 to 60% of cups contested”

Very true point, the great thing about the League format is the best teams over a Season take the baubles.

A good run of games and focus on a single Cup Competition can bring dividends for an average team.

Wycombe Wanderers got into the FA Cup semis furinstance.

Yet it got me thinking, when Wycombe came up against Liverpool in the semis we all lived in hope, after all it’s just two teams, yet no one realistically thought they’d get by Liverpool – and so it proved.

Celtic are unbeaten in the League but were knocked out early in both Cup competitions, why?

Maybe the League set-up in Scotland makes things easy.

Maybe Teams that get us in the League have written the points off before they even play us – any points they get is a bonus – they set up to lose by as little as possible.

Where as in the Cup games it’s a one off, they set themselves up to get something from the game St Mirren penalties, Aberdeen maybe a win/replay at home. When teams have these objectives we find it much more difficult to beat them.

Wonder what Aberdeen’s objectives will be next time they play us?

    Hail Hail

Not wanting to get “bogged” down in politics but this is a bit of a rant (so please scroll by) heard a lot in the news today about the flooding in England.

Now as per …. in this country instead of getting the Police/Army/Firemen/Volunteers etc to build thirty foot high sand barriers where necessary, we play the blame game.

The Thames Valley is flooding and fingers are pointing, mainly at the Environmental Agency, who just happens to be run by an ex-labour minister.

Well my “English” family are from Marlow-on-Thames – proper Marla’ Folk, so my kids are 10 generations + Marlow.

Thing is in the early eighties the fields round the by-pass started to flood fairly badly (though no where as badly as now), never happened to that extent before, the reason – the Thames Barrier had come into action.

That is the reason the Thames Valley is flooding – to keep London dry.

    Now for my usual gripe…

The fact is after the ’53 floods (affecting several Countries and many parts of this one) it was decided London must be protected.

At a cost of 3/4 Billion pounds (a huge sum in those days) the Thames Barrier was built.

Much of East London around the Thames was derelict in those days and some smart flood defences and natural habitats could have been developed to assuage the flood risk.

But no, the governments obsession with developing London and keeping it as a World Class City meant that money would be spent to protect London.

So while factories, mines, docks, ship building, steel works etc etc etc were been decimated throughout the Country, money poured into East London.

Flood protection like much else around the regions was ignored.

The projects benefitting this area – all hugely funded by the Government.

    Thames Barrier

    London Docklands Development Corporation

    Jubilee Line

    Canary Wharf

    Docklands Light Railway

    Lime House Link

    Millennium Dome

    2012 Olympics

    Cross Rail Link

That’s off the top of my head to start with – so when Politicians talk of the money the UK Government flood into places like Scotland, Wales and the regions – then hold up London as a self-reliant bastion of Free Trade and Enterprise, it might be worth doing the sums.

In the five years or so that I have been on here,I have seen some unlikely mineshafters.

I don’t mean that disparagingly to you or them, just couldn’t think of a better way of putting it!

That uber-fans like yourself, faithful through and through, veterans of the really bad times of the early 90s,see fit to act as you are, should worry those in power more than the likes of me bitching from the sidelines.

And while I congratulate you on your principled stance,I genuinely hope that you will change your mind.

And I hope that comes about because you have been given good reason to do so.

The club can ill-afford the loss of supporters like you. Plus,I’m concerned that this will just leave you more time for campaigning, haha!
