Celtic turn up and lose: referee and a ricochet

465

While Celtic totally controlled the first half at Ibrox yesterday, Newco’s defence held firm and largely limited the visitors to shots from the edge of the area.  Leigh Griffiths’ effort from that distance was touched onto the post but over the 90 minutes there was not a single chance where an attacker from either team should have scored.

Steven Gerrard made changes at halftime that made marginally reduced Celtic’s advantage, but not so much as to permit his side an attempt on target, even after Celtic were reduced to 10 men.

Nir Bitton played well until his red card.  He and the impeccable Kristoffer Ajer brought authority and control to the game as they circulated the ball for Celtic.  A momentary lapse that allowed Alfredo Morelos to collect goal-side of him saw Bitton grapple his opponent to the ground.  Referee Bobby Madden waved his red card in a flash.

Morelos was in a wide position, Ajer, who had already demonstrated his pace by catching and overtaking Newco’s fastest player, Ryan Kent, was covering in a central position.  The Laws of the Game ask referees to make a judgement on whether he thinks the covering defender would be able to make up the ground, Madden decided to show Morelos the advantage.

Madden also showed Morelos the advantage five minutes into the game, when the Columbian stamped on Jeremie Frimpong’s Achilles in an off the ball incident.  Madden awarded Celtic a foul, but used his discretion to keep both cards in his pocket when many expected a red card.  The referee determined the outcome.

Celtic conceded fewer chances yesterday than in any game in months but the goal came from a familiar failing – corner kicks.  A ricochet struck Callum McGregor and flew past Vasilis Barkas, who had little else to do all afternoon.

The game was lost for a few reasons: despite our control of play, Newco’s defence stood firm, we did not get into the box or hit the bye-line often enough.  Bobby Madden had two decisions to make and you could bet your mortgage he was not making them in Celtic’s favour.  Despite the unfortunate nature of the own goal, we again conceded from a corner.

Had we lost and played in the manner we had in our previous three games against Newco the verdict would be straightforward: the better team won and is firm favourite to take the title.  I don’t think that is the case, instead, it has taken us until now to make the correct selection and formation decisions against them.

A must-win game was lost, leaving Celtic 19 points clear with three games in hand.  Newco are a club who find it difficult to get trophies over the line.  They are defensively solid, but I think their league position flatters them.  There is work to do for both teams.

An T – dont doubt that the young mob vist celtic sites – but from my experience CQN is for the middle aged – when playing for other sites at 11’s – the views of CQN where less than complimentary

Playing each other at 11s – whit? A football game/sidey….just a bit lost mate

I would agree the demographic is middle aged here.but the thinking is pretty vibrant at times.

I guess the views of cqn are at times uncomplimentary.to me most sites are the same if your lurking, plenty of if buts and maybeez with little or no chance of them building into action that has a real outcome.,one say that was successful was FAC anti oba campaign and our own res12 aa an unsuccessful example sadly, but we are learning and still to widely spread as a fan base for real success to come quickly.

  3. 2 days since game

looking back indeed it was midfield and attack that should have started the season

hwover they are just getting used to each other and soro did not look match fit later

defense well that is clear failure of scouting/transfers

Dubai maybe they thought that the magical change that happened last year would happen again

the change was only we played with Griff’s up front and we did not learn that

as for actually going to Dubai during pandemic well that’s another matter

all this income lost during the corvid time , although i was horrified to see our CEO is on 67,300 pounds a week according to official documents at AGM

said before and been abused and shot down

our club is only run to ensure our beloved CEO keeps that salary

your Chief share holder and part time fan ( he has admitted as such) only cares that there is zero debt

how we get that is up to our beloved CEO , that has worked out well

absolutely no point in Neil being on that plane to Dubai, he will not take our club forward

until a new CEO is in place nothing will change , except instead of CL qualifiers we will have EL qualifiers to be embarrassed about with no planning as usual

i see Rodger Mitchel is clearly angling for CEO at Celtic if it becomes available

The hard working footballers on from £3k to £30k or more deserve a wee break for all their hard work during the season and a pandemic.

Pope Francis was spot on about people swanning off for a jolly whilst people are losing their lives, jobs and loved ones.

You are absolutely correct. Supporting Celtic is much more than results over one saeson. It cannot be simply switched off at the press of a button.

To many of us it’s a reflection of life since we were old enough to remember. We remember the joyous times, where we were at poingnant occasions and who we were with. We reminisce sharing precious moments with some who are no longer with us.

But equally important is remembering the setbacks.

Perhaps it’s reaction to adversity that defines us.

So while change is inevitable and will happen, I will not close the chapter on one of life’s greatest joys.

    Cheers and HH.

  7. Big Fraser makes his seasonal debut tonight for Southampton as first choice keeper tests positive..

  8. I agree that the Dubai trip should never have been planned this year, but to suggest its a booze up because there’s a dubious photo of two men having a beer, is ridiculous. Scott Brown must have the fastest growing hair, I must say , if that photo was taken yesterday.

As for it being a training camp, do we really expect them to be out there training the day after a game, if they were at home they would not have been at Lennoxtown yesterday.

All the anger being directed towards them is understandable, but try to keep some perspective. We lost another game we should have won, we’ve had a poor season, in my many years of supporting Celtic we’ve had a lot worse seasons., this one hurts so much because of what it promised.

In my 60 years of supporting Celtic, I’ve known spectacular highs and horrible lows but I still proudly proclaim that I am a Celtic supporter.

  9. I’ve been critical of the club since the appointment in the showers.

I feel there is much going wrong at the moment.

However, I can’t get too animated at the, now annual, trip to Dubai.

The optics aren’t great, though we have far bigger problems than factor 30

  10. NL was toast the minute he accused publically players of not wanting to be at Celtic, to try and retract that a day or two later by saying they are great guys was weak.

The Celtic CEO has clearly failed to deal with this and has been unable to get someone else who will work under the conditions of employment at Celtic, that is he the CEO is the boss. This will repeat until this system is changed.

Celtic are stuck with NL as the board won’t sack him.

The real power for change lies with the season ticket holders at renewal time, I hope they won’t be fobbed off with it’s just a bad year, it’s not it’s been cooking for a while.

  19. Bhoy From The Boyne on

Surely that NL/SB Dubai picture is from last years trip….I really hope so.

Either way, it goes to show the old pals act between NL/SB. NL’s persistence on SB has highly likely cost us 10iar.

And when there was still time to save 10iar, the old pals act of DD/PL/NL failed the club all through their own self interest.

Celtic should be striving to be the best it can sportingly be. Self interest is preventing this.
