Celtic vastly better with McGregor in deep-lying role

234

We have reached a point now where it is so obvious, it does not need to be said; Celtic are a vastly better team with Callum McGregor in the deep-lying midfield role.  From there he can see the game before him, which allows him to dictate where to move play, and how quickly.

Opponents are reluctant to get too close, as he has the control and speed to go past them, whereas, team-mates within 40 yards know when the ball is heading towards him, they better be on their toes, as a pass could be heading their way.

The difference between Celtic with McGregor in the deep position, and either McGregor playing elsewhere on the field, or not at all, is stark.  The former means we create a plethora of chances, the latter sees us try to pass teams into submission.

Saturday’s demolition of Hearts saw Callum at his creative best, but it was the previous week’s game at Murrayfield that was more informative.  Celtic were very ordinary before Callum moved off the wing to replace the injured Eboue Kouassi.

With Callum in this form, Ryan Christie is in the form of his life, Scott Sinclair can click through the gears, while Tom Rogic and James Forrest are under less pressure to carry the team.  At a different club, Callum would have been groomed for this role from an early age.

Founding Fathers’ Fast
Tuesday 6 November

Tomorrow is the 131st anniversary of the meeting convened by Br Walfrid, where it was decided to form a football club to feed the poor of the city.  To mark this occasion, the Celtic FC Foundation has invited Glasgow’s homeless to Celtic Park for a hot meal.

To mark the anniversary and recognise the on-going work on behalf of the homeless, the Foundation is holding the Founding Fathers’ Fast, where you are asked to fast for the day and donate £5 here in honour of those founding principles.

For most of us, a day’s fasting will do us no harm, and may even be a good thing.  More information here.

Hello again all you young rebels.

From a monsoon type Melbourne this morning, but as they say

‘ The garden needs it ”

Regarding all the brutal assaults on our players and whether

Messi and Iniesta could handle the SP hell, makes you think what

wee Jinky and players like Charlie Gallacher would be like in the

modern game, unplayable i’d say, except in there own home league

where the hatchet men still prevail.

Great news re Murdoch Auld and Hay it fer made my day.

    See what i done there.

Some years ago, Gordon Smith, having retired from looking after his parents, was looking for employment and asked me to put in a good word for him with a particular broadcast company…I didn’t…I honestly couldn’t think of a good word to say about him…

Apologies to guys who responded to my post at 8.20 , duty called.

With regard to barbaric SPFL tackling , the issue which is most pressing to Celtic fans is the threat of injury to players like KT , facilitated by unacceptable refereeing. The SFA , by continuing to let refs like Beaton officiate at the highest level , are condoning this thuggery.

There is a bigger issue which should concern the SFA as supposed guardians and mentors of the Scottish game and that is the gulf between the standard of football here and in other countries where skill and ability is put before blood and snotters.

If I didn’t know better ,I would think that stopping Celtic at all costs was more important to the SFA than encouraging a bit more beauty in the beautiful game.

  17. GLENDALYSTONSILS.

I think you’ve put it in a nutshell, stop Celtic at all costs.

  19. KNATKNOW,I’m not miserable, Celtic always saying big games full house, maybe against Sevco ,but likes of Aberdeen and Hearts and Hibs, they are not full , plenty of empty seats,it’s when I see the club saying ,get on the waiting list, for next season, then I say good God they can’t fill this season, then I say it’s all spin

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

A friend of mine from Margate was in Glasgow last week . I met up with him and as we always do, talk mostly about football.

He told me he has started watching Sportscene this season , BBC Scotland is available on Sky. He could not beleve the leniency shown by refs with regard to red and yellow cards following bad tackles , tackles that players in England would not go unpunished for.

My pal , in his neutral view and not prompted by me, thought the same way we do about the , ahem , ineptitude of our refs.
