Competing with the crazies

1382

News that Hull City had a £6m bid for Robert Snodgrass accepted took the wind out of my sails this morning.  Snodgrass was one of the outstanding performers for clubs in the bottom half of the English Premier League last season, so it’s easy to understand his ticket price, despite only having a year left on his Norwich City contract.

He is a Celtic fan and has not hidden his desire to play for the club, but Hull City (good grief) are now bidding £6m for players from relegated clubs, after spending £8m on a Spurs squad filler.

This all begs the question, can we afford to compete with Hull City?  Probably, yes, but we can no more afford to splurge £14m on a couple of players than Hull, who a year ago were reporting debts close to £80m.

We’re operating in an environment where indirect competitors for players are spending unsustainable amounts of money, pretty much like Rangers did for 20 years under Sir David Murray.  For a few years after Fergus left, we played the same game as Rangers, running up millions of pounds of losses year after year, before pulling away from the edge, while they kept the pedal to the metal and careered into liquidation.

The decision not to match the Bank of Scotland money flowing into Rangers cost us trophies, and caused a great deal of dispute in the Celtic family, but story ended sweetly.  So, so, sweetly.

The crash may never hit England, but the job for Celtic is to find a way of remaining competitive in the Champions League while matching income to expenditure.

The planner, the first leg of the Zwickau game was played on Ash Wednesday. My older sister and her pal took me to the game. My parents wouldn’t let me go on my own.

There were loads of half eaten pies lying about the Celtic End when some of our fans remembered what day it was.

  7. Not a huge Sammi fan…..bad for my blood pressure. When great….awesome…when poor…frustrating.

BUT the goodwill he was brought to the Celtic Club with wee Jay is incredible. It is a real human drama story. What a man…..a true Celt, in the finest tradition. Some great CL performances.

PL does a terrific job……please find a way of getting Sammi back on the books

It feels good to be part of the Celtic family.

Delaney’s, loads I don’t know. Some of the posters on here who lived through the fifties and early sixties nightmares have suffered a hell of a lot more than us baby boomers, know a lot more than me.

*In September 1963 I was on a Boys Guild bus trip to Ayr (EDB might have been there), it was pouring down when we arrived…what else is new.

We were all happy as the day before although we had lost at hades we actually took the lead through Stevie Chalmers…why were we happy, well in the 2 League Cup games earlier we had lost each 0-3.

Our new “great white hope” Paddy Turner had not panned out while a lad from the “good and the bad” was their new star ripping a new one in our upcoming centre half.

On the bus that day our chaperones just shook their head at us being happy with scoring over there even though we lost.

18 months later the “latter day Christ” arrived and it was all good after that…I think the rain might have gone off in Ayr as well.

St Stivs, I read the article on e tims twitter earlier. Really hunbelievable even for the orange walkers.

The unsavoury Green Brigade a mouthpiece for the SNP, the implication that those of Irish catholic descent will vote yes to get more benefit. Its on a par with Ralston’s load of mince in the Record today.

  11. I recall playing ujpest dozsa (sp)in Hungary, lou macari scoring, also an o.g when we won 2-1 away, mind gettin note home at 3 instead of 4 cos of teachers meeting. Kick of was at 4

An Tearman. My dad picked me up early from school to watch the Ujpest Doza game on the telly. It was the last live game I remember watching where the coverage was in black and white.

That was also the time Richard Burton and Liz Taylor became fans for the night. They were in the same hotel as the teams and fans. There were photos of the celebrity couple wearing Celtic hats and scarves.

Ma mammy thought that Jock Wallace was the devil incarnate. She has never allowed a game involving the thems in her house. My dad and I had to go elsewhere to watch the defunct Glasgow televised derby. In her words “I will not have evil anti catholic bigots in my living room.”

  18. How the feck Fraser wasn’t in goal is baffling, a truly amazing achievement by Fraser to get to the World Cup, whilst playing for Celtic.

Chris Sutton would be in my team Every week, I’m not the English Coach however.

Also, according to the Orange order, the snp are pandering to the uneducated Catholics that bleed the benefit system.

If this was said in a way referring to the colour of your skin, it would be slaughtered.

Not that it should be said in any manner…religion, colour and creed.

Just an add on before the yes/ no’s start…I’m undecided as off yet.

The esteemed poster, Estadio Nacional posted a lot about getting Juan Riquelme, I was too into the get everyone as fast and as fit as possible Brigade at that Time.

Having a guy who disney have to move whilst utilising the runners, well, I was very wrong in my thinking then. Get Riquelme or Ronaldhino in noo Ronny D, blow yer whole budget on a guy who doesn’t have to move to Win a game.
