Could Dunfermline vote itself to be relegated?

179

Positions are already being adopted for the anticipated Scottish Premier League vote on whether or not to vote a Rangers Newco FC into the SPL in the event Rangers go out of business in the coming weeks.  Financial self-interest may determine how votes are cast.  First to show on leaving the SPL meeting yesterday was Dunfermline chairman, John Yorkston, who shopped short of saying he objected to Rangers Newco being invited into the league, but did say: “As we speak today, if [Rangers] come out of administration I personally feel it’s a clean slate job. If it’s liquidation, it’s a completely different kettle of fish.”

Dunfermline, of course, are hot favourites to be relegated from the SPL this season but if a club above them failed to pay their taxes and went out of business the Fife club would remain in the SPL.  Even John Yorkston would find voting Rangers Newco into the league instead of his own team would be “an awkward one”.

Put the moral argument aside.  Forget about the consequences of setting an irresponsible precedent, hard cash might be enough to have Dunfermline join Celtic and vote against Rangers Newco. The Dunfermline fans would surely never forgive their board for voting themselves to be relegated?

  1. Hunfermline might not have a vote!

If the huns go into liquidation after the season ends and apply for entry as a newco, the winners of Division 1 will have taken their membership and voting rights!

Interesting point being made on RTC.

SFA wont investigate Rangers alleged cheating during their tenure. However, if Newco attempt to have Rangers’ history, that period will have to be investigated and 9iar will be stripped.

So, Rangers themselves will be responsible for exposing their tainted titles. Gun and foot.

Although I’m sure Jabba will find some way of blaming it on Celtic.

    Haha,getting used to it!

Thinking of turning the house upside down looking for your secret webcam-look out,it’s in the sock drawer!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I think a lot of us are guessing who would or would not support them being reinstated or parachuted into the SPL based on instinct; Aberdeen, Hibs, Cetic = No; a few others definite yeses – Killie, St J. the Mothers; and a number in the ? mark brigade.

However all of these clubs heavily rely on their banks. I would suggest that any bank manager who advocates their reinstatement at the expense of potential relegation for their client would be bagged.

In this case Yorkston has no choice. He HAS to vote against Rangers getting back in.

  6. Hi Paul,

It’s going to be disappointing if we have to rely on the would be relegated club to reject the newco, if RFC have been up to half of what they have been accused of, every Club in Scotland should be insisting on their demise – with root & branch reform.

By the way – have a couple of ex-R@ngers Directors not havesome funds frozen – maybe D&P could try to use this, aul’ Craig might have had grounds after all.

Need to keep them going to the 25th:-)

  7. …someone put an interesting idea to me on a comment under an article..

If Rangers are liquidated couldn’t the “Blue Knights” buy an SPL club (e.g. Dunfermline) move them to Ibrox (after buying/leasing from whoever gets control), rename them Dunfermline RAngers or similar, change the strip etc…

This is essentially the Airdrioinians->Clydebank->Airdrie Utd story except in the SPL. Does anyone know if there is an SPL specific impediment to this strategy?

It can only be a question of time. I doubt anything will have been paid directly, however the influence from the ludge and the legs up (trousers up!) their professional ladders will undoubtedly have been directly influenced by their decisions on a Saturday.

See Jorge Cadete offside goal in the Ne’erday match at Ipox for the first example of a set of officials to investigate.

  9. Paul67

How could any SPL club vote them in now, when it has been established they have practiced decades of financial doping.

    Bhoycott?

  10. How come the Daily Mail presents the facts, and the Scots chipwrappers don’t?

Rangers were minutes away from being penalised by the SPL yesterday, administrators Duff and Phelps agreeing to pay Dunfermline part of the £84,000 owed to them for tickets for last month’s match at East End Park just before the meeting which would have decided on the appropriate punishment for welshing on that debt. The remainder of the money must be paid by April 13.

“We learned, just prior to the meeting starting, that the administrators had agreed with Dunfermline payment for the outstanding money so our action, relating to Rangers, went away,” said Doncaster.

  11. stephenpollock on

Paul 67 – your thoughts please. Should Rangers be stripped of titles for cheating is Celtic not in a position to sue for lost prize money – especially the direct champions league entry and SPL prize money. If Rangers denied Celtic revenue through cheating surely we can sue? Of course they are skint so this is theoretical

  12. Paul67

You know, I hadn’t even thought of that.

Your post is a welcome one, given that there has been precious little air time devoted to gauging the reaction of other SPL member clubs. What we’ve been fed is a diet of poor, benighted Rangers and the dignity they’re showing in adversity, in contrast to ‘gleeful, gloating’ Celtic fans.

It would be nice to hear from a few more fans/representatives of other clubs when considering the implications of Cheats FC’s actions.

    Yours gleefully,

  13. On the day that Scottish football honoured the passing of one of the few truly world-class footballers this small nation has produced: Bobby Murdoch; two notable Scots were not aware of the fact. Dunfermline Athletic Chairman, John Yorkston, and match referee at East End Park that day, Hugh Dallas.

Both said they had not seen written confirmation from the S.F.A. that there was to be a minutes silence.

I could give other examples of Yorkston’s anipathy to all things Celtic, but suffice to say his deeds that day spoke volumes of the person.

  14. sixtaeseven

Did not know that! I don’t know why I’m shocked but I really am, how could any self-respecting journalist ignore that and lead with the “Rangers agree to pay Dunfermline” like they’re some sort of hero (even though there shouldn’t be a question of them being paid or not, let’s not forget that they’ve agreed to pay, not paid!) when they were forced into it to avoid sanctions.

Ridiculous. I hate the media. Fairer press in a dictatorship.

In Scottish football Celtic are outsiders inside a very exclusive Establishment we dont have many supporters if any in amongst those running Scottish football. At the recent Inverness Rangers match we saw how much Rangers mean to other clubs in Scotland all the cuddling and hugging was done in full view of the cameas not inside and privately as you might expect. This in my opinion was to send out the message which was we support Rangers and are part of the Establishments inner circle so Bhoys expect a lot to be covered up and dont expect Celtic to get any help in trying to get to the truth and do the decent thing.H.H.

Lovely spring day ,way down south . Birds chirping , lizards basking –

    Tick tock ——

Duff and Phelps are doing their job . They are trying to stop a business going into Liquidation. .

They will, inevitably , fail. Not least because the client desperately wants/needs to be Liquidated.

Having to wait for Hector is simply prolonging the agony whilst maximizing the earnings of Duff and Phelps.

The Italian football media uses words such as ” bankruptcy ” ” insolvency”

and [ best of all ] ” imminent corporate death ” whilst describing events at Poundland–.

Sit back and enjoy . The Hun is unravelling. Every day sees them one day closer to insolvency and Liquidation . Sold by a chancer to a vulture for a pound. Waiting for Hector . Dual contracts and third party payments. Hundom is eating itself .

    No to Newco !

” I covered this in my ‘What now’ article on Rangers last week. The SPL board have the ultimate authority but there is an expectation they will refer the decision to the entire league.”

I previously used the word dissembling to describe the line that admission of a newco was a matter for the board, because although that IS what the Articles state, the matter can only be put before the board by a vote of the members.

It looks to me that the SPL, or possibly the lawyers who drafted the articles, are trying to cover their embarrassment by this slight change in presentation of the position.

You may recall saying previously that if I wasn’t happy with your understanding of what the SPL were saying I should take the matter up with them directly. I have done so. They haven’t responded. Hmmm.

  18. Good morning from a bright and sunny D-land. At the rate this administration is going D&P will still be there this time next year, I may just give up jelly and ice cream for next lent ;-).

If there are no player redundancies today then I’m afraid D&P will have lost all credibility as well as the plot.

It is a pity about Dunfermline because we did have a good relationship with them until their game against the Huns in 2003. If memory serves me correctly we played them in the last game of the season in 1988 at CP and as we had already won the the league there was a right party atmosphere at the game, between the fans, despite the fact that they were being relegated. I remember a banner, I think it was in the Jungle, proclaiming that it was unfortunate that the Pars were being relegated but they would be back.

Free jelly and ice cream with every P 45.

  19. If any team votes them in

then the only thing is to bhouycot

    their stadium !

    are these votes transparent ?

will we know who voted for in or out ?

  20. At the end of the day, all this talk about voting in a newco is crazy.

We are taliking about letting cheats win.

They have stolen money from everyone they could steal from, they have lied, they have defrauded, they have not apologised to anyone.

All because they don’t want Timmy to win, how sad is that.

    They desesve to die.

  21. If any SPL club allows a thinly disguised bunch of proven cheats to join the top league through the back door they deserve to be liquidated too.

And how can the administrators accept the deferral of wages? This doesn’t actually cut costs, just helps with short term cash flow. There is still a future liability. What do the expect to happen later? Someone suddenly donates then £100M? A couple of Euro Millions jackpots?

  27. Yet another attempt at a ruse to allow Rangers to remain in the SPL. Richard Wilson’s article in the Herald this morning directly comparing Rangers with Leeds is a worthy attempt but it leaves out one very important point

LEEDS DID NOT GO INTO LIQUIDATION.
