Credit to Newco and Gerrard

Credit to Newco and Steven Gerrard.  They controlled much of yesterday’s game at Celtic Park, took their chances, which on this occasion did not all fall to the wasteful Morelos, and deserved their win.  For Celtic, the nature of the defeat asks many questions.

The visitors dominated the opening 30 minutes, which were a carbon copy of the League Cup Final between these sides earlier this month.  Celtic played the ball forward early throughout this period but it never stuck.  The front four: James Forrest, Ryan Christie, Mikey Johnston and Odsonne Edouard were practically spectators.

Kristoffer Ajer disrupted this pattern when he carried the ball through midfield for the first time in the game.  This inhibited Newco, and, for a few minutes, Celtic held possession in the final third.  In quick succession following this, Celtic won a corner, a subsequent penalty when Christopher Jullien was fouled inside the box and Ryan Christie saw his spot kick saved.  Before Newco could count their blessings, they took the lead when Ryan Kent was given space to shoot from 14 yards.  The opening goal came during Celtic’s best period of the match thus far, but it was deserved.

Scott Brown, who despite the result was imperious throughout, and Callum McGregor began to impose themselves after going behind.  A shot from the latter deflected off Odsonne Edouard, wrong-footed Allan McGregor and drew Celtic level.

The second half did not provide any comfort for the 59,000 Celtic fans.  Newco continued to dominate the game before scoring from a free header at a corner kick.  Celtic could not hold the ball for 10 seconds.

Neil Lennon reacted on 68 minutes by hooking both Forrest and Johnston for Ntcham and Bitton, and going three at the back.  Celtic finally matched Newco in midfield and were able to dominate possession.  They created good chances in the closing minutes but it was too little, too late.

Steve Gerrard won the tactical battle, as he did at Hampden, where Celtic took the trophy but not the lessons.

We’ll have a State of the Club piece up tomorrow.

  1. I totally agree with your opinion Scully-Bhoy we have been shouting out for a left sided

centre half for quite some time now

    – There’s a guy called Martin Compper somewhere that looks to fit the bill….:)

  2. AKBW I am not suggesting anyone to replace Lenny. I believe we will win the League but I also accept we may not.

If we don’t I imagine it would be difficult but not impossible for Lenny to retain the job.

My post was not about who might lead Celtic in the future. it was about all of us remembering who we are, where we came from & where we are going.

  6. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

The ‘tussle’ with Morelos and the resultant serious injury to Ryan might explain his consequent performance in the game.

The club has to be very strong over all this mince coming out of Ibrox taking the spotlight away from their standard terrible behaviour. If Ryan is out long term we have to make it known that Morelos was the cause and have the footage of the incident available.

The new lot are far worse than their predecessors for making out they are always the innocent party.

Gordon Strachan’s comments about us needing a target man could be worthwhile listening to providing we get players to cross the ball.

  7. the centre back partnership of jullien and Ayer is a bomb scare scenario and if you add boli boli to the equation we are in meltdown when the opposition attack , take corners , free kicks or any other means of getting the ball into our box.

This I think comes down to the shape of the team. We were at 6s and 7s a lot of this game, losing the ball and unable to deal with their runs.

Think back to Ibrox in Sept or the final thrity mins of the cup final – Ajer and Julien cleaned up because we had a shape and stuck to it.

Get your fckn finger out now big time & stand behind the support who made this club 🍀💚🍀 don’t put a question mark after YNWA

Don’t hold your breath buddy this club are complicit since 2012 and they aren’t the club you thought it was.

  11. The way they celebrated Kent’s goal, full time celebrations and Morelos actions when sent off won’t be missed by anyone at CP.

Crass, classless and inflammatory behaviour from their players and coaches at various times on Sunday ( imagine if we beat them) . Not completely unexpected but it was low even for them.

I expect to see a supercharged, fully motivated Celtic team on their return from Dubai.

  12. Shit happens, I never bought into Paul’s leaders that we would be winning Titles for a generation, we will lose a Title, hopefully not this year but we will lose one and when we do, we’ll just have to suck it up and come back stronger the following year.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I agre with your sentiment Cork Celt, but I would like us to go for a top class left-sided centre back and still try to get the 10 in a row.

  13. My friends in Celtic,

In the cold light of sobriety, I am still absolutely gutted about Sunday.

We could see it coming for a while ( This is not hindsight, many of us were fed of of the ” Can you see them coming nonsense ” )

Right let’s regroup and formulate our plans for going forward. A big strong battering ram of a striker , number 1 priority . A real striker , one who can play and not just make up numbers.

We know we have decent players, we have not turned into a bad team overnight but we need to have a rethink.

Incidentally, when did we last witness Celtic players calling from more support from the stands at this fixture at Paradise. ?

We need real passionate Celtic songs of encouragement of which we have many. Songs that all our players recognise and can join in with . Embrace the all inclusive ethos that a multi cultural new decade brings.

Let the huns live in the past while we progressively move forward to reflect a changed society.

Finally our legal and media people must defend ourselves. We are being played off the park by a sleeket hun machine.

Please look at the Tonev incident and learn.

    HH to all.

  14. Regards recruitment in January. Some attributes I hope we’re scouting for are experience, dig and physicality. In comparison to Sevco these were missing from most of our team on Sunday.

The blend of our team was too lightweight. Broony shouldered nearly all of that responsibility (physically competing for the ball) on his own at times.

We don’t need to spend fortunes. Just get players in who are willing to graft and do some of the dirty stuff. Other than Broony we’re lacking in that department at the moment imo.

As others have mentioned, Elhamed and Elyounoussi were missed, both fairly big imposing players. We need more of these types in for the second half of the season.

I still trust Lenny to sort things out. He’s done it before and he’ll do it again.

  15. So,Scots Squad now investigating the claims of “Racial abuse”towards Morelos.WTF.It would suit them better to investigate something that everyone actually witnessed, the shocking gun and knife gestures, than some made up fable.Who actually made the COMPLAINT?. The crazy thing is,I have never heard about any South American player being racially abused, anywhere, and I mean anywhere. We all know many Celtic fans ,has any one of them ever spoken racially about Morelos? No matter how much they dislike him,it’s not something I have ever heard.

Utter crap from the voice of Traynor.Celtic should be more vociferous and asking for proof now. This is a slur against their fans. They should be making complaints about both players who made the shocking gestures ,but again,we are left at the post.

  16. An dun

my post is not based on sun match but in general.

last sept he got his team selection wrong and cup final was down to poor finishing and our goalie.

  17. Thought this point from an alternative blog worth sharing

We have a large number of problems on the playing side.

In goal,we have a keeper on loan who is unlikely to stay. His deputy is out of contract soon and the back up seems to have lost confidence after a bright start.

At right back,we have a loan player who won’t be signed,an excellent prospect who is likely to be undone by his diminutive stature and a solid but injury-prone Israeli, all of whom are new to the club this season.

At left back,we have one player that the fans don’t trust, another who the manager doesn’t seem to rate and a third who is out of contract soon and not even a left back.

At centre half,we have one rock,a converted midfielder still learning his trade and various misfits through injury or lack of quality. Not a single one of whom is left-sided,btw.

Up front,we have an absolute diamond who may be getting overplayed, another one with manifest personal problems and a project who has played about four games for us.

In midfield, our captain can’t go on forever. We still can’t decide on how best to place CalMac. Ryan and James are blowing hot and cold while Ollie doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going. Big Tam might as well be sunning himself on honeymoon still. Our left sided options are a disaster.

Our fringe players are milking the club dry-see the now infamous AWE NAW list!-but you have to ask why Lenny isn’t making more use of at least a few of them. Shved and Kouassi for starters. But maybe their face just doesn’t fit,a regular thing at Celtic Park in recent years.

All of the above and more is the result of a piecemeal and scattergun approach to recruitment. Recruitment should be about our scouting network being tasked with finding a certain player to fill a specific role. It is then down to the manager to rubber stamp the findings and pass that to the board for action.

Ours seems to be done along the lines of-just seen this fella,I reckon we can get him for a song/on loan. The “how much” part of the equation being much more important than the “what can he bring to the team”,or even “do we need another player in his position?”

It has gone on for far too long now to be anything but a deliberate strategy, and the fact that there has been only one common denominator in the decision making process during this period identifies the driving force behind it.

  18. Happy New Year Paul67 and family and all CQNers and yours.

It has been an awesome decade. Best in our history.

Keep the faith. I trust in Lenny to bring home the quadruple and 9iar.

Hail Hail. Glasgow is green and white. Bring on the roarin twenties. Hail Hail the Celts are here.

  20. I’m surprised that so many are surprised by the way they celebrated on Sunday. The mocking and taunting they have had to put up with since they rose from the dead has been a joy to behold. The banter years will never be forgotten (we won’t allow it)…and during those years their despair and anger has grown to levels previously unknown. The recent ‘in your face orangeism’ is a consequence of this frustrating period. They have the momentum now and only we can challenge them. So, let’s regroup, get refreshed, get new faces in and get ready to go again. None of us want the banter years to end.

Anyway, happy new year to all Tims wherever you are…

  21. What I really would like to see was a more formidable defence.I mean real defenders.Playing two backs who are 70% of the game in the opponents half does not fill me with confidence,as on Sunday.Unless you are playing 3 at the back,as Liverpool do,it’s suicide. If Lenny must play them, then why two Wingers. Why the team looked so unbalanced. One CH having a bad day you are goosed.

    Noble thoughts.

Mussolini was in the past until the divisive and expensive G.B. resurrected him.

On this blog and in the stands the Celtic support is divided politically .

This would not matter if we kept our politics to ourselves.

    But no.

Palestinian flags , IRA songs , Papal flags , the flag of a foreign country , seldom the Scottish flag , at the weekend a Catholic banner , a junior leftist group supported by their mentors in the Celtic Trust.

Supporters who wish to use Celtic to impose their political agenda on Celtic . A political agenda thoroughly routed by the good British people in the recent election .

The huns are united. We are not.

Nor will we be until the first step is taken and the juvenile nonsense of the G.B. is dealt with.

Are they aware that their heroes in the IRA dealt directly with the Nazi SS at the start of the war ?

No. That would require an education.

  23. macjay – is that you trying to unite the celtic support ? are you actually at the wind-up ? or aff yer nut a few hours too early ?
